The controversy relating to Obama died down but those opposing Mexican trucks coming into the US and basically driving wherever they felt like it remained a tempest for such groups as the American Trucking Association (ATA). If you ever have the chance to read the weekly magazine published by ATA do so because it is months ahead of main street reporting. The concern was the safety of the trucks; training of the drivers and various other legitimate concerns. The Bush administration which was adamantly pro NAFTA (I never understood why Clinton was for NAFTA since NAFTA was a republican issue) refused to terminate the program and was poised to extend it. Obama seems to have closed it down. I think it wise given the near civil war going on in Mexico not to mention the safety considerations. If your family was wiped out by a defective Mexican truck driven by someone who doesn't really understand English are you going to be in favor of NAFTA; besides who do you sue. The Mexicans are erecting tariffs in retaliation. Serves those US businesses who moved their businesses to Mexico right to be priced out of being competitive (washing machines are one of the items subject to tariffs). I expect Obama to be really criticized by the right on this issue. Go Bama.

Brazil was smart enough to keep up protective tariffs - as I might add the U.S. did against the English when it won independence; helping to develop its homeland industries - and it should not be surprising Brazil has fared better than Mexico and most nations in this global financial turmoil.

Self preservation has been labled a bad thing pretty much across the board. Couched in language designed to condemn with words like "protectionist," "nationalist," "racist," xenophobe," etc. Many of those (myself included in some ways, and on some issues) that have been speaking out against the damaging and destructive effects of various and sundry policies, programs, practices, statutes and regulations (NAFTA, CAFTA, GATT. et. al.) have simply grown weary of taking hits while trying to advocate for ourselves and our countrymen. Certainly the current economic situation is going to bring with it some reevaluations. We'll see how the citizens respond, and how our alleged advocates (elected officials and representatives) act. Personally I'm not particularly encouraged. Uncle Nasty

Your problem is historical because when you grabbed land from the south you inherited a certain number of Mexican’s who just happen to have family both sides of the border. To them they suddenly found themselves US citizens one day but some still think of themselves in their hearts as Mexicans.

Hard to tell where our economies would be without them though, I don't see other people lining up to do the jobs they largely fill. It would be more of a problem if you had a massive welfare state perhaps.

I have seen people lining up for jobs that were filled by illegals at a meat packing plant in Iowa. I was in that line. It had nothing to do with a lack of people wanting the jobs. It had to do with the company not having to pay out decent wages, insurance or act responsibly to the community around it.

Isn't that the true meaning of capitalism though, to pay the least you can and charge the most you can or is capitalism only meant to work for people in the host nation of the company involved? Does the US government have a minimum wage, I hear some jobs are exempt maybe addressing this issue would force employers to use home-grown workers but would these workers work the same hours under the same conditions? The way I see it is it's a war of the worlds: some are getting what they consider a better life for themselves and their family. A life that we would consider a substandard existence. If they consider this a better life then just imagine how bad their existing one is, these people can't be contended with in the hardship stakes because the majority of us have not had to fight as hard as them for the things we have.

I believe that the laws of the land should trump the definition of captalism. As for the work conditions, aren't these illegals at the meatpacking plant working in the same plant I would have been working at? The difference is that they can be payed under the table, recieve no benefits and not contribute taxes from their pay. Their very existence is denied by the company and no records of their actual employment are kept. As for the minimum wage, there are very few jobs that are exempt. The only ones I know of are those where tips are supposed to make up the difference such as casino dealers (my Mom made 14 bucks an hour on a slow week at the casino) and waitresses.

If they are breaking the law then they should be reported that is all I can suggest, border agencies should not turn a blind eye. In the UK they used to do this but images of dead immigrants in freezer trucks and drowning Chinese cockle pickers not understanding the risk of the UK costal tide motivated the politicians to act because at the end of the day they were just being exploited and no one should turn a blind eye to that in this day and age.

Humm, I rarely disagree with you Utopian, but I enjoy people having divergent opinions. I usually listen to what the far left, far right and those in the middle are saying. We can always agree to disagree on issues, I just don't like it when people "can't take it", and resort to personal attacks on others, because they don't like or share their outlook, thoughts, and divergent opinions.

Well, you know Popeye and I, and a few others agree excessive "free trade" is one if the reasons, we are in the boat we are in now. I am not against "free trade", I just think it has not had enough regulations, and has put many Americans out of work. It is a shame people are so worried about what others think of them, to even speak up on the issues. I have noticed that "group think" is rampant online, oh well! Speak your mind! ......within the rules of our kind hosts here at CM of course! [;)]
