we are going to have to deal with these people in some fashion that ensures this shit stops.

I read something somewhere (don't know how true it is) indicating that the reason these commercial vessels have continued to operate unarmed and defenseless in pirate infested waters is because of liability fears and insurance costs, i.e., that the shipping companies figure it's likely to be cheaper in the long run to pay an occasional ransom.

This strange incident off the east coast of Africa is shaping up to be that first test of our new President we knew would come.  This is a bad start to that test.

So, does this mean he passed the test?

Yes it does, RML.  No gold star, but a definite passing grade.

See?

Sooner or later we'll convert you.

You'll be eating off the Obama plates and watering the Obama Chia pet on your windowsill.

I heard the same thing on three separate news shows.

Yeah I heard that too Kirata...something along the lines that arming them would affect in a huge way insurance premiums....seems strange doesn't it.Increase their ability to defend themselves against this bullshit and your premiums go up.

The Captain was released after a swift firefight 3 Pirates dead....

I wonder if the pirates had even the first clue about American special forces. While I didn't like the captain's odds prior to his rescue, I liked the pirates' odds even less.

Well. since Obama was blamed for this situation earlier in the thread, can we get a Yea Obama out of you?

Sanity -> RE: Captain Richard Phillips' Leap of Faith (4/12/2009 2:07:57 PM)

No, this part of the article that Ironitulstahp posted has me wondering what kind of a victory this was:

quote:

U.S. officials said a fourth pirate had surrendered and was in military custody. FBI spokesman John Miller said that would change as the situation became "more of a criminal issue than a military issue."

If this is nw a criminal issue, I guess we need to read that fourth pirate his rights and appoint him a lawyer, make sure he's as comfortable as possible. See if he needs a foot rub,... you know. The works.

TheHeretic -> RE: Captain Richard Phillips' Leap of Faith (4/12/2009 2:09:20 PM)

It's going to be interesting, maybe edifying, to watch how the spin on this is played.  The latest talking point is: the White House had given "very clear guidance and authority" to take action if Phillips' life was in danger.

Which of course raises the question of when that order came down, and why they didn't figure his life was in danger when the pirates shot at/near him when he jumped overboard two days ago.

I'm very happy this ended well, though.
