      Of France?

No I do not think so.  Rambo would agree with Deline that the French nation  is  not of much use since its citizens do not play golf and do not know how to win wars.

They don't play golf? Fucking barbarians!

Oh. Wait. I don't play golf either. I got myself mixed up with someone else. Never mind!

<fast reply>

Part of what makes this situation so difficult in my eyes, and why I'm reluctant to second-guess the folks dealing with it, is that I'd like to see two different, and perhaps contradictory, things happen:

(a) I'd like the world, particularly Somali pirates, to conclude that messing with Americans is a singularly bad idea.

(b) I'd like Capt. Phillips to make it home alive.

Deciding if we can achieve both these goals--or, if we can't, which gets sacrificed--strikes me as the crux of the matter.

How about "B" first, and as soon as he's safely on board, whistle up a flight of F-18s to achieve "A".

        The latest update:

"The negotiations between and American officials have broken down. The reason is American officials wanted to arrest the pirates in Puntland and elders refused the arrest of the pirates," said the commissioner, Abdi Aziz Aw Yusuf. He said he organized initial contacts between the elders and the Americans.
Two other Somalis, one involved in the negotiations and another in contact with the pirates, also said the talks collapsed because of the U.S. insistence that the pirates be arrested and brought to justice.

Actually saw an interesting interview on CNN last nite,it was late and for the life of me I can't remember the mans position much less his name.Anyway one point he made,as far as how yo handle this shit so it doesn't reoccur(not so much how to handle this incident)is to arrest the elders from the pirates villages. That of course garnered my attention, this mans point was that these people don't have the same view of individual guilt.....they beleive in collective guilt. The idea being holding the elders responsible for the crimes of others would deter this behavior in the future.
Now of course the idea of collective guilt is anathema to our system and I'm not suggesting this be done...but we are going to have to deal with these people in some fashion that ensures this shit stops.

Do you think we would be in a better position to address the bigger issue if we hadn't demonstrated to them that we are hesitant and sluggish in our response?

This is very good news.  And yes, Lorr.  It could have been over on Friday.

Can't find a good link yet, unless I go to a blurb on the FOX website.  But then people would say it was all a lie...

Yep... here's the AP wire:

WASHINGTON (AP) - The U. S. Navy has rescued the American sea captain held by Somali pirates.

A senior U.S. intelligence official said hostage Richard Phillips was not hurt in what appeared to be a swift firefight off the Somali coast on Sunday. Phillips was safely transported to a Navy warship nearby. The official said three pirates were killed and one was injured. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Unh huh... by the way, here's the Fox News "spin":

Ship Captain Rescued from Somali Pirates

American sea Captain Richard Phillips was rescued from four Somali pirates Sunday, a U.S. intelligence official said. Three pirates were killed and one was in custody after what appeared to be a swift firefight off the Somali coast, the official said. Phillips, who was not hurt, was safely transported to a Navy warship nearby. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Yep yep yep. Ain't it crazy?

CNN is reporting that Capt. Phillips jumped overboard a second time to make it happen.  Better late than never.

It's always amusing when some Chairborne Ranger thousands of miles away thinks he has a better understanding of the situation than those on site.  Perhaps next time you should get in touch with the military and tell them how they should be handling the situation?

Great news that the Captain is safe and in American hands.
Rich to be fair I don't recall suggesting that we be hesitant and sluggish,if I posted such advice please point it out to me.

That's one way.  The other is that the pirate ships are well armed and I suppose it would be impossible to mistake a subsistence shipping boat for one.  If so, just send one aircraft carrier there, dispatch fighter planes from it, and sink all the pirate ships that are in dock.

Seems likely that the Captain jumped overboard the first time before the SEAL's were in position. The second time I assume he found SEAL divers waiting for him.
