TheHeretic -> President Obama won't share the stage with Jesus (4/18/2009 4:28:41 PM)

I really can't believe nobody has posted this yet.  How much more "politics and religion" can we get?

President Obama won't share the stage with Jesus

Piss poor planning.  Worse yet, it kinda suggests we've got people making decisions who haven't much clue about how things really work in the execution.  Had whoever picked Georgetown as the location for this speech ever seen a picture of the stage?

Sanity -> RE: President Obama won't share the stage with Jesus (4/18/2009 4:40:07 PM)

I don't see this as a big deal, Rich. What if they had left the words, and then imagine the hay that would have been made with the pictures of the event. The kooks claiming he thinks he's Jesus would have never shut up...

Politesub53 -> RE: President Obama won't share the stage with Jesus (4/18/2009 4:45:35 PM)

I guess he is trying to show a seperation of Church and State, not a bad idea imho.

TheHeretic -> RE: President Obama won't share the stage with Jesus (4/18/2009 4:51:24 PM)

Right, Sanity.  So why pick a location where the question is even going to come up?

camille65 -> RE: President Obama won't share the stage with Jesus (4/18/2009 6:04:11 PM)

No matter what he does or where he speaks, there are going to be people bitching about it.
It's amazing.

Arpig -> RE: President Obama won't share the stage with Jesus (4/18/2009 7:31:01 PM)

Seems that way doesn't it Camille

If he didn't want to be * associated * with Jesus, then he shouldn't have spoken in a place where Jesus was prominant. Simple really. I have no issue with him not wanting religous symbols as a backdrop for his speeches, but I do have an issue with him or his administration choosing a place where religous symbols are present and expecting them to be covered up.

I find it offensive and the height of arrogance to expect any place that has a particular religious affiliation and demand they conceal their religious symbols. If one wants to keep separation of church and state separate, then don't chose a religously affiliated place to promote a political speech.

And let's be honest here folks, if this was Yeshiva University or the American Islamic University he would never have asked for religous symbols to be covered up. And if George Bush had done so at either of those Universities, you would be outraged. As would I.

So, you've personally asked him and his staff about this?  I'm impressed.  Can I have his phone number please?  I've got a few things I want to talk with him about as well.

maybemaybenot -> RE: President Obama won't share the stage with Jesus (4/19/2009 12:17:15 AM)

You see, BK I had no issue during his campaign when those photos of him in Muslim garb came out. He was wearing it out of respect for the religion of the place he was in, not as an endorsement of the religion, IMO. During his campaign he spoke at quite a few Jewish Temples, Jewish men were wearing Yamika's in the photos, a religious symbol.

You just don't go to a religious place/religiously affiliated place and ask or expect folks to cover up their religious identity. I think that is wrong. No matter what religion it is.

Bush didn't but his Attorney General did.

Remember when Ashcroft had the bare breast on the Spirit of Justice statue covered at the Justice department?

In Obama's case, my guess is he didn't want to be seen as endorsing Christianity over other faiths, he is the President for Jews and Muslims as well.

I think with Ashcroft he just doesn't like tits.

mike: No, not a precident. An example. I will go out an a limb and suggest it is highly likely that there were other religous symbols that were not covered up in those speeches, given that they were in a Temple.

Owner:
I didn't see it as any different than writing "Penna. Avenue", but you are probably right. I will await my warning or ban from Mod 11, if  that is considered personally identifying information.

See, it wouldn't have been a problem with McCain, as he is about 4 feet shorter.  The cameras would have just panned down and missed Jesus completely.

These sentences from the article caught my eye:

While the "IHS" directly behind where Obama spoke was covered over, CNSNews.com said the monogram was still visible in 26 other places in the hall during his speech. Those areas just weren't as prominent.

The Belief Blog talked with the Rev. Thomas Reese, a senior fellow at the Woodstock Institute at Georgetown University, who said he didn't think "this is motivated by theology, but by communications strategy."

That to me suggests that the IHS in question may have been covered not because it was a religious symbol but because it was a distracting visual element. If you look at the picture in the article, the IHS would have been directly behind Obama's head making it look like he had a halo. I'm sure folks would have had a field day with that!

Another thought: The folks at Georgetown obviously didn't feel their religious heritage was being dissed, or they would have refused the request.

Had my mod spanks over posting phone#s.

Links are the way to go.

If one recalls, the President was getting flack for having Roman/Greek columns in the background of a stage set.

I think this is one of the healthiest signs that things are getting back to normal here.

We can once again afford to waste energy over the frivolous and meaningless.

Crisis over![:D]

maybemaybenot -> RE: President Obama won't share the stage with Jesus (4/19/2009 8:06:10 AM)

yep, I do remember that and it was insulting to me as well. Disrespectful.

I agree with you, there is no reason for him to endorse one religion over another. Speaking at a religiously affilited place is not endorsing a religion, but if he or his staff see it that way, then they should chose another venue. Not ask any religious group to conceal their symbols.

During his campaign he spoke at many churches and synogues. He spoke from the pulpit at Martin Luther King's Church and the cross was prominant above his head. Matter of fact he spoke at many churches where the cross was big and bold above his head. He spoke at a UCC conference, where a cross could be seen. He may not have been president, but he was a political figure, representing people of all faiths in Illinois. Seems he was quite willing to " share the stage with Jesus " to get elected.

What a ridiculous thing to complain about.

Vendaval -> RE: President Obama won't share the stage with Jesus (4/19/2009 3:15:01 PM)

That is my take on the situation as well, dc.  When shooting a speech it is especially important to remove any background images that might distract from the speaker.  A pulpit is set on a stage and adding cameras, extra lighting and microphones to changes how the shot is set up.

Georgetown should have said hell no.
