I'm curious who in these forums writes something like poems, stories, songs, that kind of thing and if you do, what you usually write about.

I used to write fanfictions all the time, right now it is more the dark kind of stories or sometimes short and a little bit depressive poems or songs.

I write poetry and short prose (generally about whatever springs to mind at the time.  I like writing).

I also sometimes do a bit of freelance gig reviewing for the local press.

I've written countless pieces of poetry - most of which I've refused to allow others to read, a few pieces of which were published back in the late 80s/early 90s through a collection published by the college I was attending.  I've written several short stories and a couple of longer novellas, none of which I've even considered having published.  I frequently do filk music with my medieval group, and I'm gaining a reputation amongst that same group as a storyteller for on-the-fly story creation during bardic circles.  I've written a couple of pieces of completely original music for that same group, but have yet to attempt to perform them in front of an audience - the lyrics are more my forte than the composition itself, though I've been a professional singer in my past.  I simply don't have much of a gift for composing the melodic line and harmonies, as opposed to the lyrics to go with someone else's melodic line.

Genre has varied for the poetry and short stories.  Primarily things taken from my own life - my emotions, my instincts, my experiences for poetry pieces - often written specifically to help me work through something particularly painful.  For written short stories, it's been a mix of sci-fi/sci-fan, the occassional bit of romance (usually of the cheesy variety), and semi-fictional retelling of events that happened in the medieval group.  The stories on the go are always themed appropriate to the medieval group in some manner, and the filk lyrics are always specific to that group as well - and lately, quite a bit of my poetry has been also, as I've been writing pieces specifically for compitition within that group.

I am a writer, well attempting to be unfortunatly I am not very good but thankfully my publisher has failed to realise that just yet. I write stories, mostly self depricative melodramas about my own personal exsistance, very dull to be honest.

Hello Lisa,

I have written numerous songs, poems, stories, scripts, etc.  During my college years the focus was on essays and analysis so there was little time for creative outlets.  Now I am feeling the need to get back into the mystic groove.

I write short stories, novel-length fiction, and some of my essays have been published.  I'm majoring in creative writing and I also work at the university publishing house as an editorial assistant.

Sylvere,

I anticipate you becoming a very popular author for a particular type of reading audience.

LOL, thanks!  Though I have to admit, I'm enamored with the editing side.  I think I like it even more than writing.  I'd love to work for one of the major fiction publishing houses someday.

I primarily write poetry.

edit to add:

A few of my poems are in an international on-line anthology out of South Africa, for which I also penned the introduction.

Occasional poetry, and torturing myself with a novel I'll probably never complete.

Yup. Short stories mostly. Several screenplays that went nowhere, (but I did get money for) And, like so many "wannabe" authors, I have a couple of books gathering dust in the bottom drawer. (and a few rejection letters... I have them framed on the wall.) I suppose I could get published... but I DON'T want to write a Star Trek novel, or something that appeals to the D&D crowd. (It seems to be a cycle... First TSR tried to become a fantasy publisher, then several of the video game companies, now WOTC recently gave up on publishing fantasy and science fiction novels... I suppose the folks behind Worlds of Warcraft will be the next company to make an attempt...)

I write, mostly technical pieces.

I have no outlet for personal stuff.  Recently I had an
unusual experience which I mentioned to a friend from
the other side.  Her reaction caused me to put it into
written form.  Then I shared it with some people on here.
I got a few "wows" and one lady suggested I put in as a
journal entry, so I did.

It is nice to have an outlet for the personal stuff that I can
not do in public for professional reasons.

It's so funny for you to say that, Sylvere, I feel the same way

To the OP. I'm a general writer. Mostly poetry, some songs (that I usually compose music for the lyrics but I don't know how to write for guitar, and truly stink at writing percussion and set)... but I also write fiction, and I'm working on writing a memoir (I know, 21 is too young :P I'm starting it now so that it's not so hard later). I've got a good few storylines and plot sets for a couple novel sets, actually. One set (about a character that I actually got my username from) is mapped out for eight or ten books (that's a long story), another for three, and yet another for four (these are all in the same universe). I'm still world-building for another book-map that I have with a character that I love, but that's very rough. I actually had one of the books for the Aravain series fully written at one time, but lost it due to a computer death D: not too bad, the writing was quite shoddy and it needed heavy editting, but that's still very disheartening.

*shrug* Currently I'm working on a book of poetry as my primary project... I've got about 27 of the poems written, only three through full editting. I'm planning on pitching it with 100... so I've got a fair bit to go. It's meant to be a book of depressing (or disheartening) poetry... which means that it's taking longer to write for, since I need to really 'be in the mood' to write them out... though, I've been kinda busy and haven't been able to edit yet, either *shrug* I'm planning on it being one of those simple, small hard-cover books, plain... the type that you put on a coffee table, or in a bathroom that people pick up when they're wondering what it is. A tasty nick-knack type of thing :) probably will never actually get it published (and will just do a couple self-published copies for myself and friends)... but it's fun to work toward.

i have a few poems published, a few news articles .... sneeze and one could miss my blurbs.

Like most who have commented, i have a novel in the making. Me, myself and i happen to be said novels biggest hurdles ..... i just keep picking and poking ... twisting and tweeking.
i tend to write as i would talk , and my subject matter covers that which i know, or am attempting to gain knowledge on .... myself(the good, the bad, and the wtf).  i jabber on and on in my journal on Cm, as well as on my Yahoo 360 blog, five journals that differ greatly and are on going, the back of my bedroom door is overflowing with post-its(aka my idea board), and i have pads of paper and pens everywhere.
The day shall dawn ..... until then there is much i choose not to surrender.

A novel, in a box, on a shelf in the garage.  Someday it will be time to pull it out for a complete overhaul.
