Naiad...sorry, should have put this one in the last post

murmur -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 1:33:57 PM)

Historically, bandit25, congrats you got it [:D]

it can be a quebecer swearword as well[;)]

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 1:40:38 PM)

Are you serious?  A swearword?  ROFLMAO

murmur -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 1:47:33 PM)

lol yup
part of our religious Christians (or would that be catholic?) traditions can and are used as swearwords here in Quebec...
as in :
Calisse = the bowl where the blood of Jesus Christ was poured in
Tabarnak = another kind of spelling...yet, the same basic meaning
Criss = as in Christ (Jesus Christ)
Osti (or Esti) = the substitut of the *body* of Jesus Christ that we get to eat at each ceremony

Those are the more populars [:D]

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 1:52:52 PM)

You Canadians...such characters!

murmur -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 1:54:59 PM)

*GRINS*
indeed[:D]

*curtseys*

alright bandit25...your turn? [;)]

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 1:56:29 PM)

Naiad

AngelaK -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 1:57:45 PM)

Naiad is a forest spirit.

Liriope.

murmur -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 2:01:07 PM)

Liriope is a kind of savage plant, you can find them often along the roads or in savage fields.

Até.

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 2:05:16 PM)

Not quite...naiad is a water nymph.  Unless it is also a forest spirit?  LAM?

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 2:41:27 PM)

I always thought it was a water nymph also. I could be wrong though [&:]

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 2:56:48 PM)

I'm pretty sure that's correct Tikkiee.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 3:19:10 PM)

A "naiad" is a water nymph.  A wood nymph is a "dryad" (or sometimes they use the word "sylph").

Whose turn is it?

Edited to add...Oh, Ate, the goddess of infatuation.

Next one...have we done "larmoyant" yet?

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 3:32:11 PM)

Tearful

galilee

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 3:33:26 PM)

Hmm, Galilee is a place.  Does it mean something else?

TxBadMan -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 3:37:08 PM)

A chapel

"Azygos"

edited to add:
I was too slow, sorry.

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 3:45:48 PM)

Chris is right...a chapel...no clue on his tho.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 4:44:29 PM)

It has to be from the same root as "zygote."  "Zygos" means "yoked," so "azygos" must mean "not yoked."  I guess it's something that's free, not bonded to anything else?

I found "not being one of a pair"

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/23/2006 4:50:43 PM)

Yeah, I just looked it up.  I was close.

"peculation"
