This Earth Hour thing reminds me of the myriad ribbons I see on cars that "support" a thousand different causes.  What do the people do besides slap a magnet on their car--besides support more workers  in China (where likely they are all made). How does a $1 magnet show support for anything?  Do you donate your time/money to the causes as well--or, like the myriad others out there, just head to Wal-Mart and buy a magnet?  I've *far* more respect to someone that will go donate their time/money/blood.whatever...than mouth some 'support'.  I can't help but wonder if ANY of the money that is used to buy the hundreds (it seems) of ribbons out there actually goes to the cause it claims to 'support'.

No, I didn't partake in "Earth Hour".  It's dumb.  I prefer to try to conserve my electricity, reuse what I can, and the like on a daily basis, quietly, and as part of my normal existence.  I won't parade my support for something for an hour which accomplishes nothing.

So much animosity to a simple idea. You don't like the idea of Earth Hour? Fine, go on about your business.

I did go about my business.  I was happily at a movie with my mate at the time, and yes, the lights at home were turned off--as they would be any *other* time I'm out.

hlen5 they haven't a clue how to just be. It's far more interesting to sit around on your computer and whine and complain about nothing.
Earth hour is simply a positive idea to conserve energy.... nothing more, nothing less. All the bitching  won't alter the good intention.

Animosity?  Towards the dictatorial and self-righteous, hell yes.  On the other hand, the cooling system I gave a nice long test to this afternoon is the swamp cooler, a much more energy efficient device than the standard central air system I almost never use.

I try to conserve energy because it is a good idea, not because I believe for an instant that it's going to save the poor polar bears (who would kill and eat any environmental whacko dumb enough to try and pet them).

Then conserve energy--*every* day.  Make it a habit, a way of life.  Making an ostentatious show for one hour a year is meaningless.

I like the idea, even though I didn't even know about it to be honest.  If for nothing else, it might just be kind of a realization to some people that, "You know, it's not that hard to cut down on energy use for 1 hour by keeping lights off in rooms we're not in, etc.  No reason we can't just keep an eye on small things like that the rest of the time."

No, 1 person, 1 hour, 1 day a year isn't going to mean squat, but, you get that little message through to 10,000 people (a paltry number really) and they keep an eye on that all year long, it does add up fast.

Personally, I don't give a flying green rats ass about it as far as an environmental standpoint, and I really don't have much else I could possibly shut off.  We keep the lights off here about 95% of the time anyway, because both partner 1 and myself are extremely light sensitive.  The only things that are normally on are the computers, and even those, half of them don't have displays on, as they're servers or media machines hooked to the tvs and surround sound system.  So, at most, running 3 or 4 computers and displays, maybe a lamp and the kitchen light if I'm making dinner, and I always have some music running.  I may not be 'doing my part' intentionally, but, I sure don't have much space to cut back.  It's nice too, I love low electric bills.

As far as summer, yeah, I'll have a couple window a/c units, one upstairs and one downstairs, and they suffice.  And I did go out of my way to find the most energy efficient ones.  Mostly because I'm a tightwad though (re: electric bills). ;)

Bah.  Do not worry about the wolves.  They are beautiful creatures.  Remember, it was *their* home first,  before humans encroached on it.  Send the wolves to Me.  I welcome the beasts.......

So I turned out all the lights and lit a candle to set the mood for a stimulating encounter.

Well, when my Dominant reared the bullwhip back in preparation for a strike, he hit the
candle and it fell over, igniting the fringe on the curtain, releasing streams of molten fabric
which landed on the back of the cat whom hissed and bounced off the sofa, setting the
satin pillows ablaze, which startled the chihuahua whom began spinning in wild circles,
causing him to spontaneously combust, which caught the throw rug afire, sending a wave
of licking flames up my Dominants used to be hairy legs, creating embers of his braided pubic
hair, recreating the stunningly hot scene of the burning of the harvest from the classic
Children of the Corn, as billows of poisonous smoke rose upward into the apartment of
my best lesbian friend Moe, which caused her to begin choking wildly, which convinced
her partner of thirty years Paddy that she was in the other room deep throating her ex
boyfriend Marion after they got stoned on the hookah, and she started throwing Moe's
overalls out the window, of which one pair landed on the windshield of the neighborhood
exotic dancer Twolips, whom swerved in a sudden panic thinking a lesbian had fallen
from the sky as punishment from God, as she squarely hit the courtyard lamppost which
fell softly against the power line, which sent brilliant sparks of ecstatic flickers across the
horizon catching enumerable curtains and drapes in a spectacular crescendo of flaming hell,
illuminating the charcoal night and therefore saving multitudes of watts and volts in the process.

Ahhhhh Earth Hour.

Can't wait until next year.

