None. "stuff like this" comes from people's perceptions, writers will use subjects and arguments that connect with existing prejudices, rather than invent new ones. Besides, considering there are law enforcement consultants involved with the plots of Law & Order, do you know that the supposition is incorrect?

So this guy likes to drill holes in women's heads and the detective doesn't comment about lack of a Home Depot or Lowes marketing circular?  I would think that would be the perp's wanking material.

"So Mr. Smith, what's this weird brown splatter on your Saws-All?"

Orrr...

"Fred, I was going through your junk mail, while I was using your bathroom, trying to see what Home Depot has on sale but the pages are all stuck together......."

Ahh well in this case the argument was he was a really sweet lonely guy, he just wanted someone who wouldnt leave him, if anything the idea of violent porn went against his MO

Um he was a lonely guy who DRILLED holes in chicks heads. Let us not forget that part. How is violence not part of his MO?

And let us not forget the brain surgery manuals - oh, I forget, he did have those. When you get to these scenarios you know a series has been on the air too long, or needs new writers, or all of the above. Mind you, this being Manhattan, you can probably get a suitable drill around the corner easier than to traipse to Home Depot. I don't think there'd be flyers from anyone, anyway, they shoulda just checked his email and favourites..

So this could fit into the media topic too I guess but I want to open it up to more than simply the example I am going to give here. I was watching 'law and order: Criminal intent' last night (I find the dude pretty sexy, god knows why) Anyways theres a mad psycho killer, drills holes into womens heads because he wants a girlfriend. Fine, but then when they search his room and find his porn they say

"Well thats odd, where is the bondage or violent porn"

Hmm well there is a hell of an assumption, Its so subtle but a completely sound way to reinforce the idea that all of this is an indicator of mental instability, it did make me roll my eyes a bit.

Right so now I have to form it into a question, what impact do you think that stuff like this will have on peoples perceptions, and do people have any other examples?

I am soooo glad I don't watch shows like that. Life is too short.

I think the average viewr would assume that the average perp watches violent porn and is involved /obsessed with bondage.

I think it is a common assumption that watching violent imagery goes along with practicing violence. I don't know how statistically accurate that is.

It's violent upbringing's that make people violent, not violent films. They say the child is the father of the man. Many convicted serial killers and professional assassins report having a violent childhood; the old man was forever beating up mum, etc.

There have been many studies done on the correlation between pornography and criminal sexual offenders and the results of those have been high enough that it would be difficult to view them as coincidental. There does indeed seem to be a correlation. Many believe that the correlation is causal. I have a harder time believing that. It's kind of like saying that rock n roll makes people murder.

A strong correlation in itself is NOT proof of causation, it only suggests there may be some kind of relationship between the two.
To say that a strong correlation is evidence of causation is to jump to conclusions.

If offenders are excited by violence it makes sense that will posses a lot of violent material. It was reported that Ian Brady used to read true crime books about real-life serial killers and thought they were great adventure stories, whereas most people would be appalled. Should we ban true-crime books?

I suspect most stories of violent films encouraging real-life violence are by two-a-penny journalists scraping the bullshit barrel.
