An "anagnost" is specifically a cleric who reads things aloud in the Orthodox Church (like a lector or prelector in the Roman Catholic Church).  The etymology is revealing: the anagnostes is the person who does anagignoskein, or "making things known" by reading them aloud.

Ok, I'll concede that one. I looked it up [8D]

As for Roble; hint:   It's a noun, and native to California.

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/24/2006 4:34:21 PM)

roble is a type of wood, but I don't know if it's native to California

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (4/24/2006 6:05:43 PM)

Lol I'll give it to you Bandit.
Roble is an oak tree that is specifically native to California.

You're up [:D]

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/24/2006 6:07:47 PM)

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/24/2006 6:17:38 PM)

Damn.  I knew that one was too easy.  Ok, in Middle English "thew" meant a virtue or strength.

Tenesmic

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (4/24/2006 6:27:36 PM)

Tenesmic

relating to spasms of the anal sphincter

"Picayune"

Here's another easy one

"Daboia"

there is one definition that I am thinking of, but it can also mean something else entirely.

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/24/2006 7:05:41 PM)

Easy?  I guess I better go look up that word (easy).  Nope, no clue,,,looked it up.  A poisonous snake.  You get to go again.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/24/2006 7:35:58 PM)

"Maenad" is related to "mania," actually.

I don't know "daboia."

Looked this one up because I don't know it.  "Tenesmic" means "afflicted with tenesmus," which is basically when you can't shit or piss.

Daboia is a poisonous snake.

Another definition for it, though not widely known is LURKER

I thought LAM might get a kick out of that one lol.

chantrea -> RE: Word Fight (4/24/2006 7:42:25 PM)

It's Welsh, but I am not 100% sure of the translation. Let me think on this one lol.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/24/2006 7:50:23 PM)

It means "pupil" (looks like it HAS to be borrowed from discipulus), but I thought we were conducting the game in English...

Next one..."先派"

Edited to add...My God, CM accepts Chinese now!  Yay!

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (4/24/2006 7:54:29 PM)

LMAO

Well darn it, I guess that means I had better learn Chinese [&:] I know a smattering of Latin, but my ability to translate is pretty pitiful.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/24/2006 8:00:39 PM)

OK, back to English.

"rhedarious"

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/25/2006 3:43:44 AM)

I don't think any of us know this one LAM.

I am not sure of the exact definition but I know it has something to do with carriages. Give me some time, I'll figure it out.
