Morality: if you're fat and you want to fly, you'd better be ready to shed your dough.

Delta has started charging for checking ANY bags now as well. >:( The first one is no longer free.

And yes. If your fat ass has me mashed up against the wall because you can't even put your armrest down, so you use my ribcage instead....

Yes, gtfo, or purchase my seat so I don't have to sit under your armpit the whole time.

well they really ought to start making seats capable for adults.

I am not large- but find the seats less then spacious.

From now on- make everyone fly naked.   The clothes are weighing down the plane.

Sorry hon, I have absolutely no problem with this fee.

I spend a great deal of time in airplanes...easily 8 days a month.  I'm constantly amazed at how long it takes for the average airplane passenger to figure out upon literally inches from approaching their seat that "OH!!!! I might need a book!....OH!!!!! I might need one of the snacks I've brought with me.....OH!!!! I might need to figure out what card games, video devices, etc...." that they might want.

When I get to my seat, my books are in a separate bag, as is/are my sandwiches and water...and from the very second I'm parallel to my seat to the time I'm sitting in it and my luggage is in the above compartment and I'm attaching my seat belt....takes maybe as much as 4 seconds.

And yes....for those people who, for whatever reason....health, overeating or any number of issues....don't fit in a seat, I don't have an issue with their indignance as to paying for an additional seat.  You weigh more....it's a fuel thing.  And you encumber others.

I'm 5/10, 225....so I'm a pretty big boy, but I know how to keep my elbows in and my activities between my arm wrests.

There are many who do not, and there are many who, contrary to popular opinion, are not overweight because their bodies literally suck in calories from the surrounding atmosphere....rather, they have stacks of candy bars and ham sandwiches stuffed into the seat back....and they inhale them as if they were oxygen.

If I gain another 35 lbs, I'd have no problem spending more money on an additional seat.  Anything over 2 hours I fly in the front anyways....it's cheaper than 2 seats....and you get better food.

This is one of those issues that no airline wants to touch for fear of the explosion of bad press because we're offending people.

Fuck that....

I've gotten off flights before when pinched between two people who believe butter and sour cream are 2 of the 4 food groups....if you need a lap extender...you need to pay for 2 seats.

Period.

Lookie dear, I didnt offer any commentary. I didnt suggest that I had an issue with it either way. I just posted the link :)

My problem with it (and yes I've encountered this) is when you're required to pay for two seats because you weigh too much or are too tall to fit... but they don't *give* you two seats (or, in the height problem, assure you at least an exit row seat to compensate). They still box you in with other people in the seats right next to you.

It's a gratuitous way to make more money, not a way to ensure that larger passengers aren't a bother to the others. I could maybe *MAYBE* understand an extra charge for weight for fuel, but if it's the price of a 'nother whole seat, I better be getting two damned seats.

The airlines will eventually screw themselves. If you look at a flight attendant wrong you'll be arrested by marshalls when you land. They don't want carry-ons, but most charge for even the first bag checked. When I get a drink I have to charge each one separatly. Whats wrong with giving them $4.00 cash. I used to love to fly. Now it's a big ol pain..

They've made the seats smaller, and now they complain that they'll have to charge more for people too large to fit in their dinky seats.

It must be a full moon, because I'm agreeing with Lookie.

The airline is doing no more than renting you one seat for the flight.  If you can't fit in one, pay for two.

But they don't *give* you two, LP...

I'd agree with you otherwise (and be more than willing to pay for two when I fly).

No, actually most Coach seats have been around 17" width for years.  Seat pitch (legroom) changes occasionally since it's relatively easy (take out a row of seats or add a row, and adjust accordingly), but changing seat width involves buying all new seats and dumping the old ones.  Not cost-effective for an airline.

A better explanation is that passengers' asses have gotten wider, not seats narrower

That's the second time you've made that claim, and the article in the OP shows it's false.  If no empty seat is available (for the large person to spill over into), United bumps the passenger to another flight.

The barn door is so far open for a really bad joke at this point!

Somehow Cagey I think I would believe a persons experience over the claims of the airline. If they paid for an extra seat on a flight, then not only should they get that extra seat (in the same row next to each other) but not get bumped to a later flight if one isn't available. Bump them to first class if you have to at the Proper price. If First class is 400$ and 2 coach seats are 600$, then they get First Class at $400. Otherwise, Don't sell what you don't have.

Irregardless, there is a law in the US. called Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Title II - Public Services (and public transportation) directly impacts this. IF enough over weight persons decide to protest this action by the Airline and bring a Class Action Suit to force them to comply with Title II..airlines are not going to be happy about having to put in seats to accommodate the larger sized person. Discrimination is Discrimination whether it is denying someone housing, employment or transportation financially or by just saying no.

poenkitten who flies with Master at times and needs only one seat and whose Master spends up to 10 days a month on flights around the country.

"Claims" of the airlines?  Darlin', airlines don't put statements like the above-mentioned into print and on their website without it being checked by Legal first.  Otherwise, lawsuits ensue.
