I was so surprised by the tidbit of information I read regarding the State of the Union address this evening! I never expected Bush (defeated in his desire to drill for oil in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge--a campaign I worked on in October) to express any desire to assist our environment. While I'm sure his advisors wrote the speech for him, I still happened to enjoy this small amount of positivity:

To change how we power our homes and offices, we will invest more in zero-emission coal-fired plants; revolutionary solar and wind technologies; and clean, safe nuclear energy.

We must also change how we power our automobiles. We will increase our research in better batteries for hybrid and electric cars, and in pollution-free cars that run on hydrogen. We will also fund additional research in cutting-edge methods of producing ethanol, not just from corn but from wood chips, stalks, or switch grass. Our goal is to make this new kind of ethanol practical and competitive within six years. Breakthroughs on this and other new technologies will help us reach another great goal: to replace more than 75 percent of our oil imports from the Middle East by 2025.

His energy plan is great. Its a day late and a dollar short. This should have happened back in the 70's when the gas crisis hit. If what he says happens... wonderful. I have learned though that W only lies when his mouth is open.

I was going to say pretty much the same thing. Georgie Porgie has long touted these great new iniatives and funding increases to various programs that turned out to be just smoke and mirrors. They are constantly calling what is effectively DECREASES in important environmental programs "increases" because of the way they fix the numbers. For example... they could have cut funding for these programs three years ago by 63%, so increasing it 22% doesn't even begin to come close to where it was (this is standard practice for this administration, cut funding in off years when no one is paying attention and then raise it in election years to claim your superiority).

Goodie on him for offering it. A better program would be to simply underwrite the price of every hybrid sold in America so they cost less them comparable gasoline powered models instead of more. Money is a huge incentive that we all love in this country, and by driving buying power into hybrids you mold the marketplace and allow free enterprise to reign by convincing businesses to invest more in this technology. And tie the incentive to mpg, the higher it is the more the citizen gets in a DIRECT payback (not one of those silly tax deductions that hardly do anything to cut your tax bill... give them cold, hard cash like they do all those rich energy companies to get them to drill places).

And the moment they hit their first *inevitable* snag with new environment-friendly energy sources, the Republicans will immediately go back to drilling for oil in conservation areas.

This time their excuse to Democrats and liberals will be "What? You want us to go back to the middle east for oil?"

These people just keep piling on the bullshit.

And anyone can attend the speech as long as you don't wear an "offensive" t-shirt even if everyone has seen it as you came in apparently.

This pisses me off to no end.

This is, of course, only her side of the issue, and I'm sorry if this offends some people here but I think this is an example of how our basic rights can be trampled very easily if we are not careful.

Bush is a great President! As good Americans all of you should give him your full support.

The nation's economy is in an upswing and the people are more hopeful than ever. Bush has been absolutely pivotal in maintaining relations with international markets in Asia and South America. By offshoring lesser paying jobs Bush has freed up our own economy to refocus on better paying more highly skilled labor positions for our own people. Critical tax cuts have been implemented so that the wealthy and corporations can spend more money on the kinds of reinvestments that make the economy thrive. Not only has he stood up to domestic terrorism but he has taken the fight right back to the terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan. With an eye to preserving liberty where possible, Bush has created a second shadow government that we can rely on in the case of a national emergency. By creating a nationally linked database system Bush has made anti-terrorist investigations a snap. Coming from the conservationist party, Bush has made sure that tapping our nation's natural resources is done in the most careful, least ecosystem invasive manner possible. Getting at those oil reserves is going to lessen our dependence on foreign sources and create more jobs for Americans in geographic areas that need them. I'd say things are looking great and getting better all the time.

I can't remember ever feeling so happy about the direction of the nation's politics. People, the State of the Union is strong!

I am not an "American", but I do have a good understanding of the principles on which the US was founded, and my understanding of it leads me to believe just the opposite...as good Americans, all of you should follow your concienses and speak your minds, be that pro or con on any given issue.
Slavish (no insult intended to any of the wonderful slaves on CM) devotion to "The Leader" never has and never will lead to any good.

Now I know this is sarcasm. Bush would drill for oil through Teddy Roosevelt's head on Mt. Rushmore if he thought it would make his business partners happy. The only thing that will lessen our dependence on foreign oil is to lessen our dependence on oil..period.

Personally, I'm disgusted with the state of the union...the direction we have taken...and how little people seem to care about what is going on in their own country.

Strange how hard it is to satirize the right-wing, even when you attempt to sound nutty it just comes across as if you were playing it straight. And of course, there is no left proper - The Dems are just Rethugs-Lite.

She has an excellent case. The core case law in this case is a unanimous decision by the 1971 Supreme Court in Cohen v California wherein the defendant was arrested for wearing a t-shirt reading "Fuck the Draft."

Of course, this took place before 9/11 and so, as the president keeps telling us, it was in a different world.

If I wanted to attend the speech, I wouldn't be stupid enough to wear a Tshirt or become enough of a heckler to get myself thrown out.

Unless, of course, I was addicted to the spotlight and WANTED to see myself get escorted out on National Television.

Then, of course, I'd wear flaming Tshirts and act like an ass until I had security guards and cameramen swarming Me like flies.

Nothing like a predictable press, or the even more predictable public who will react just as tammyjo has.

I recognize a publicity stunt when I see one.
