popeye1250 -> Excercise works! (4/4/2009 4:48:25 PM)

A month ago I went on a rant because I was pissed that I couldn't lose weight.
I was up to 239 and my pants were choking me and I was in a foul mood.
Well, I've been going to the gym almost everyday.
One day I'll do 35 minutes on the treadmill then a full body workout on 12 differant machines.
The next day, my "off day" I'll just do 50 minutes on the treadmill and 50 crunches in the standup chair.
Also, I'm trying to eat healthier and breakfast of some type everyday.
So, today I stepped on the scale and it read,........... "229.0"
YAY!!!!! Ten pounds gone!
My pants fit much better and I can see my gut has gone down. And I have an incredable amount of energy!

[sm=applause.gif][sm=applause.gif]  Wonderful!!  Isn't it a rush to not only see lower numbers but to wear your clothes without feeling like a button will fly off and put someones eye out?

UPSG -> RE: Excercise works! (4/4/2009 5:17:03 PM)

Congrats.

You're doing much more than what I suggest to people just to stay in minimum health: To walk.

Weight and physique has a lot to do with age and genetics so I'm not to critical or judgmental of overweight people et cetera.

Lifestyle of course has a major impact as well, but even when considering that we need to be cognitive of how urbanized, auto transported modern society effects the average persons ability to work their body the way people in more rural societies were centuries ago.

I read once that Sardinia and a few other less advanced societies in the world, had longer life expectancy rates than the United States. These were - or are - societies where old men and women still walk down and up hill to fetch water.

Not everyone needs to workout like Mike Tyson, a professional swimmer, or like they're in gymnastics. But I think frequent walks are a good thing (unless you live in the ghetto, then maybe not).

popeye1250 -> RE: Excercise works! (4/4/2009 5:25:32 PM)

UPSG, I walk in addition to all that excercise too.
Tommorrow after I do my full 2 hour workout and come home and shower I'll celebrate with a three mile walk on the beach.

barelynangel -> RE: Excercise works! (4/4/2009 5:52:02 PM)

Just an aside, if you find you are having time trouble, try the HIIT -- High Intensity Interval Training. Which the simplest that my trainer has me doing is revolutions on the elliptical -- i start out doing about 45 revs per minute and then after 2 minutes i bump it up to 60-65 then drop back dpwn for 2 minutes etc. But basically what you are doing is moving your heartrate up and down as you move your pace faster to slower etc. You can adjust it to anything you are doing -- walking 2 minutes running 2 etc.

Its a really good way to get the most out of a short or long work out and the constant changing up means you have more cals burned that a stable pace.

Just some trivia. angel

Barely, I do that on the treadmill, from 2.5 elevation up to 3.0, 3.5, speed from 2.9 up to 3.3 and back down.
And as for the machines I I've slowed down the reps to get more benefit.
My arms, back, shoulders and chest are starting to get hard!

Okay....listen up all you "happy go lucky" peeps....

I've done some research on this shit and I can tell you....exercise is a KNOWN cause of cancer!!!!!

(Okay....maybe it's not a "known" cause....but who the hell wants to take that chance?????)

(Where's my ice cream??????)

barelynangel -> RE: Excercise works! (4/4/2009 7:15:53 PM)

smiles, please call me angel or barelynangel. My trainer showed me that little trick when i didn't have time to do cardio so i was skipping it completely and she gave me no reason to miss it lol

Good luck and contrats.

Congratulations.  Especially for having the sense to use lower impact exercise methods.  I once lost a lot of weight but used high impact exercise and have paid for it in later years.  As for exercise causing cancer, I have never heard of that.  I have heard that being over weight can contribute to cancer.  Good luck and continued success.

I'm trying to be good this morning.  But, I will highlight the part that made me [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m28.gif[/image].  That can be very, very painful!!  Don't try this at home. [:D]

Hey Mark, yeah I do a little with free weights but at this point mostly the machines because the trainer told me that they "isolate" the various muscle groups and focus on them.
Plus, the free weight section of the gym is full of the muscle guys who leg press 800 lbs or so, I'm certainly not in their caliber.
I want to lose some weight, down to 200-210 lbs and be "fit".
I like the Clint Eastwood look rather than the Arnold Schwartzenegger look.

sublace -> RE: Excercise works! (4/5/2009 9:24:55 AM)

The Clint Eastwood look is HOT!   [:)]

Go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

friggen april snow storms...

MissMorrigan -> RE: Excercise works! (4/5/2009 9:38:21 AM)

Go for it, Rainy. The first two - three days will make you ache a little, but after that you'll start feeling really good and notice an added spring in your step. When I stayed in Austin, our apartment complex had a gym albeit a small one and I loved using it. Until then I had never come across gyms in such close proximity and it's such a good idea so why not take advantage of it.

Rainy, do it!
Take it slow for the first week so that you don't hurt yourself.
Use light weights and cardio and *slowly* work your way up.
A month from now you'll be able to see the results and you'll sleep better and have more energy.
The trick is to stick with it, everyone wants results right away but it doesn't work like that.
If you go slowly and stay with it in 90 days you'll be very pleased with yourself for doing it! You'll feel much better "psychologically" too for accomplishing so much!
