My boy asked if he could call me 'master' instead of 'mistess' because "It sounds more commanding and less like cheating on your wife." To me, 'master' is gender neutral, even though some insist that there is a difference between the two words. It got me thinking. How many of you ladies have been called master at some point (or more than sometimes, if it's your thing)?

MasterFire comes to mind! But me, too, I dislike the word "mistress", and to me, "master" and "sir" are just fine.

i had a sub call me "master" years ago and i corrected him. the word is more for male dominants that female...but i have seen some femdoms call themselves "master". it is truly a preference...

Don't like it. The connotation is that male is automatically superior to female and that by dominating someone I am becoming an honorary man. I say no thanks to that, unless I'm actually roleplaying a male at the time. :P

"Thank you, Mistress" does not remind me of cheating on my wife. "My mistress wore a corset last night" does. That said, if ever a bottom, I use "Miss" as my go-to term of empowered endearment. I like the idea of "master" for a female dominant. I find perpetuating the gender difference is sexist. I try to avoid dom vs. domme for that exact reason.

The idea that gender-specific words are somehow limiting is a very 'English" (though not limited to just English) idea in that the language itself is very gender neutral vs. most of the other world's languages which are very UNgender nutral. "Dom" and "Domme" are pronounced exactly the same (unlike 'fiance' and 'fiancee'). I totally get the 'Mistress' sounds like cheating part and despise it when people call and/or wright to me using that phrase, but, at the same time, words really don't 'make the Master (or Mistress), their actions do. I find the use of phrases like 'my Mistress' more of an issue since they suggest ownership of the S-type. There are just so many semantic issues relating to BDSM/kink...we need a kinky Shrunk & White!

Uh... it's "Strunk and White"... though I must admit the phrase "shrunk and white" is awfully appropriate, given the cuckolding threads right now. [;)]

I don't like "Master" or "Sir", will NOT accept use of "Goddess," and prefer not to use "Ma'am" or "Mistress." The french "Maitrese" means the same thing, but sounds prettier, and doesn't feel like it has the same connotations. "M'lady" is really sweet, and romantic - that's what I've usually preferred, but I'm open to other options. I think "Sera" like in CJ Cherryh's novels about Cyteen might be hot, and I like the way it sounds! Domina and a few others are acceptable. My former boss, who as far as I know is completely vanilla, said she would rather be called "Sir" than "Ma'am," since it makes her feel old! slaveluci, I don't think that's it necessarily - a lot of people feel it has that connotation, even if they aren't dating anyone but the woman who is their Dominant. For me, it tends to feel a little more Ren-Fairish ("Mistress, wilt ye hither with me to yonder turkey leg purveyor?")

Further problem: 'Master' is an honorific for a boy, therefore arguably diminutive. I've never heard of the degree of "Mistress of Arts/Science". I don't think I've met a woman who's announced she'd want such a degree, either. It might be seen to have . . . . . rather specific connotations regarding the profession of its holder.

To me, courtesy is a good thing. I am not offended by it, even if the first attempts are misguided (ie, someone calling me "mistress"). It's perfectly simple to say, "Please don't call me that, I like to be addressed as ___________".

I wouldn't like being called master. Should have seen me the first time someone called me dude! lol I have since gotten used to dude and using it but said the wrong way or in the right setting... someone could get blasted. It all depends... but I don't ever think I would get used to be called master.

I find that completely funny, since My habit of calling people "Dude" came from the time I lived in CO in the first place. Now that I'm in GA, and everyone else is saying "y'all" I still get funny looks for addressing people in vanilla settings as "Dude." (Yes, the formal Lady Pact says Dude. Get the chuckle over with now and we'll continue with the discussion.) As for the term Master, while I am considered one in certain leather circles, it's never grown on Me. It's one of the few places where I find I don't agree with MasterFireMaam, who has written very eloquently in other places about her spiritual journey that relates to it. I very good read should anyone want to look it up.
