Status: offline 		Eh I found another article that said a teacher had graded it. Apparently not, I didn't see the links just posted.

That's no fun if it's a legitimate threat of a school takeover involving weapons, but I do agree with the one blogger who was concerned about what an officer stated here.

"Even so, police say the nature of the story makes it a felony. “Anytime you make any threat or possess matter involving a school or function it’s a felony in the state of Kentucky,” said Winchester Police detective Steven Caudill."

That, to me, is a little disturbing, if it is not taken out of context. It's fine to write stories and such, I do not care where they are based. It appears now that he got a little too specific, even listing the date of his own death as a few days in the future.

Damn. And I was hoping for brain eating kindergardeners.

I am guessing that you somehow missed the part that said;
"Police say they've interviewed seven George Rogers Clark High School students who say Poole tried to recruit them into his group.",
in the first link you posted.

That sounds a little bit like something other then a fictional story to me.
I am satisfied to let the police and the courts sort out the facts and not jump to conclusions based on crappy reporting thank you.

How about the concept of "Innocent until proven guilty?" And in this case, there would have to be a lot of proving to do.

      First Amendment implications are where my mind tends to go first.  Even if this kid was plotting to break the Columbine record, arresting someone for words they write is deeply disturbing to me.

Status: offline 		I know this is a little off the focus of this thread... but I was just thinking... (I live in Arkansas, BTW) and I can tell you that many of the parents around here really, really, wish their kids COULD write a story....

Well, if the kid is guilty of planning something, we'll find out about it. If he wasn't, and he just got jailed for writing what must be one hell of a kick-ass zombie story... then he's well on his way to establishing some serious "cred" for his splatterpunk writer's resume.

Imagainary blurb on the back of his first paperback: The author was jailed at age 17, for writing his first zombie fiction....  pure gold to a publisher and/or author's agent! LOL

Status: offline 		Hell, what should happen to the writers of "Killer Clowns from Space" and "When Mars Attacks"?

The story of "When Mars Attacks" clearly describes the murder and oblideration of congress not to mention the death of the presidents of US and France.

I guess this guy should have written about aliens instead of zombies.

Just about every anime movie I watch envolves the distruction of Tokyo. Japan officals do not see this as a threat of from of terrorisim. 

Can people be this stupid? Well, it is Kentucky. Students aren't allowed to write about murder and mahem in HS. You gotta save it for college or Horror Publishers.

As we see all the time, the P.C. (aka thought police)  and Zero Tolerance folks continue to miss the large picture of what really needs to be addressed instead of  Midol(tm) in a girl's purse or wooden rifles in the back seat of a student's car who is on a Drill Team.

But Wait!  That's Not All!   The Pen *is* Mightier than the Sword!  OOOOOOooooooohh  I see now...creative writing is a problem...no can't be; I made it through a lot of the Bailout Plan before I fell asleep.

Once again, Unintended Consequences rears its ugly head again....


Dang, and I'm out of Irish Whiskey.....back to beer...

That comes later, at the trial.
I am all for pulling a psycho who is trying to recruit others into a plot off the street and putting him in jail.
Then at his trial "Prove" him guilty and throw away the key.

Ya'll still don't understand, that NONE of you have read the journal, or talked to the people the police have interviewed. You just assume you are smarter, without even seeing the evidence, then the people who have locked the kid up. That is mighty egotistical of you to think so, but then no one said there was  an abundance common sense around here.

Status: offline 		This is not the first time someone has been arrested for their writings and it probably won't be the last. Whether the story was fictional, written for a class and not turned in, was a road map to a plan or was just the venting of H.S. angst and anger in a fictional manner, we won't know until all is said and done. His Grandparents may have had other reasons and signs that caused them to be concerned enough to find this journal and turn it in after reading. They might have defaulted to getting him counseling, but apparently it was of sufficient concern they felt the police needed to look it over and be prepared, if it wasn't. Again this is something we won't know until it plays out.

Meanwhile I suspect we won't see too many scripts coming out of Kentucky for the horror and thriller genres involving H.S. or any type of school for a while to come.

I wonder - does Kentucky have an outstanding warrant for Stephen King, the author of "Carrie?" Is it legal to sell or own that book in Kentucky?

Police and courts, as a standard operating procedure, jump to conclusions and then look for some facts to support them, excluding and ignoring any and all facts that contradict their jumped to conclusions.
