An apophthegm (sometimes written "apothegm") is more like a motto or bon mot. It's not really a story. "Contumacious" is a very disdainful way of saying "disobedient." It's in the realm of "impertinent, unruly." Next word..."contumelious" Edited to add: "covet" and "coven" are not related. I didn't think they were, so I looked it up. (So I'm not going to pretend that I knew what follows.) "Covet" comes from Old French "coveiter," which reflects a Latin root related to "cupiditas," meaning "desire." "Coven" is actually related to "convent" (of all words); it's from Latin "convenire," meaning "to come together." "Covinous" is just the adjective from "coven." A "coven" is a group of people who get together for nefarious, conspiratorial purposes--as in a "witch's coven." "Covinous" describes such people and the things they do. quote:
