"Obama's handling of the crisis showed a president who was comfortable in relying on the U.S. military, much as his predecessor, George W. Bush, did.

But it also showed a new commander in chief who was willing to use all the tools at his disposal, bringing in federal law enforcement officials to handle the judicial elements of the crisis.

The rescue appeared to vindicate Obama's muted but determined handling of the incident. What won't be known for some time is whether Obama will benefit politically.

When Obama campaigns for re-election, he may take Bush's approach of turning any such incident into evidence of his leadership acumen. On the other hand, Obama didn't go before the cameras Sunday to trumpet the success, instead releasing a written statement that saluted the bravery of the military and Phillips but claimed no credit for himself."

Well done, Mr. President.

RRRRRRRRRRRRRr

Obama defeated those 4 pirates and there parrot too ;) HOORAY

We should have a statue and a national day of remembrance for Obama and the hero's.

Thats because we grade Obama with the largest curve ever ;)

now if he actually wanted to do something of substance about the problem why not also takeout all those ships that were trying to assist the pirates ;)

On Friday, the French navy freed a sailboat seized off Somalia last week by other pirates, but one of the hostages was killed. The vice president of the Philippines, the nation with the largest number of sailors held captive by Somali pirates, appealed for the safety of hostages to be ensured in the standoff."We hope that before launching any tactical action against the pirates, the welfare of every hostage is guaranteed and ensured," said Vice President Noli de Castro.Meanwhile, France's defense minister promised an autopsy and investigation into the death of a hostage killed during a commando operation, which freed four other captives and was prompted by threats the passengers would be executed. Two pirates also were killed. Three pirates were captured and are to be brought to France for criminal proceedings.Somali pirates are holding about a dozen ships with more than 200 crew members, according to the Malaysia-based International Maritime Bureau, a piracy watchdog group. The bureau lists 66 attacks since January, not including the Alabama or the Italian ship seized Saturday.

One thing`s for sure.

We won`t see the President make an aircraft carrier steam in circles(after a long deployment at sea) just to stage a photo op of him landing in a fighter jet, pose in a flight suit(w/ cod piece) and declare "mission accomplished",..... all pompous and blow-hardy.

No drama Obama!

slvemike4u -> RE: Obama beats first national security test (4/13/2009 1:29:30 PM)

Damm it to hell,I was looking forward to that.

Pirate the suggestion itself was a joke and a shot at our former President and his antics
Sarcasm 101....

Mercnbeth -> RE: Obama beats first national security test (4/13/2009 3:09:56 PM)

Truly a "first national security test" to be proud about. The ages, previously rumored before the action was taken, have been confirmed. President Obama authorized and approved military action resulting in teenagers being shot in the head.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Monday the four pirates were between 17 and 19 years old.

How interesting to witness those here proud to be represented by this action. How amazing to see perspectives and opinions changed based upon political agenda. Can't wait to see the outpouring of congratulations and support from the world now that Obama has "passed this test"!

Obama is proud! As should be his supporters. As a supporter said in another thread; "bullet to the head" for "common criminals".

I sit here marveling at the hypocrisy! "Mission Accomplished" in this case equals three dead teenagers, another imprisoned and perhaps being sent, according to the article, to a wonderfully managed and safe Kenyan prison for the rest of his life - granted probably not any shorter than what his life span would have been in Somalia.

And the 'neo-libs' rejoice and stand proud!

slvemike4u -> RE: Obama beats first national security test (4/13/2009 3:17:41 PM)

Well I'm not crowing about three dead teenagers Merc, though I am happy to see the Captain returned to safety.

DomKen -> RE: Obama beats first national security test (4/13/2009 3:58:20 PM)

Three hostage takers that by multiple reports had guns aimed at a US civilian with a stated intention of killing him.  Negotiation had been tried and had failed. It's unfortunate that three young men are dead but it seems clear no other outcome was likely except complete capitulation.

Now maybe we'll make an effort to restore the rule of law to Somalia which would make this old school liberal proud.

piratecommander -> RE: Obama beats first national security test (4/13/2009 4:21:32 PM)

There are a good few US bankers that have plundered more and caused more suffering, misery and death, when,I wonder does the bullet arrive in the right place/places to spare their victims?

Who is "we" and under who's law and by what right?

And what will "we" do when it starts to get expensive (I refer you to an example the retarded former US president prepared earlier)

i never rejoice in killing.  But had Captain Phillips died rather than these 3 criminals...it would have been the loss of an innocent life. That would be much sadder than the loss of three that made the decision to place themselves in harm's way by their choice of vocation.

http://www.sptimes.com/2002/09/01/911/plotters.shtml

The above link is a list of the names of the 9/11 terrorists. Some of the men were 20 and 21 at the time of the attack.  During the planning phaseof the attack,  these men were teenagers.  Youth doesn't make them less guilty in my eyes, and i wish to G-d thay had been stopped by sniper's bullets rather than live to cause the destruction they caused by their choice to harm innocent people.

servantforuse -> RE: Obama beats first national security test (4/13/2009 6:01:53 PM)

Would it be different if Bush ordered 3 pirates shot in the head while he was on the South lawn of the white house on an easter egg hunt?? Just asking...

slvemike4u -> RE: Obama beats first national security test (4/13/2009 7:38:56 PM)

No servant, under the same circumstances....I would still be happy the good Captain gets to go home to his family.A pity you can not find it in yourself to judge the situation rather than the occupant of the Oval office...oh well, can't have everything.I get my pleasure out of having an intelligent man sitting in that chair.....you get to have your hate and frustration....I'm cool with that.

Sanity -> RE: Obama beats first national security test (4/13/2009 7:43:42 PM)

Yeah, I'm sure that, had that been the case, the Liberals here would have rallied around hims and broken out in spontaneous chants of "He passsed the test! He passed the test!".

No doubt about it.

*skips along and sings, "Here comes Peter Cottontail, hoppin' down the bunny trail......." *

And to answer your question....it wouldn't have been different at all.  Personally, i don't consider Capt. Phillips' ordeal a threat to NATIONAL security....but my response to the actions taken to save him aren't based on who the President is.  It's based on the idea that the pirates were deadly dangerous criminals that had every intention of killing an innocent man.

Well actually sanity and servant one need look no further than his polling numbers following 9/11 for an answer to your questions. Are either of you going to deny our President enjoyed all the good will possible as this country "rallied round the flag".Don't blame us because Bush and Cheney sqaundered all that feel  good shit...hell the majority of the world was ready to "rally round the flag" till they started doing their "yur either agin us or for us "shit.

Sanity -> RE: Obama beats first national security test (4/13/2009 8:18:53 PM)

They didn't "squander good will" in any way, what happened was the far left began plotting to undermine the administration's every move as soon as the positive poll numbers came out following the 9/11 attacks. There may have been a very brief moment when most of the left was behind them, but that quickly gave way to petty resentment over their popularity, and the vicious attacks over every petty thing imaginable began in earnest.
