I'm not sure I'm an expert, but I've had my troubles with them. So what's your problem?

somehow, overnight,my laptop lost the ability to connect to the wireless router,,,im running Vista 64 bit, and when I run the diagnostics the internap wireless card sees the network but the password seems to have somehow gotten changed,,,the other 2 computers, both running XP, are still connected,,,the tech guy from my cable company set the network up and configured everything, including the name of the network and the password, and i neglected to write it down,,,,is there anyway to retrieve the password?

Probably not. Passwords generally go through what's called trap door algorithms meaning it is a one way process. It's why most places can reset your password, but can't provide you your actual password. Those who can provide the actual password are sort of a security issue in my mind as that string is stored somewhere.

In any case, routers come with a reset switch, generally a hole on the side or back that you need a paper clip, straight pin or something similar to reset. That however, will take you back to factory settings.

If you can't remember your password, try blanks and admin. Those are standard factory type passwords. If those don't work, I'd call tech support and get them to walk you through it. It's easy enough to reset and once reset, blanks or admin should be the default password. If you needed a lot of setup though, you'll still end up calling support most likely.

Before you get that desperate though, try turning off the modem, and the router. Let both sit for 2-3 minutes, then restart the modem. Let it synch. Restart the router and try to reconnect.

um. you said password. is it a password you need or a WEP key? if all you need is the wep key just go to one of the computers that are connected and write it down. take it to the other pooter and drop it in

Your cable company should be able to tell you what password the installation tech used when he configured your network...my network password is on my copy of the installation work-order.

so, youre telling me there is no way, as an admin., i can force XP to show me the network key , which i presume is the password my Vista machine is asking me to type in to allow the Vista machine to connect? the Vista sees the network, but is telling me the network security key is wrong. the XP machine shows the security key as a series of dots, but if i could somehow force it to show the actual characters i'd be able to type the same secutity key into the Vista machine and presumably get back onto the network

well.. there are a few ways to get xp to show you the key. none of them really simple. there is a wireless zero config progi called WZCOOK that can recover WEP keys.
Honestly it may be easier to log into the router , probably at 192.168.1.1.. depending on the router and config of course.. and just change the bloody thing on the router then change the key on the 3 machines..

in my Vista network and sharing center window of my control panel, im getting solid green bars showing signal strength, so presumably it sees the network, so i assume the router won't allow it to connect because the security key is wrong and the router sees my Vista machine as an intruder trying to access the network without permission? how close am i to understanding what's going on?

well. you sound right. if wireless or the antenna were off, you would probably not see the network at all. but you do. so i would presume that everything is on. did you simply reboot the machine yet?

Sometimes its nothing but the server and not your pc. When this happens to me, I use another wireless server and try later. Although unplugging and resetting the router works sometimes.

no,,i did not reboot....my dumbass went in and , from memory, retyped the security key, so would a reboot at this point actually make a difference?   if i seem paniced, i am,,ive been hacked before and had my identity stolen which cost me money and alot of aggravation.and yes, i did have a firewall installed and running when i was hacked, however at the time my identity was stolen it was on an XP machine connected directly to a cable modem via a RJ-45 cable, not a wireless network....it doesnt make sense to me though that someone would hack a single computer on a network just to change the security key so pesumably im being paranoid, at least i hope so,,,by the way, the 2 XP machines are functioning normally in case i neglected to mention that earlier

wow, some people are touchy,,i just got seriously flamed on the 2 other boards i requested help from for not responding quickly enough,,you'd think they'd stop and think that if i was suffering computer problems, and posted that i was seeking help on a couple forums, they'd understand if i didnt immediately jump back with an answer to their posting

could you tell me where i will find the restore feature, and, what will i lose?
