Criminal proceedings have begun in Spain against six senior officials of the former US president George Bush's administration for the use of torture against detainees in Guantanamo Bay.

The officials named in the case are: Alberto Gonzales, a former White House counsel and Attorney General; David Addington, former vice-president Dick Cheney's chief of staff; Douglas Feith, who was under-secretary of defence; William Haynes, formerly the Pentagon's general counsel; and John Yoo and Jay Bybee, who were both senior justice department legal advisers.

If the judge decides to go further and issue arrest warrants against the six, it would mean they would risk detention and extradition if they traveled outside the US.

This is the same judge who arrested Chile's Augusto Pinochet for torture and murder in 2000.  Detained in the UK, extradited to Spain for trial.

And since there is no statute of limitations on war crimes, they would face arrest for the rest of their lives.  No vacations in London, Paris, Munich--anywhere in Europe.

Amazingly, Lawrence Wilkerson (retired Army Colonel and Colin Powell's chief of staff) predicted this a year ago:

"Haynes, Feith, Yoo, Bybee, Gonzalez and - at the apex - Addington, should never travel outside the US, except perhaps to Saudi Arabia and Israel. They broke the law; they violated their professional ethical code. In future, some government may build the case necessary to prosecute them in a foreign court, or in an international court."

Yep.  Plus it affects their families--many spouses wouldn't want to go by themselves.  No Mediterranean cruises either.

Too bad our own courts won't look into these flagrant violations of not just international law, but our own laws.

Yeah. The Bush administration was made up of some real winners, you bet.

The fact that Obama wants Bush and his minions to get away with trashing the Constitution, and their crimes is probably the worst thing I can say about the guy at this time. He's willing to look the other way while these people run free. So, in the future, the GOP will again run roughshod over all of America's ideals... and they'll know there will never be a price to pay for their treason.

Assuming, of course, that they ever regain control of Congress or the White House.  Remember that the Democrats controlled Congress for 40 years before the "stealth grab" of 1994.  The White House, well, that depends on what happens the next four to eight years.

And if the GOP splinters into two parties as is rumored, they can kiss goodbye any control for a long long time.

I like your thinking...a potential profit center for sure and with the ever 'cheaper' dollar (we be print'n them up 24/7) they could come in droves.

Funny isn't it that bankers can face these international courts of justice at the request of politicians but politicians don't often face similar consequences for their actions.

The bankers fucked up our world so it matters to us, we fucked up someone else’s part of the world and suspended human rights. Heh Human rights are not for those outside of the west, they don't get classed as human beings. Something terrible occured. History will record a bleak event with no benefit at all to mankind, we will have to tell those in the future that will never understand these actions on our part why no one was ever punished for it, whilst holding our heads up high saying isn't the west great.

I would be satisfied with Addington being hanged, drawn and generally butchered.

Actually it's not completely 'nothing' Lucy...two of the six are still unemployed (Gonzales and Addington), and I wouldn't be surprised if Yoo and Haynes get laid off if the warrants are issued. Bybee could be impeached..

"Under indictment for war crimes by a National Court" doesn't play too well on the ol' resume.  Maybe they could could work $10/hr construction jobs with Michael Vick? Fellow torturers and all that...

Easily solved (if you're a Republican).

Vacation in Detroit.

Old people can commit all the crimes they like. Just like when they run people over with them damned people trolleys no one ever breathalyses them. One woman fell asleep and travelled two miles across fields on one and at the end of it she said she could not recall events.

I've searched for an anti mobility device community on Google, nada.

There was, however, a 16-month detention in the UK under house arrest between "held" and "released".  He didn't just spend an afternoon in Heathrow airport security.
