I don't think the squirting blood is an irrelevant aspect, Kirata.  It seems pretty symbolic to me, of the money being wasted.

So in your use of the analogy, if the chicken would just stop running around frantically wasting blood it would be better off? Silly chicken.

I also disagree about pandering to ignorance.

I don't feel that's a fair characterization of my views. Did it never occur to you that some of the people who don't "get" your analogies might know tons more than you do about a lot of things, and be capable of stumping you with a few?

The way I see it, the people following the chicken around with a camera phone giggling aren't the type that are going to eat it afterwards. That behavior sounds to me more like an adolescent bored and taking it out on a bird.

Just my 2c.

I think anyone who grew up on or near a farm understands this concept. Animals that equal food are killed ON SITE, paying someone to chop it up for you is a waste of money.

If you eat red meat you may want to learn what a Knocker is Most Slaughter Houses Employ one or more.

If you had not seen the actual event you would not clearly understand how Hysterical one has to be in relation to others to justify the term "Running around like a chicken with it's head cut off"

I think I get the extremity of the reference, but I won't argue the point. Instead, I have a city-slicker question (this should provide the farm crowd with some amusement). I've watched a goose's head chopped off (preparatory to dinner). Chop, next step. Why do you let the chicken go? And if you happen know, if the head is off where are the nerve impulses that are driving the activity coming from? Why don't other birds (previously mentioned goose in mind) react that way?

Kirata,

Actually, If you do it right the chicken doesn't do that, If you break the neck first and then chop it flaps it's wings a few times then goes still.

I do not know the answer to your question. Nor have I ever thought to ask.

And I do get the point you were making but not everyone does I have seen people use that term when it really isn't called for.

How does having chickens for eggs mean butchering it. Sure if it stops laying eggs and then is useless maybe.

I quit eating chicken for a couple of months after seeing one killed in this manner for dinner. Very young, on a cousin's farm. She was a terrible cook anyway so I wasn't missing much.

I was thinking about a chicken coop for eggs but the truth is I don't want to butcher it. Same in raising a steer, I need to find someone around who will butcher it. I don't hunt for venison on my land because I don't want to field dress it. I'd rather let others hunt and give me a gift of chops.

we had lots of animals growing up on 13 acres.  we butchered chickens, plucked their feathers and cooked them a few times.  milked goats, gathered eggs, even raised a pig for eventual slaughter, once.  we called on the local high school's butchering class to humanely kill and dress it.  we had cats, ducks and dogs that we didn't eat...so the bottom line that was taught to us was this:

don't take personal responsibility for any animal's life, be it a pet or food item, if you aren't prepared to take personal responsibility for it's humane death.

Hi beth,

I was thinking about that ROP butchering class from my senior year.  That was one place where firearms and a knives were allowed on campus.  It was an very hands on learning experience taken at the same time with the ROP restaurant class.

And I very much agree with your statement about being responsible to handle a quick, humane death for any animal, whether livestock or pet.

And taking that responsibility for your pets is a mofo.....

The chickens (when we had some) not so much so. I only killed the most aggressive young roosters. By the time it was ready for them to die, it was usually accompanied by something like "Die you mean motherfucker, DIE!!!" Once, while chasing it with a sword, I kid you not.

Those big black and white chickens make some really evil and cunningly nasty roosters.

A sword ? Were you trying to kill an ostrich or a chicken?

It was the first thing I could find. I was chasing it, longer weapon, better chance of hitting the target. At least that was the thought at the time.

One too many times of coming around the corner of the barn and having flapping wings driving chicken talons at my face.

Now that's something I would dearly love to see on youtube.

Alas...

Besides, if it was you'd probably end up with PETA protestors on your farm.  But now that I think about it, that too would be interesting - watching you chase PETA protestors around with a sword.

Unfortunately no. I was the only person home.

Sounds like the Lifetime Channel meets Stephan King.

Neither would me, having to get half undressed just to get untangled from an electric fence, while getting zapped, in January (quite cold to be getting undressed)........but without these little "experiences"  would I do for fun?

I would be a very very grumpy person without my little house on the hill, with the big windows overlooking the valley. Deer, coyotes, hawks, eagles, and much more, to entertain me. And there is nothing quite as awesome as a summer thunderstorm, watching the clouds roll in over the fields, lightening flashing, thunder rumbling and shaking the house. Or a heavy snowstorm on a weekend day, and taking a hike down through the hay field to the creek to look for fresh animal tracks with two short people.
