In January 2002, a disgruntled student pilot stole a Cessna (or some other type of small airplane) from a Saint Petersburg, FL airport, flew it over MacDill AFB in Tampa, and straight into a bank building in downtown Tampa. Luckily, there was very little fuel on board and there were no explosives packed into it. Inside the wreckage of that plane a note was found, later confirmed to be written in that student's handwriting, that praised Osama bin Laden's attempts of September 11, 2001. Luckily, no one in the building or on the ground was injured or killed. The bank building did suffer moderate damage but none to the extent where its foundation was significantly impacted. However, the student pilot was killed. A huge bruhaha came about as to why this small plane was allowed to fly over restricted airspace unchallenged. It wasn't until it swerved back out over Tampa Bay that a US Coast Guard chopper tailed the aircraft. No one anticipated the student's suicide crash into the building. I bring all this up because small aircraft ARE a big security risk. Even a Cessna, loaded with the right type of payload -- and it doesn't have to be of the explosive kind -- can cause a tremendous amount of damage.
