That moment last night when the one guy they didn't want to shoot was in the ocean, and all the others were still in the boat, was as good as it gets.

A burst across the bow from the close-range gun...

We also have these crazy guys who work for us.  They do things like jump out of airplanes, into the middle of the ocean to board destroyers, stay underwater for hours, kill bad guys in all sorts of creative ways, rescue hostages...

The FBI is handling negotiations from Quantico.  Do you really think the Captain of the Bainbridge is dictating the rules of engagement?

Not a bit, Cagey.  I'm just trying to paint a picture.  President Obama is the Commander in Chief.  "In the loop," in that context means if he knows about it, he ok'd it, and had complete authority to order something else.  If he put the FBI in charge, his order determined the mission of the ship.

And if the guy ended up getting killed, you and your`s would be the first call Obama a bungler.Typical.

The FBI`s got their best hostage negotiator on the job.No one`s died,....yet.

This isn`t for your personal edification.

You shouldn't project so much, O59.  I'd be sticking up for the decision, for reasons that would still annoy you.  At least until it got hijacked into a guns thread.

Again, this isn`t for your or anyone`s edification.Sorry, you don`t get the Hollywood ending.

The guy`s wife wouldn`t mind waiting a bit if it meant her husband survives.

That word you used?  I do not think it means what you think it means.

Actually, it is for the world's "edification."  Much more will be learned about him from his deeds and decisions here, than in all his well-spoken words so far.

Part of what makes this situation so difficult in my eyes, and why I'm reluctant to second-guess the folks dealing with it, is that I'd like to see two different, and perhaps contradictory, things happen:

(a) I'd like the world, particularly Somali pirates, to conclude that messing with Americans is a singularly bad idea.

(b) I'd like Capt. Phillips to make it home alive.

Deciding if we can achieve both these goals--or, if we can't, which gets sacrificed--strikes me as the crux of the matter.

How about "B" first, and as soon as he's safely on board, whistle up a flight of F-18s to achieve "A".

I don't see how the pirates think killing the Captain could be even remotely a good idea. He dies, so will they. The boat is outfitted for week's worth of supplies I hear. The pirates know they're not going anywhere. What's wrong with waiting it out?

I do agree the outcome should strongly persuade the pirates from a repeat.

How about a Marshall plan for Somalia? If these people had food and a stable government, they might give up the piracy gig.

I would personally cut those fuckers all in half with a 50 cal. machine gun and mail them home in pieces.

But not if it meant the caption might be hurt or god forbid, lose his life.

Seriously, why don't we look at the piracy problem as a whole? Why are so many Somalis involved in piracy? Because there are SO FEW OTHER OPTIONS.

The Marshall plan came about because world leaders realized the devestation of Germany in WWI and Germany's overly long road to recovery led to Hitler coming to power. The Marshall plan helped Germany get back on it's feet after WWII.

Somalia is in major trouble and piracy is a way to survive. Let's (the world, not just the US) get Somalia back up and running like the autonomous and prospering country it should be. Maybe then piracy will be an abberation, not routine business.

The FBI is handling negotiations from Quantico.

Not according to a story currently being distributed by Reuters:

"The Bainbridge, which is leading negotiations for Philips' release, is seeking a peaceful outcome to the standoff with the assistance of FBI experts, a U.S. official said."

There are a lot of things that we don't know, or at least that I don't know, about the situation at the time. How close was the destroyer? What were the sea conditions? But, Richard Phillips knew. And if you will presume with me that he isn't an idiot who got his Captain's papers through mail-order, and that he has no wish to widow his wife, it is not difficult to conclude that he dove into the water fully expecting to come up and find his captors in the condition you describe. Because unless he is fool enough to have imagined that they would just let him swim merrily away, he did it to give the destroyer the chance it needed to open fire without putting him at risk. And if I were in his place right now, I suspect I'd be thinking, "Well thank you very fucking much, Navy. Y'all having a nice lunch over there?"

You`re assuming that the Navy could have but did`t right after saying you did`t know squat.

I would suggest we let the professionals handle it and save the spears for later.

I know that some are a bit anxious want Action!

But we are here comfy and punching key pads while the Capt. and some very desperate men are on the open sea in a death hold.

If they can wait,so can we.

As I recall, Hlen, something along those lines was experimented with 15 odd years ago.  Perhaps you should google up 'Black Hawk Down" and see how it turned out?

For those thinking in terms of snipers and 50 cal. machine guns, let's introduce the Phalanx 20mm system...

If you're going to respond to my posts, try to read them? My point (follow me closely here) was that Richard Phillips was there, did know the situation, and didn't wait. Draw your conclusions from that, and leave your personal assumptions about what I'm "assuming" out of it.
