When Jesse James got married, they took a wedding photo. On one side were the in-laws, on the other side were the outlaws.

The outlaws were the agnates, the in-laws were the affines.

But "covinous" doesn't really mean "dishonest." It's more in the direction of "conspiratorial." It's related to "coven."

I need to ask LAM...you said covinous was related to coven? I am at a loss here as to see how? You are right about the definition leaning towards collusive behavior, but how would that sit side by side with coven?

Hmmm, I think I know, but I would have to look up the early definitions for coven. NM, I think I know where it comes from.

mnottertail -> RE: Word Fight (3/17/2006 4:42:58 PM)

cove, to hold or keep inward.

Coven
Covet

contumacious (since there seems to be a hole)

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (3/17/2006 4:56:09 PM)

An apophthegm (sometimes written "apothegm") is more like a motto or bon mot. It's not really a story.

"Contumacious" is a very disdainful way of saying "disobedient." It's in the realm of "impertinent, unruly."

Next word..."contumelious"

Edited to add: "covet" and "coven" are not related. I didn't think they were, so I looked it up. (So I'm not going to pretend that I knew what follows.) "Covet" comes from Old French "coveiter," which reflects a Latin root related to "cupiditas," meaning "desire." "Coven" is actually related to "convent" (of all words); it's from Latin "convenire," meaning "to come together." "Covinous" is just the adjective from "coven." A "coven" is a group of people who get together for nefarious, conspiratorial purposes--as in a "witch's coven." "Covinous" describes such people and the things they do.

It is 'cause of guys like you, Lam, that I flunked latin.....I coulda bullshitted my way thru that, had I not been caught. I once made an ass out of myself (not the first or last) by claiming vacuous had two u's as in vacuum. I think you were there; Desert Rat gave me a withering explication.

I..........on the other hand would claim to be impudent rather than contumelious since I am to immature from a sociologial standpoint to carry the advanced concepts of arrogance or disdain to such a ephemeral level as to breach my conciousness.

I still tell fart jokes to my daughter for fucks sake.

(Gawd, I loved the deviousness and <what's the word?. reach with the Nantucket thing..........You awe me, often.
So if you agree with my definition, then next word
ephemeral

or back to
contumelious.......

I stand on the shoulders of giants as Newton did.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (3/17/2006 5:24:38 PM)

"Ephemeral" is probably my favorite word of all. (Well, that and "eleemosynary," because no one knows what that one means, and I'm not sure there are too many other words that start with three out of four e's AND have two y's as vowels.) You have not enjoyed ANYTHING until you appreciate that it will not last.

For the next one, we may as well do "eleemosynary."

mnottertail -> RE: Word Fight (3/17/2006 6:57:44 PM)

I don't remember where I first saw that word, but I would dolefully beg a pass on it, seems as though you are gratuitously inviting something.

That fucker I looked up a long time ago, and happen to remember.........

Oh, joy, rapture, I have a brain.......(the Scarecrow in Oz)

but you neither required or intimated an exegesis, or am I mistaken?

Ron

candystripper -> RE: Word Fight (3/17/2006 9:32:03 PM)

Gawd You guys are a pain.

i love "ephemeral"; means "transitiory"

"eleemosynary" means "supported by charity".

Because You gave up, "heelim" means "to humble".

New word:

"sottisier"

candystripper

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (3/17/2006 9:38:59 PM)

"Eleemosynary" isn't limited to "supported by charity"; it just means "of or pertaining to alms."

"Heelim" isn't in OED. Are you sure you've spelled it right?

I didn't know "sottisier," so I looked it up. Nice word. I won't say what it means in case someone knows it. But I'll give a big hint: it's related to "sottise."

candystripper -> RE: Word Fight (3/17/2006 9:50:01 PM)

A compliment from Lam! On Word Fight! O, be still my heart!

You make this damned game so hard., LOL.

Brings to mind that Spring is but a few days away. Planting the garden with some phanerogams will soon be a weekend chore. I have some seeds I harvested from last years crop.

Reviewing the recent series of posts, I can see that collarme's members have protean talents.

mnottertail -> RE: Word Fight (3/19/2006 8:16:28 AM)

I collect some of those, a pot to spit in

Yes I double checked it is right, I thought I might have written a pot to piss in, that would be a chamber pot.

LOLOL,
Ron

mnottertail -> RE: Word Fight (3/19/2006 8:37:58 AM)

Ignore the idiot behind the screen.......that was so yesterday, I didn't even see that I wasn't on the right page..........

Protean....

Many and varied...

prehensile

Ron

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (3/19/2006 8:52:44 AM)

"Protean" doesn't exactly mean many and varied. It comes from Proteus (so it's an eponym, to use another word we did recently), a Greek god who could change his shape at will. So "protean" is something versatile that can function in a variety of environments, or something that can change its morphology as needed. Chameleons are protean.

I'm sure we did "prehensile" when we were doing synonyms of "rapacious." It means having the capacity to grab (like an elephant's prehensile trunk); sometimes it's used neutrally, but often pejoratively.

OK, next one...frondescent

candystripper -> RE: Word Fight (3/19/2006 12:21:22 PM)

guessing here; "frondescent" means "leaf covered"?

candystripper

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (3/19/2006 5:54:31 PM)

Close...it means "starting to grow leaves." An apt word for spring, I thought.

Your turn, pink.

candystripper -> RE: Word Fight (3/19/2006 6:26:50 PM)

o pretty word.

next one:

"dystopia"

candystripper

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (3/19/2006 6:36:43 PM)

That would be the opposite of "utopia."

Next one...rebarbative
