Just curious......for all you Dom/Masters out there. Do you just want a sub/slave that serves you? Offers her body to you...or you take it...when you want too.
Doesn't challenge you mentally? Dumb's down so you can feel superior? Receives only what your willing to give her without question?
Edith.....the ultimate subby~! Gets ARCHIE his beer.....does everything in the house...get's called Dingbat......and face it appears to be quite stupid. But she adores and loves her Archie........

Everyone is different.

I think what matters is making a conscious choice out of personal fulfillment.

Never looked at that show in those terms but I believe she was. Or at the very least take a look at the shows production period, women in general were more subserviant to their husbands by culture.

A slave to me is just that a slave. She is there to do my bidding with no questions. I do not need one to dumb down make me "feel" superior. In this instance it is the natural progression of the relationship. Her existence to serve and mine to be the one in control. It makes each feel they are in their place of comfort.

There is a difference between a submissive a slave and a brain dead person. "Edith" was in my opinion a female who felt her role was to serve, weather she was submissive or slave is totally up for ones own opinion as to those definitions.
My first wife was "brain dead" this is not to mean an insult to her its just that she was the type who would blindly do whatever I or anyone else told her to do without and self initiative or desires. She would be to some the perfect slave. I quickly ( over a few yrs) found that I as a person needed a lot more then just blind obediance. "In my opinion" She and Edith had a lot in common.
A submissive chooses how and when to give "self" they have safewords and limits.
A slave has given all those options to their Master to control. They have no safewords or limits just those that the care and concern of their Master decides for them.
Not everyone can or should be a submissive or even a slave, I am very honored to own such a slave and she is far from the "Edith" mold or that of my first wife so long ago. She has her opinions, thoughts and ideas and I encourage those in her.

I don't think Edit was much of a sub at all. Archie was non-too-bright and her 'dingbatness' offset his own.

That said, I crave successful intelligent women, not so much for confrontational challenge, but because I enjoy the interplay of minds… and those occasions when she's reduced to a quivering puddle of goo.

Edith is definitely a submissive personality but "ultimate" is a value judgement. Some people find doormats appealing and some prefer the incurrably rebellious (or something between the two).

It's matter of taste.

Nor was Edith an "ultimate" sub in the sense of being a slave (if you take slavery as one polar extreme of the domination - submission continuum). She had her limits and enforced them, honesty being an important one. In one episode she even slapped Archie when he was caught gambling after he had promised not to.

Z.

mmmmmmm,....................now that might have gotten her a good spanking that night~!
I really started this thread on a light note....but wow...it's gotten some heavier responses then I thought. Thinking back to those days of 70's sitcoms.....all the women were subservient, pretty much......with some exceptions like "Maude",.....but the general influence as a child watching them was that the women was the homemaker, mother, wife. It's certainly not like that today.
Take Desperate Housewives. One of the husbands was into D/S and wanted his wife to spank him~!
Also I think to some extent......the supposed, self titled Dominants today...would gladly submit if...........for example.........
Angelina Jole or Pamela Anderson was sitting in the barka lounger.....and said....dear get me a beer and I'll think of blowing you later.

This brings up an interesting comment or thought about how "Hollywood" and the powers behind it have chaped our perceptions of daily life.
Shows like All in the Family, Sanford and Son etc. created steriotypes that were in reality not correct. But was it possably that very influance that wanted "us" to go back to the rules or the 1950s when "Edith" was the norm, and her role was exactly that. Or was the intent just the opposite to exagurate the "norm" and create change.
I am not intending this topic to be shifted to the "political" side. But it does bring up some interesting thought as to the power of the "media" and its ability to create change.

The ability to have one "news" article about "BDSM" that allows so many people to get the totally wrong idea of what is "our" reality.

Retro tends to go in every other decade. The 70s spawned a lot of nostalgia for the 50s ideals. The late 90s spawned a lot of 70s nostalgia. It's long enough for people to forget the bad and still want their version of the good after they've lived awhile.

I don't think shows like All in the Family were retro or nostalgic (which means 'old pain' BTW). They were deeply critical of the stereotypes they portrayed. The English comedies that spawned All in the Family (Til Death Us Do Part) and Sanford and Son (Steptoe and Son), were far more savage caricatures. But the intent was the same and I don’t think that included embracing bigotry in a warm fuzzy, welcome-home hug.

NAH! Meathead - was his boy ;)

When I was a little girl, I had a huge crush on "I Dream Of Jeannie's" handsome Major Nelson. Beautiful girl wore a slinky, sheer, sexy costume all the time. Slave magically appeared in a misty pink haze when he 'released' her from her exotic Arabian bottle(cage). For His pleasure; she 'blinked' to matererialize his every desire. She would do anything to serve. HE set the limits!
PLUS called him MASTER, always, always, always!

Dear "I Love Lucy" gets punished when oh so naughty. Dom hubby Ricky Riccardo takes down sassy redhead , tosses her over the knee and spanks subby brat Lucy. Poor naughty girl: cries like a baby! Waaaaa!

Hmmn. Check out Nick. Have times changed?

Wow, aren't we all dating ourselves now? Meathead, now he was the subby, not Edith, he just happened to be more opionated, but still, he always backed down to Archie.

I dream of Jeannie.....Wow, that sexy little outfit and the hair pulled back in a pony tail, ready to grant any wish.

Oooh, Ooooh, Oooh, Fastlane jumps up and down with joy as he imagines what his next play scene will detail.......

Peace, Kevin

Secret, I think Lily ruled the roost. She was regal, queenly, Gothically lovely. Grandpa taught her his special magic, ya know?

Fastlane: I too feared we were dating ourselves ( the horror!) , but these shows ran in syndication for years. They were on reruns during the day. Now Nick at night is exposing new generations to....? <evil laugh>
