When I had to do personal security work, and my employer required formal attire for me, I wore a clip on because of the strangulation thing.

quote:

My backward thinking, or more aptly put, thinking in reverse has brought me to another question. As usual I am not looking for the normal answer, I guess I am looking for an abnormal answer, so where do I go for that ?  Right here !

Now I can give you a reasonable hypothesis on why Women used to wear skirts and dresses, I have learned why pants are plural, all kinds of neat useless information, but this one defies me.

Formal attire, a tie. A tie is a surprisingly strong piece of cloth, cut and sewn to become the standard tie for businesswear, formal occasions and the like, but why ?

The way a standard tie is tied, someone can just walk up and strangle you with it, just hold the knot and pull the second "cord". This is something that bondage enthusiasts are taught not to do, to use something like that around a person's neck, yet millions of Men do it every day.

How did this tradition come about ? Who's bright idea was it to cause such vulnerability ?

I am really at a loss on this one.

Wonderful, Kitten!  You found opinion pieces (or straight reporting that someone else has an opinion) that match your own.  Lovely!

It could be worse.  I may be wearing something that symbolizes how the boss class has me by the throat, but at least I don't have to wear something that leaves my genitalia exposed to cold winds in the winter the way a dress or skirt would.

Yes. But don't forget the cufflinks and the double-cuffs. I've got a double-cuffs fetish *droooooooooooooooooooool*.

Where does the bow tie fit into this model, Kitten?  Perhaps men wear ties because they don't have cleavage to flash?

Why?  Because they have class, style, panache, they're hot!  Especially with a nice top hat, or fedora, or pork-pie hat.  There's just something strong and commanding about a well fitting suit on a person who carries themselves confidently.

I'm not really concerned where the silly tradition (or whatever it is) came from, the whole concept seems silly to me & certainly not hot, not in the stylish sense. I have worn one a few times in my life, generally during an event I didn't care to be at in the first place. I have worked in an office environment before and no, I didn't wear a damned tie (can we say nonconformist...lol?). At this point in time, I don't think I even own one. Maybe I just don't need a pointer (shrugs).

Hehe, fair enough.  I also think that my pet looks good in pink satin girls underthings, and these cute pink and blue shorts and cami top.  I suppose it's just a matter of taste.  Some people prefer the casual look of jeans or shorts and a t-shirt, some like the sagger look, which I think is just preposterous.  Who's to say? :)

I think what's even more fascinating is how men's hats came about...but equally as interesting....how they disappeared as a style accessory so abruptly in the early 60's, as if by a light switch.

Couldn't rock and roll with a hat on. Then the long hair got in the way.

Collars and cuffs were both removable, so they could be readily cleaned instead of cleaning the whole jacket.  The cuff thing came in handy when working in the pen-and-ink world.

Arp, the collar ? Think of that.

Looki, I've heard that people lose alot of body heat through the head. That might explain the hats. I myself never wear hats, and have only worn a tie about three times in my life.

Now the collar might be explainable for warmth in the winter, and something to tie it on would follow. Worth a thought, but I don't think it answers the question......

How did it become such a universal tradition ? Of what is it a symbol if not vulnerability ? Or is it a vulnerability planned to exude an air of strength, as in "Go ahead MF and try it". ?

Several years ago, rush Limbaugh had his own tie line. They were very colorful and looked great. They were also silk and not cheap...

Ties, because cod pieces do not show unless the man is wearing tights!

The tie- is a symbolic submission to the corporation.  Men wearing suits is odd.  Most men are warmer body temp then woman. So to dress layers in summer makes no sense.  or if males and females arent dressed for the same temp.

This topic was on a vid I heard recently- I dont recall where.

The old pics of George Washington and such are so gay looking.   Ruffles and died hair.

Today tho we have morphed from neck ties to monsanto, CODEX, and our money being robbed from us in broad day light.\\\

Where do you get these things from, Hunky? Women are in fact better at conserving the heat, because of their more evenly distributed fat layer: this allows us to pull the blood back to our principle organs when needed, which drags it away from our hands and feet. We're warm, tropical little things, we are. Guys are big snow oafs, on the other hand. So there goes your theory: POUF.

Speaking of which, guys: please don't do polyester ties, I don't care how kinkily good it sounds. Silk threads only. Thank you.

A man removing his tie makes me go melty. The frisson of silk against cotton, the whisper of fabric as his hand wraps around one end and tugs it free.
Yes please. A man in a tie is a very good thing.
Even a jaunty bow tie can be sexy!

For a fun tie I prefer Carlos Santanas products.

I agree. The more there is to take off, the more tantalising it is. This is also why short-sighted men can be so sexy: ever noticed how enticing it is to watch a good-looking man slide off a pair of expensive glasses from his nose? Oh my gawwwwwd *MOAN*.

I may be in a funny mood today, but it's possible that camille hit the nail on the head. Taking the tie off, like engaging on one's freedom, has sexual appeal. That is tripped out, but it could make sense, especially on this planet.

Now you see why I come here ? Google would never have these kinds of answers.

Ties in an office have a Darwinian aspect.  Hand a moron a stack of files to shred and see what happens to the tie.    It's either culling the herd or quicker than a "pink slip".
