forgive my poor phrasing,,I forget sometimes how things can be interpreted when one cannot see the tone of the speaker's voice, or read the body language....i did not mean to imply imminent death.....i just have a serious matter in my household that is growing more and more difficult to manage

and luciouslips, all due respect ma'am, i do not live under a bridge, and always strive to be respectful towards everyone on this site

If someone in your house is having delerium tremens, than you need to call an ambulance right now. I've seen someone have them due to alcohol withdrawal, and they can die. It is a matter of life and death, call NOW.

Worse case...There can be a mortality rate that is really too high to ignore. Whoever is going through this needs medical attention according to what I read. There is no honor in toughing it out at such risk. Not worse case... I would still suggest professional help and not trying to manage something out of your control and that could be dangerous.

The best thing to do immediately is to get some alchohol into them, half a shot or half a beer. Mouthwash even.
The D.T.'s are caused by abrupt *withdrawal* from ETOH. (Alcohol.)
You need to titrate it downwards.

If someone is an alcoholic and has the dts, they need professional care. Get thee to an ER or detox center.

to all who responded, thank you,,unfortunately the matter is delicate and decidedly more complicated than calling an ambulance,,,,so if noone has any professional medical or substance abuse training and experience,i would appreciate it greatly if we could consider the matter closed

You just heard from at least three medical professionals on this thread. I am not one of them. But I know at least three so far.

Playing with fire can get you burned... either way it sounds like you have a situation that could explode in a couple of ways... Trying to cover it up.. with the knowledge you have just gained... and ignoring it and something going wrong... besides how you would feel... would you be legally in the clear becasue you knew of the danger and did not get help? Talk about sensitive, complicated and delicate!

Lockit, unfortunately you can't force an alcoholic into treatment. And I think Vincent's at his wit's end.

Vincent, unfortunately you may have to wait until they get hurt to get them into a hospital. At that point they will be detoxed. Librium is often prescribed to prevent seizures at this point.

You could try talking to a CAC in your area about doing an intervention. If so, you need to have a rehab that will accept the alcoholic immediately should they agree to go.

No maybe not, but I can sure as hell kick them out of my house! No way am I putting my household in the path... I'd go tough love real quick. They have their choice... as do I.

Well, my Dad's still in his own home. And 82 years old. When he finally fell down on the streets of Manhattan last year, he had a blood alcohol level of 2.0 He ought not to have survived.

But it took this to get him into the hospital, take control, and get the alcohol away from him. And reorganize his life to keep him safe. And the first few months were hell. Today it's better, but tomorrow? We'll wait and see.

Tough love didn't help. The less we would see him, the more he would drink. Sometimes you just don't have any options.

I guess I am used to a different system. We had detox and if they were drunk and/or a danger or in a state from lack of being drunk... and therefore ill... the ER trip and a manditory stay in psych care was the deal. I had to deal with this with my son... other adults in the past just got a divorce ( married or not) from me... I will not let their choice harm anyone in my household. I have supported people, but I will not allow them to kill themselves and take other's down with them. If there are minor's in the home and that is going on... you have a responsibility according to even the nice (sarcastic) agencies that would be called in if something didn't go right in a situation like this one.

There are lots of friends of Bill W. (and Jimmy K for that matter) on these boards. While not all of them are medical folks, there are some who have first hand experience.

I'd like to offer a very sincere apology to all of you who responded to my plea for help last night and were treated rudely by me....the situation is very complicated, and for personal reasons,i'd prefer to not divulge too much information over a public forum..perhaps DTs was the wrong choice of words, as that term conjures images of shakes, coma,and imminent death,,that is not the case here, but rather a protracted slide toward totally unpredictable behavior...unfortunately it's not a relative it's a friend, and my current personal situation relies on staying in her good graces but the situation is growing increasingly unbearable....upon looking up the DTs on a few medical sites they all seemed to agree upon one fact; the DTs do not have to come on as a result of a sudden termination of alcohol intake, but can be induced by prolonged ingestion of alcohol coupled with not getting proper nutrition,,,this person had a gastro bypass several yrs ago which has been diagnosed by several specialists as a massive failure, unfortunately they have been told by the same physicians that it is impossible to reverse as too many abdominal muscles have atrophied due to non-use.....add to this the fact that i was the victim of a hit and run yesterday while parked , and the immediate attack i suffered when i walked in the door by the person with the drinking problem,and i was in a terrible frame of mind...im not looking for sympathy,im not looking for absolution, i just wanted to publicly apologize to anyone whose feelings i may have hurt

thank you,,,,,,,my fear, and my secret hope, is she goes out of here strapped to a gurney,,,,and spends time in the hospital..not because i want to see anything happen to her, but because i dont want to see anything more serious happen to her
