I think you've gotten some good suggestions for "more appropriate looking" collars for your professional life.   A collar, a symbol between the Dom and sub.   It doesn't have to conform to any preconceived ideas of what it should be.    It can be anything that has the meaning of the relationship you want to honor.

Just to mention, in support of the turian (to give you more evidence to approach your Dom with) In three years, my girl's had just one person approach her in public and ask, very quietly "Is that a collar?". When she acknowledged, she got a very understanding, quiet smile in reply. This was from a complete stranger, BTW...

Everyone else has been fascinated (and oh, how we giggle at the stares she's had), but ultimately impressed with her unique and exotic necklace.

A bit of simple inginuity will allow you to hang jewelery from it. I uploaded an example to My profile pics, if you care to take a look.

Masterkvann: My last intention would be to question Your decisions, but the turian poses no strangulation risk, being solid metal, but I agree it's an incredibly effective method of coercion. Just ask My girl every time she lingers overlong at the creme cake counter...

No as a Dominant I would not expect you to wear a dog collar while you are at work. I purchased one of these wrist lockets for my male sub to wear while he is at work.
http://www.stickyj.com/wrist-lockets.html

They are nice and low key but on in the inside is a metal tab that can be engraved.
His says that he is my cherished property so I do not think they care too much what
you have them engrave on the inside.

my collar is from kaotic kreations, and is sterling silver - the hybrid. I have allergies to nickle, and  a lot of stainless steel has nickle in it.
I wore it every day for three years, and the two comments i got outside the lifestyle were , funnily enough, from men in their 70's asking me if it was a collar. Naturally i agreed wholeheartedly and laughed, and nothing more was said. This was at work, in front of my co-workers, and nothing more was ever said.

So if someone says something, follow right along, and laugh, and it will be forgotten.

I would question the motives of any Dominant who could not visualize that wearing a dog collar could be detrimental to my future employment.
This was my thought. Why would I want to be with someone that doesn't care if his actions are detrimental to my future?

I have a degree in psychology and agree with what has been said above. These people will be the ones giving you recommendations to get into the higher levels of schooling. They will be your colleagues in the future. Why take the chance that you'll be labeled as unacceptable? Especially considering how much money you're laying out.

i haven't encountered any problems wearing my collars in public. some people do a double-take and stare or strain their necks trying to read the inscription on the tag.  i have worn them at my ums' schools/field trips etc and i do tend to blend in the crowd most nights at my job.

I've been wearing one of theirs as my collar too, a gold filled wire pattern style. It is lovely, delicate looking and feminine. It is choker style and lightweight.
Most of all unless someone is familiar with collars it appears as a lovely piece of jewelry, nothing more.

Now I really really want to get a collar enhancer to add to it lol.

That is the type of collar I wear 24/7 as well. R got mine at www.ringofsteel.net. It is called the stealth collar.

The reason I recommended eternity instead of ringofsteel or dreamstrike is that they are thinner. Eternity collars are 5/16" instead of 3/8" which doesn't seem like it should make a big difference but it does. The other collars look massively thick by comparison. Eternity also doesn't have the lock to stick out of your hair or spin around at the wrong time.

my slave wears a choke chain dog collar i have padlocked through both loops and is not able to be removed. one time i did not remove the collar from the slave and it had problems with airport security and told them they would have to cut it off because master has the key. the slave wears this lock and collar 24/7. all part of being a slave, and owned property.

my slave works for the county and the collar never comes off, and has never been an issue. perhaps in a situation of having a slave in a professional job, i may choose a more discreet collar. but when it really comes down to it,,, you chose the commitment of being a slave, being an owned piece of property, now you want/expect your master to treat you otherwise? if your master put this collar on you, then i would assume that is your master wish!>?

my suggestion is, if this is a problem either figure out a way to dress accordingly, or move the fuck on. why should its master compromise anything, who is in control anyway? this should have all been negotiated ahead of time, way ahead of any collaring took place. perhaps you both need to review this situation

you are correct about your desire to be discreet in public...there are public collars that are beautiful and represent the union, and then of course there are play collars. i would think your D would understand the need for this, unless he wants you to be a stay at home slave/sub!

Here's another kind of discreet collar, I don't know anything about them but looks interesting: http://www.fetjeweller.com/slave-collars-bdsm-being-worn.html

Why not have a formal collar for at home and an every day collar for work?  Something like a necklace or a choker?  It's what I've done with My sub for some time now.

Totally 100% agree here

I have an assorment of leather and suede collars for at home but for work and family functions I have a necklace with a pendant that means something special to us both that I wear as my day collar.

If he insists on you doing something that will impact your professional earnings for the next 50 years, he ought to provide the difference for you now. So as long as he's willing to give you a million dollars upfront, then you should have no problem with compliance. I'm certain link65 does that for his, considering his insistence. After all, taking responsibility for his decisions is the most important thing for a master.

And if they aren't willing to take the responsibility for the problems arising from their decisions, they aren't people of integrity.

lol this was my thought.

But seriously, you accepted him - it is his choice... if you present the opinion in a respectful, well-thought out way, and he still demands you acquiesce to his desires - then you have the choice - do it, or walk.

From my perspective... dog collar? at work? dude. seriously.

I understand and completely  agree BUT if I lose my job due to the collar,  The dom damn well better be able to pay my salary until I find another job. Including and pay difference due to being under employed!  OtherFuckingWise it aint happening.

you didnt think about this ahead of time. you thought. "oh, wow, cooooiillll, how , so cool, i get to wear a collar, cool, i have a master now, neato."

if something as important as a lifetime commitment as a slave was so much a need. how did you neglect one of the most important displays of ownership as a topic of discussion with you master prior to him taking ownership? now you are on here crying about it, having other peoples input on something that is none of their business, and something you should obviously take up with your master.

Some of us do live a double life, with one being a professional life. No Master should impose any object or clothing choice or distinctiveness on his sub without their being agreement as to where and when it is to be worn. Likewise a Master/Mistress would not necessarily reveal all of the sins while in his/her professional life.

Agreed but he should understand the need for appropriate attire for a sub or slave that is also a proffesional.
