Reality tv is the pits. But guess what folks it is here to stay. The financials alone guarantee that.No need to pay "talent" therefore production cost's are minimal....ratings don't need to be any more than respectable and you have a cash windfall.....we are so screwed...

No we're not. Just call the cable or satellite company to cancel.

You mean this isn't going to be about the European Oral

That sucks.

That must be why it's immulated all over the world.

I've been to several countries, and most of what is shown is American programming, or copied american programming in their language...

On the other hand, I dislike most reality shows...  Except recently have gotten into Millionaire matchmaker, crazy NY housewives, and Make me a supermodel, but only because I'm starting to get tired of Law and Order reruns.    M

Oh for the good old days of Wagon Train..Rawhide...Sky King and Charley Chan...Hopalong Cassidy and the Cisco Kid...good wholesome entertainment without sex and gore.

It's not entertainment if it doesn't have sex and gore.

Well, at least sex.

turn off the tv, nobody said you have to watch it.  personally i like the history channel and discovery channel.  sci-fi for times when i want to go mindless.  other than that, why bother, read a book!

And lets not forget this is the country that made the A-Team a hit year after year after year...

Thing I find funny is that it is so popular to slag reality tv off yet people MUST watch it because it is so popular, but then I rarely meet anyone willing to admit it

SultryItalian -> RE: American TV Sucks (4/12/2009 4:38:48 AM)

I was so frustrated with television that I sold my TV. Almost 2 years later, a friend of mine "forced" me to take her old TV because she thought not having one was "not normal". LOL The thing sat in my living room for 4 months before I finally got a DVD player. I just use it for movies. [8D]

LadyEllen -> RE: American TV Sucks (4/12/2009 6:25:53 AM)

The problem with TV is the same problem we find in democracy - its a mass participation activity reliant on appealing to the majority of the masses, and the majority of the masses are dumber than a box of rocks. This is a worldwide phenomenon.

Thus TV has been dumbed down over the years, progressing from "educate, inform and entertain" through "low brow" to today's "no brow". Although publicly funded broadcasting such as that of the BBC should not have to emulate this progression, a more understandable but no less lamentable phenomenon in commercial TV, even these broadcasters have succumbed to chasing the ratings in order to justify their funding.

The final glimmer of hope still exists however - as long as one doesnt need sleep and one dwells in the UK - every night, around midnight, they bring out the good stuff, the "educate, inform and entertain" stuff on the BBC, which along with no advertising makes the TV licence worth the money. But this is a forlorn hope of course - soon it will be gone, on the grounds that too few are watching and with no regard for the time of broadcast. This is a tide which cannot be turned - because ratings are what counts and the majority are as stated, dumber than a box of rocks.

But one thing is clear - however bad British TV has become, it still has a way to go to reach the depths of the US; given that over here we get the best, the remainder must be drivel. And for the US even its not that bad - anyone who has ever watched continental European TV knows that which we must fear.

Thank goodness for the Internet.

Sultry, I agree completely. Netflix may be the best thing to happen to entertainment in decades. (before that, we had TCM... there was also AMC, but then they turned to crap as well.)

There are a few shows out there worth tuning in. Most are on PBS, but there's also personal favorites like Mythbusters, The Universe, The History of Sex and /or Wired for Sex... I hate to admit it, but G4's Attack of the Show is the one media review show that I actually enjoy. (mostly because of Olivia Munn, Layla Kayleigh, and their resident sex expert... whos name escapes me for the moment.)

There's also something realatively new with "Current" tv. Mostly made up of user created content, it's sort of the "independant documentary" clearinghouse. Last night, for example, they had a great doc on the abuses of GITMO, and a second show detailing the lives of Somali pirates... Last October, they ran an expose' on the church "hell houses" that spring up every year, which slam gays and tries to lay the blame of societies' ills on everyone but christians. (of course)  Really good TV!

The thing is: Sturgeon's Law applies: 99% of everything is crap! If you want to get anything worthwhile out of your TV, you need to be selective. Highly selective!

The worst time of the year for me are the months of February and March. Football is over and Baseball hasn't started yet.

I canceled mine a year ago.   $63 a month - NOT

popeye1250 -> RE: American TV Sucks (4/13/2009 11:52:30 PM)

Then there's a show called "Paranormal State."
Ghostbusters saying ; "Hey! Did you hear/smell/see that?" for the whole show.
You'd have to be dumber than Patches Kennedy to watch that show.

Anguis -> RE: American TV Sucks (4/14/2009 3:16:45 AM)

I gave up on TV twenty years ago, the only thing hooked to the one I have now is the DVD player. Netflix is my friend.

MarsBonfire -> RE: American TV Sucks (4/14/2009 5:53:41 AM)

popeye, yeah, that's a trend that I find really disturbing about TV these days. The rise of the "supernatural" shows. Ghost Hunters, Paranormal State, UFO Hunters, Monster Quest... on and on and on.... Total crap! They never approach their targets with any kind of skepticisim, their "science" is nonexistant... they encourage people to believe in total shit.

This isn NOT what I call "serving the public good" as called for in FCC lisencing.

Mars, I agree, and the History Channel, one of my favorite channels has that crap on now!
"Oh, oooh, oooh,, did you see that!?"
"Ah,...No, I didn't see *anything.* you ghostbusters.
I think the people on those shows *want* to believe in that crap.
If anyone in here had them over to the house all of a sudden there'd be ghosts flying around everywhere pissing in your coffee and "the grays" would be peeking in your windows looking to grab you for some type of "experiment." After they left all would return to normal of course!
Very odd that wherever they show up all of a sudden has a large population of ghosts where there were none before.
"Oh, you just couldn't see them."
What a scam!

Yeah the History Channel has been going downhill with it's programming the last couple of years.  I keep wondering what the fuck Ice Road Truckin' and a day in the life of lumberjacks has to do with history.  I then have to wonder who finds watching lumberjacks and truck drivers to be a interesting use of an hour of their time.  If I want to watch guys chopping down trees, I can drive around town until I see a crew doing it in the flesh.

Slaveboy, correct. If you want to see people with real low i.q.s that Ice Road Truckers" and the "Lumberjacks" are the shows to watch.
Plenty of "beeping" out foul language and plenty of people quitting their jobs over a minor disagreement.
That show "Deadliest Catch" was very interesting but I think they tried to carry the idea too far.
You've probably seen that pitiful "Monster Quest" on there too.
They build up the story so that the audience thinks that there must have been a few Teraunisaurus Rex's that survived and are wreaking havoc in the countryside and at the conclusion of the show it just turns out to be a bear! lol
"Well,... there *could* be a bigfoot around here, ... *somewhere!*
"Hey,..... you don't suppose......"
"Yup, looks like the work of a Sabre Tooth Tiger to this happy camper!"
"Let's go to the nearest research Uni and waste a few days of their time!"

MasterG2kTR -> RE: American TV Sucks (4/14/2009 7:26:28 PM)

Popeye & slaveboy....you both got it right! Like I said in my OP to start this thread, "is this really the best we can do?" when it comes to programming? Now History and Discovery still both have some worthy programming. Things Like Universe, How It's Made, Blue Planet, and more. But I gotta agree with both that things like Ice Road Truckers, Axe Men, etc, are totally lame. IF (really big if) you watch just ONE episode of any of those, you've pretty much seen the whole season, and I have yet to see even one episode of any of them. Give me the intellectual stuff anytime. I'd rather watch something I may not comprehend, over something that will lower my IQ by 30 points.

Barring select educational programs, nearly all t.v. sucks and is a complete waste of brain cells.
