OK.   So my wife has worked for the same firm for the last 8 years.  She is an Architect and including the 2 owners there are 10 people working there.

So today she goes into work and gets an email from the Bosses, they inform her that tomorrow will be her last day with the firm, they have to lay off 4 people because the business is slow.  Ok Fine, I understand layoffs

But a fucking email when you are sitting in your office, less than 20 feet from her and you don't have the balls to inform any of the people to their face!!!  8 years and you get an email!!!!!

I mean I've been fired from jobs...  Hell I worked at one for less than 8 weeeks and they still told me to my face.

Ahhhhh.....some people need to grow a pair.  I'm not looking for any sympathy, it's is just the low way they went about doing it.

Sure sure, I know people quit all the time and give no notice, but it seems if you call yourself a professional you should at least have the balls to lay people off to their face

I was laid off over the phone on a weekend last year housesub4you.  The motherfuckers had the audacity to demand I return so they could get my ID badge/keycard back.  I kept it for a month before I finally mailed it to them.  Everytime they called me, I'd say it's in the mail.

Housesub, yeah, that was kind of rude wasn't it?
At least they could have called her in the office and done it face to face and assured her that when things turned around she'd be brought back or something like that.
But, they're architects not managers I guess.
That surely wasn't the way to handle the matter.

housesub4you -> RE: Wow, some people have no balls...It's a rant (4/8/2009 9:02:47 AM)

Yea....It was a lousy way to go about it.

on a side note, the other day I found myself using your signature line when I met with a production company reviewing my latest work.  I do not believe they found it as comical as I did.  But hell I had a good laugh

angelwithhonor -> RE: Wow, some people have no balls...It's a rant (4/8/2009 9:06:05 AM)

....when many of us including myself got laid off (for me 21 yrs had been there).. they took us out to the cold cafeteria and read our names one by one...and of course the owners were sitting in their office a few doors down. the plant manager had to tell us. oh  and my supervisors had 30 yrs each in, got told at the end of the day. they dont have enough coohoonies to tell her that to her face, its called cowardness....good luck wife.......

~~FR~~

6 months after I was fired from a Nat'l company
the woman who fired me, was fired.

She got to the office,
as I am told by friends still there,
and found the local Wauwatosa police waiting for her.

I think she would have preferred an email!
But then they would have had to call the police anyway.

If you have ever had to fire someone,
no matter the situation,
you need to grow a set of balls to do so.

I think telling them that you'd email it to them would have been appropriate.

housesub,
Unfortunately, your wife's story isn't newsworthy because it is becoming much more common. Its the mark of a coward organization personified by the cowardly management. When management and employees are not working as a team the business WILL fail, working together it will succeed; regardless of the economy.

These times are bad for many people. It doesn't mean you can't relate to people and relate to them on a personal level when you have to deliver bad news. Letting them know you feel bad and this action is not only the 'worst case' but the 'last resort; would go a long way to easing the pain. It has a simple requirement - being human. Looking your wife in the eye would have required human empathy. Obviously your wife's firm or at least that office, didn't meet that standard.

The only thing I can suggest is that, if your wife's employer is a division or or part of a larger entity, have her send a letter to the parent company and/or owner. A nice letter, exhibiting the exact courtesy, confidence, and direct representation that she didn't receive. It may not get her job back, but it will be a good purging exercise for her. It may also open a few eyes at the company about what they lost.

Meanwhile, do your best to cheer her up and make her know she's special!

Maybe this will help; another form of cowardice the TEXT MESSAGE BREAKUP

housesub4you,

This type of behavior is increasingly common now and it is humiliating in the extreme to the people loosing their jobs and cowardly on the part of management and owners.

I suggest having a cooling off period and dealing with the mental/emotional fall out for a week or two as best you both can and then moving forward.  Or alternately your wife might be the type to throw herself into looking for another position, that is also a form of therapy and can help a person feel in charge of their life again.

Mercnbeth have great advice on how to handle interaction with the previous employer.

Both of you take care and remember there is always someone Online here, even in the wee hours of the morning if you need to talk.

I can't help but wonder if society is slowly carrying its poor internet manners into real life.

Unfortunately, social graces and honorable conduct seem to be viewed asoptional by many.
Best wishes to your wife for finding a new job.

I think its deplorable to do that to a human being! Good luck in finding a better job with actual Human Beings that have a heart and conscience.

When the going gets tough some people fall into their worst habits and others try to be on their best behavior.  [&:]

Relating to people on a personal level seems to be a lost art in the management of any larger company these days- how can we expect it to suddenly happen when they no longer have a use for us?

I agree that this has a lot to do with why so many businesses are failing to begin with...

When I worked for a small company that was having hard times, the owner called a general meeting and told us what the situation was, and asked us to take a temporary pay cut to raise cash while he implemented a plan to improve things, and they improved... Large company, we get an email saying thanks for everyone's efforts at improving our bottom line over the past quarter, and by the way, we're all getting a pay cut effective immediately. Somehow I get the feeling this one isn't going to turn out quite as well. [8|]

A dear friend was project manger for a construction company for 10yrs. The boss text messaged  him and told  him he was laying him off.  He had just seen the boss in the office an hour before and he had acted like nothing was wrong not mentioning the lay off.  My friend said he was in his car when got the message and pulled over  and threw up on the side of the road. He had just built a new house and he and his wife had just had their second child.

My friend said he went to all the contacts he had dealt with in the ten years as project manager for this company and decided to take a leap of faith and start up his own company.  A year later he had made  his first million.

I feel for your wife. What a horrible way to get such devastating news.  I think it shows a great lack of integrity and consideration to not be honest and upfront with someone on such a critical and emotional issue.  I will certainly keep you both in our prayers. Good luck.

I am very sorry to hear of your wife's situation, housesub4you.  Having been in the position of having to lay someone off, I know it's hard even getting the news face to face.  The email delivery is just unconscionable to me.  I'm sure that she will ultimately look back and be thankful to have left a gutless manager.  I hope that good fortune smiles upon you both.

yours

BKSir -> RE: Wow, some people have no balls...It's a rant (4/8/2009 11:58:42 PM)

I'm not sure what's worse...  What they did, or me, that actually loves to fire people sometimes.  Oh, come on, like there aren't those people you've worked with that you would give your left nut/ovary just to call them in and coldheartedly fire them.  In general, no, I never like firing anyone, not for fiscal reasons.  Thankfully I've only had to do that a couple times and have had the balls to let them know to their face, and hand them a letter of recommendation, and give 2 weeks.  Otherwise, if I have to fire someone because they're fuckups, I have NO problem doing so.

I recall on one occasion I was working for a deli as head of catering and delivery, and I get a call that one of my delivery people called a customer a jackass under his breath because he didn't tip.  Now, this customer was a regular of ours for a LOOOONG time, and some days he didn't have the petty cash on hand to give a tip.  He always, ALWAYS made up for it the next time.  Well, I get a call while the kid was walking back (the place was only like a block away), by the time this kid got back in the door I was standing there with his jacket and final paycheck.  Some shit just don't fly.

But in your wifes case, well, those are the kind of people that I would love to fire personally.  I just hope the homes they design have a stronger spine than they do.
