Edited to add: Anyone have a reference for the claim that Shakespeare's vocabulary is 2.5 times the size of OED? I don't think that can be true. I own a complete concordance to Shakespeare, and it's not nearly as large as OED. Also, anything that's in Shakespeare (including clauses ending with prepositions) is English in my book. I don't have an actual reference for online that could prove or disprove the claim. However, I do know that it can not be as large as OED. I have an up to date reference guide to Shakespearean/Elizabethan vocabulary, and though it is large, it is no where near as large as the OED. ( I also own a complete Etymology reference guide, also up to date. And by up to date, I mean 2005-2006)
