I was in the local Salvation Army thrift shop the other day and I overheard the worker talking to another customer. Due to the lead paint incidents, drugged toy incidents and other incidents with toys from China, they are no longer allowed to accept "Made in China" toys. Whether this is a local or organizational policy, I cannot tell you. Since those of us who want to bring jobs to America again are almost immediately called bigots, xenophobes and race haters, does that mean that the Salvation Army is now a racist organization? Should we place them on the list with the KKK? Some of you will say that my question is stupid but then you will be the first to call someone a bigot for not wanting to buy foreign junk or for not wanting to support "free trade" agreements that hurt the US. If you truly believe that we are bigots for wanting our own economy strong, then you might want to grab your signs and go protest outside the Salvation Army.

You know what they say: racism can be economically convenient at times. The simple facts of the matter are products from anywhere can be dangerous people should look for internationally recognised symbols that indicate they have been checked for safety. Some of these toys may date from times when such stringent testing wasn't in place.

They're reacting to the new lead law. "The problem for retailers is that even though they're not required to test merchandise, they face fines of $100,000 or prison time if they sell any children's goods that exceed the new lead limit. That's not an issue for stores that sell new goods and can simply stock their shelves with certified merchandise, but Metro Detroit thrift and consignment stores say they have no way of knowing if the donated or consigned items they sell meet the new lead limits. The Salvation Army is held responsible for the lead level in the toys they resell. It has nothing to do with racism- and everything to do with it not being worth the money to have every pos happy meal toy tested for lead. >.> I'm confused as to how you even came to that point.

If it is all to do with lead then why the "they are no longer allowed to accept "Made in China" toys" statement? I could understand if they were discriminating on unsafe toys but the statement indicates they are focussing on toys from China because they have this perception of them being more unsafe than others.

It's not worth the risk for them. They don't have the personel/training needed to go through all of the stuff. If you didn't know- many of the people who are employed at the family stores are going through the SA's adult rehabilitation program- it's temporary work for most to help them get back to functioning normally. There are international safety standards believe it or not you don't have to do much travelling to find them and what they look like.

All other issues aside, the SA is little more than a brainwashing cult with really good PR. Our neighbors recently "escaped" from their clutches. They have to start their lives over with absolutley nothing. Yeah, a bit off topic but whenever I see the SA mentioned it tends to raise my hackles. And I don't even know what hackles are! :D ~Dave

it is a federal law that went into effect on Feb. 10th suppose to protect kids

Personally I read that as the SA taking positive steps to protect the safety of youngsters - nothing more. They're taking a stand saying that lead is not acceptable in toys. If everyone, people and organisations, took this approach then the dodgy toy makers would have no other option but to rethink their ways. While it's unfortunate that it means that all toys made in China are boycotted, I feel the "better safe than sorry" approach is warranted but cannot see it being a permanent measure.

there were standards in place when the trade agreements were originally signed from what i remember reading back when this lead thing came up. the chinese violated those standards and have taken to adding a whole lot of nasties into products lately as their milk scandal showed us. they poisoned thousands of babies to make a profit. i wouldn't trust anything from china either. I am sick of everything is racism but when a whote person is attacked shot etc it is not racism.I see ebony black men entertinment etc how come I can have a white men entertainment etc the white achievemnt awards etc it is racism against me
