Was just wondering... would you like to see the BDSM scene gain widespread social acceptance or do you like that it is somewhat taboo?

SirKenin -> RE: comming out (2/1/2006 7:01:14 PM)

No matter which direction it moves in, it will not stop Me from being who I am and living as I do... So really I do not care. Thanks.

Arpig -> RE: comming out (2/1/2006 7:10:00 PM)

GASP!!! kenin and I gree 100% on something....pretty unusual [:D]
To be honest, the "taboo" nature of it has little to do with its appeal to me, it is something I feel within me, and being a longtime non-conformist, what the rest of the world feels/thinks about it is of no interest to me.

Well, I don't see it as being taboo. It's just another part of my life.

MissAli -> RE: comming out (2/1/2006 9:38:34 PM)

You mean, I'm NOT normal?!?! No wonder my parents don't speak to me! Ahhhh, it's starting to make sense....

Well, seriously, I don't really care so long as support and love are still infused within our community itself.

naughtynick -> RE: comming out (2/1/2006 9:49:37 PM)

I just want it to always remain discreet. There are some people who you want to share your fantasies with and there are other people who you don't.

I dont see it as taboo either. Heck, sometimes it seems like one of the most normal things in my life. Im talking about the publics view of things in this ultra politically correct age

Well... I'd like to see it on McDonald's menu... "Yeah, I'll have a Big Mac, order of fries, a large coke and a slut -- to go!" [:D] hee hee hee

But seriously, I would venture a guess that it could never be "mainstream", as it flies in the face of "social progress", as they say.

Just imagine what the National Organization for Women (NOW) would think of a girl on a leash?!!

Oh dear. When I read

I saw this...

It must be late for me. Or maybe it was freudian.

*sniff*

naughtynick -> RE: comming out (2/1/2006 10:05:19 PM)

It depends what type of things that are involved with the acceptance. I only tell people who are involved with BDSM about my fantasies. Many people out there would not accept me as a person because of it.

Just like the people who are into playing with animals, toilet games, or something that is really extreme. They are the type of things that can't be accepted in society. I personally have nothing against a person who does this but societies are very judgmental on these types of behaviour.

IronBear -> RE: comming out (2/1/2006 10:10:41 PM)

If, by cxomming out you seek public acceptance by the large unwashed and illinformed general public, then you may as well look at having a BDSM marde gras and accept the open season directed at you at home, at work and socially from all those right wing wankers who would have you burned at the stake. As long as you are prepared to accept the persecution by a variety of groups and areas on society as have the Pagans and Gay communities, then go for it.

I wish it were less taboo and less of an evil ax to be wielded at people who have something to lose (like professions and unmentionables), otherwise, I don't much care since it's mostly about how I live my life in my home. M

It's something I wore this past weekend, and since it was on digital media already, I changed from the old picture. M

Well said IB

I care as little about what society in general thinks of me because of D/s as I do about what they think of me as pagan.

If they don't like it.... tough, their problem not mine!

I don't really care very much what most people think about BDSM, but I must admit that I like being part of a somewhat secret minority. When I am with people who don't fully know me, I enjoy having a secret. It's not a big deal, but a little smile now and then.

Isara -> RE: comming out (2/2/2006 4:52:10 AM)

While I certainly don't see what I do as 'taboo' I do understand that I am always going to have to be especially discreet with certain people in my life, especially my father and brothers.

They wouldn't understand my choices, and while it might sound simplistic to some to so suddenly dismiss the thought of telling them, I understand their value systems, and while I was raised with the same ones as they were, in the same environment even, my take of it was always different.

As it stands, we love eachother, and get on, with only the barest of disagreements, my lovers have always been very discreet, and have always made sure never to do anything to unsettle the apple cart and for that I'm very grateful.

If however, I came out now? I'd doubtless lose my job, and my ability to work with children. I know I am a responsible adult, who would never hurt a child, an abused woman, or vulnrable client, male or female I was working with, but society wouldn't see it that way.

I'm comforted by the knowledge that only a few years ago, Paganism, Wicca and other things non-mainstream such as being homosexual were clandestine and "wicked" things. It will only be a matter of time, a prominant film star for instance "coming out" etc and suddenly it'll be "cool" or what have you. *wry grin*

So, for now?

I'm content to lurk in the shadows. :)

I would like to have it be a boring thing that makes it as normal to bring up "My owner and his slave" as easily as other people bring up "my husband and his sister."

Because for me, that's exactly what it is and I don't think it should be anything else. It's a boring normal life choice just like anyone else's. I don't enjoy this because others think it's freaky, I enjoy it because *I* am oriented for it. That won't change no matter who likes it or doesn't.

Ahh, but see...for myself...I could care less how the public viewed me, or the way I lived. I have always held that if asked...I tell...they either accept it...or to quote my favorite quote...they can go fuck themselves

/shrug

The public and their narrowminded approach does not rule my life.