I personaly have always been very aware of my energy use.  I moved in with my Mistress six months ago.  Even with adding my power tools to the load the electric bill here has steadily dropped by about $2 every month.  This has been accomplished by simple things that have no noticable effect on daily activities.  I replaced nearly all the light bulbs with compact florecents.  While she need to leave her computer on at night to receive packets I've made it part of my nightly routine to turn off the monitor before going to bed.  I programmed the timers on the TV and cable box to shut off automatically for the nights she falls asleep watching her shows.  Lights that were normally left on at night like in the bathroom have been replaced with ones that have light sensors to turn them off as soon as daylight comes in through the windows, hours before we wake up.  All of this was done very cheaply and once in place only the computer monitor requires any action at all.

We did participate in Earth Hour, turning off and unplugging everything in our home except the refrigerator.  I think this exercise could have some practical results just because it would make people aware of how much stuff they have plugged in that consumes electricity all the time, even when they are not using it.  Also people might realize that they don't *need* a bunch of lights on all the time.  In just a couple minutes your eyes adjust and you can walk around comfortable with just light coming in through the windows.

While the lights were out we layed on the bed together talking and playing with the cats.

Sigh, all the sarcasm directed towards Mr. Gore. Don't you people know Al bought a million carbon credits to off set his new yacht?  Bet you a dollar he turned off the reading light on his plane while he flew back home too. And I'm sure someone will point out all the electricity he used in promoting E hour, but think of all those he convinced to turn off and do without.

Al has made a real difference in my life. Why just yesterday, I saw a pile of coal out back of someone's house and thought to myself. There's a new ebay market. I need to call the coal company up, get a delivery and stamp carbon credit on the side of each piece. Just think of all the carbon that will not be released when the green crowd buys them so they can't be burned!

Ok, sacarsm aside, I'm not a hater of green things. But some of the bullshit emerging from the movement is nothing more than an end around way of doing what you want to do while convincing yourself that you're doing something good for the planet. Got news for folks too. The planet will survive. We may not, but a million years after we're gone, it'll be a nice green haven for other things.

Besides, I'm much more likely to do things as either a manner of protest or because I don;t like big bills. Give me a couple hundred people and I can legally shut down just about any business in America. It's much more satisfying than sitting around in the dark singing camp songs for planet earth.

That pussy getting argument does have merit though. Gotta admit that.

Dangers of population increase with a "lights out" event....

Are you 40 years old?  Were you conceived in the Northeast United States?   Were you born in April/May ?

Chances are, if you were, you were an "event" during the blackout in August 1968.   And the amount of energy consumed during your lifetime because of that...well...you are your own carbon footprint !

In NYC, if it was known people were to turn off the lights completely,  it would be a perfect opportunity for looters, muggers, and thieves, oh my!!

So, chia- you had lights out, but not flames out???

You understand that batteries can be recycled right?

Probably better than you understand that we have precisely zero ability to control the climate on this planet.

Global warming is real and at this particular moment "we" are the cause.   Just because there has been climate chage in the past does not alter the fact that we are now the ones that are generating the co2.

I do enjoy the fact that so many are proud and unquestioning when it comes to jumping on board  the "wrongfiul" ideas of those that call for war that will lead to many of our soldiers paying the ultimate sacrifice. But when a large majority of scientists make an observation based upon scientific data which is championed by "certain hated" members of the left...It has no possibility of being "the truth."

Just watched a Nova show on the ice caps...caled "extreme ice"

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/extremeice/

Interesting shit.  Why is it impossible for us not to have an affect on our weather systems or global temps?  We can pollute the rivers, lakes and oceans to the point that they no longer act in an expected fashion...Why not our air?  Why is it such a leap to believe that if I continually pour shit loads of crud and Co2 emmissions into the atmosphere that a reaction would occur? Makes perfect sense to me.

But I have seen first hand the impact of man's waste on the environment.

The reality might be that there is little that one or two nations can do about global warming with so many third world and emerging nations burning fossil fuels.

But I believe.  It only makes sense. Jesus doesn't make sense. Ghosts they don't make sense.  No-limit subs make little sense.  Global warming resonates as being factual.  Walmart makes sense if you want to save some dinero. Global warming seems to be real. The scientists can now determine all the variants that lead to our weather and temp patterns.  The only thing unaccounted for is the additional Co2 that is currently in our atmospere which is due to man.   We....No, "you" are personally responsible...I hate you for being the cause of global warming.  Maybe you should drink your cocktails with less ice?

Anyways, it's real. It's happening and it is coming soon to a shoreline near you.

Was that show before or after they discovered that Arctic ice measurements were wrong and in fact had rebounded to levels of a decade ago? And that Antarctic ice was exceeding those levels?

To use some of the faulty math of the MMGW hysterics:

"Arctic sea ice went about 5.5 to 7 million square kilometers in just one year. If this trend continues, Arctic sea ice will cover every ocean and sea and lake in less than 17 years"
