I wouldnt say that pics are a good way to judge a person,  but it does help having a realistic vision in my head when i email or chat with them.
The part that really kills me is when a guy asks for more pics to see, but doesnt have a single pic of his own.

(I'm not sure if this has been discussed here before or not; but if it has I missed it).

How many of us have seen profiles displaying pictures of someone only to find out the picture is of a friend or more than 5 years old? Do you think pictures are a good way to judge a potential partner? And if so, once you are talking, do you ask to see something date stamped to prove it's worth?

I don't generally spend too much time on the other side because I'm not searching for a relationship.  Same reason I don't have any photos or much of a profile.

But old photos if they no longer look like you, or photos of other people entirely would seem to me to defeat the purpose of providing a photo in the first place.  At least, that's true if the searcher is looking for a real time relationship, right?  Eventually, the jig will be up...

I don't know.  It's totally a personal thing, but the ones that get me a teensy bit creeped out are the torso shots with no head.  Just... ew.  Again, that's just a personal reaction. I'd rather see a stock avatar or no avatar (saying 'avatar' because that's usually how I see the torso-shot thing.)

MissMorrigan -> RE: Judging a book by it's cover (3/25/2009 7:15:48 AM)

When talking with a person I like to be able to place a face with the person I am in conversation with, even if it is an old picture - rarely do people change that drastically over the course of 3 - 5 years. Once a rapport has been established, I try to meet as soon as possible. While it's nice to have the romantic notion that looks mean very little and it's the person's nature, their personality, intellect, wit, etc... that's most important, and it is, looks also play a factor in establishing attraction.

Best Advice I can give you, do not invest emotionally until you have met in person and established a rapport AND seen that they are open, honest with all areas of their life. If their intentions are honourable, they will have no issue with sharing that with you.

Vanessa, I don't consider it deceitful, since I still look pretty much the same in all of the pictures, and haven't had any major weight/etc. changes. I just choose them based on what I'm wearing and the angle (ones that don't show my face, without having to crop it out, preferably). If I lied and claimed they were current, that would be deceitful. Since you apparently look completely different from how you did 3 years ago, you obviously shouldn't show anyone older pictures of you without a disclaimer. [8|]

allthatjaz -> RE: Judging a book by it's cover (3/25/2009 8:11:42 AM)

On sites such as this people can be whoever they want to be. A 60 year old woman can be a 20 year old bimbo, a desperate man can be a hot woman and so on and so on. These are the people we will never meet because the entire thing is fantasy and thats fine so long as they don't lead people up the garden path.
I once had my picture used by a guy who sent it round to all his friends saying 'this is my sub'. I of course found out, confronted him and embarrassed him in front of those friends.

When I first saw Steves profile picture I nearly didn't reply because I thought he looked a bit pervy but when I met him in the flesh I was pleasantly surprised at just how good he looked in the flesh.

do you ask to see something date stamped

I completely ignore the picture, other than those that are clearly taken to hide something, and those taken by professionals (having been one meself, I can normally spot those). I go by what the person says, and then when she eventually talks to me on cam, I decide what she looks like. I can't for the life of me imagine why you would want a date stamped picture (which is very easy to fake, anyway, if someone's faking) when you can Skype with somebody, and see their lips move. They won't come on cam, just to talk, I cut them off. Had somebody the other month who couldn't get her cam working for weeks - this when you can go to Wal-Mart and pick one up for $15. Toast.

And the other dead giveaway, I should add, is if someone doesn't have a profile, like you.

Posting a picture of someone else is just silly if you are planning to actually MEET someone ........and I'm sure even the people who do that, KNOW that.

As for having older pictures, it would depend, as other's have said. I have two, one is 6yrs old, one is a few months old. Like Master Fire, not a lot about me has changed.

I wouldn't consider a picture a good way of judging anything much about anyone other than *That's a pleasing or not so pleasing image*.

Vanityfull -> RE: Judging a book by it's cover (3/25/2009 12:15:22 PM)

pictures depend alot on your intentions, i personally would not want to meet someone on the net for a relationship, meeting in person is the only way to pick up vibes of people, so i generally ignore pictures, crouch shoots kinda turn me away from speaking to people tho.

i personally dont, but i live in a small area and so alot of gay male freinds i know have and do use sites like this or other trashy 3 letter word ones... to meet local boys for quick sex, i think its really dangerous and reccomend against it, however if thats what someone wants to do go for it. i could see a recent picture to be very important there, i mean if you order steak you dont want liver.

kaleidoscopeeyes -> RE: Judging a book by it's cover (3/25/2009 12:39:00 PM)

I wouldn't continue to chat with a person who used someone else's picture as their own for reasons many have already stated.
I talked to someone who admitted their photo was 6 years old and now they're wrinklier and greying... that was annoying, but not a total deal-breaker.

A picture is a good way to judge whether you have any kind of attraction to the person. Of course, it's still only an image on a screen... the other senses don't come into play, and you may find you're attracted to someone in real-time that you wouldn't be based on a computer image. But it helps to know that you're not repulsed by the person. If I'm neutral (which is most of the time) or attracted to someone based on their photo, then it's a signal to keep moving forward.

domiguy -> RE: Judging a book by it's cover (3/25/2009 12:44:19 PM)

A pic is more than just "the book by it's cover" analogy.

I can't tell by a book's cover if it is fat, smokes or has 80's hair or dresses like a tard.

My pic speaks volumes.

Lockit -> RE: Judging a book by it's cover (3/25/2009 1:34:44 PM)

I have current pictures and two that are two years old on my profile... but I also have a disclaimer in my journal! hehe

I hid mine because of an on going argument I was having... But you're right; I need to bring it back

MrBrittingham -> RE: Judging a book by it's cover (3/25/2009 5:30:29 PM)

Books are books... covers are covers... one is designed to catch your attention... then, by actually reading the book, do you give your interest of not... if it is your life you are talking about, then better to read who, what and why something really is, and not get caught up in what any fool can disguise as representing themselves. I get so many blue-eyed, beautiful girls from Nigeria and Ghana wanting to be my slave for life, and have a quick story about the dog who ate their web cam, or the uncle who wont allow it, and are ready to drop everything today, in order to fly right here and start serving me, right after sucking my dick in the airport, if I would only trust them and send the airfare.... I have believed it and tried 17 times already... now I am beginning to get a little suspicious and maybe next year I will start NOT judging a book by its cover. M

ThomasMore -> RE: Judging a book by it's cover (3/25/2009 5:40:44 PM)

A picture's worth a thousand grand.
