Yep, it's removal of part of a tooth root...I've had a LOT of dentistry work done.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (5/1/2006 10:11:36 PM)

Another example of doctors getting creative with language then.

Have we done "diuturnal" yet?

TolerableCruelty -> RE: Word Fight (5/2/2006 2:28:26 AM)

Long lasting, or lasting an eternity.

vallate

mnottertail -> RE: Word Fight (5/2/2006 1:00:24 PM)

similar to the word valence  (if you see connections in roots)

a saucer shaped depression or covering

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (5/2/2006 5:21:18 PM)

"Vallate" is definitely not related to "valence" (which is from Latin valentia, from the verb valere, "to be hale"), nor is it likely to be related to "valance" (which is probably from Old French avaler, "to descend").  Instead, it's from Latin vallare, meaning "to surround with a rampart."

The only related English word I'm aware of is "circumvallate," which means largely the same thing as "vallate" (but can also be used as a verb).

Anyway, it's your turn, Ron.

can i have Ron's turn?

supraventriculartachycardia

mnottertail -> RE: Word Fight (5/4/2006 7:28:41 AM)

ontopheartchamberspeedheart.

an irregular heartbeat? no that would be arythmia.......

Something with the top ventricular side of the heart, and recurring beat, I think.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (5/4/2006 8:55:59 AM)

Almost.  "Tachycardia" is when your hear beats too fast.  And "supraventricular" means "above the ventricle," not "the top ventricle."  My Dad had it.

BUT

"Supraventricular tachycardia" is TWO words, not one.

Edited to add: Next one is "oenomel."

Takethiswaltz -> RE: Word Fight (5/4/2006 9:46:37 AM)

right, supraventricular is when it originates above the ventricles.
which means the tachycardia is originating in the atria.
ok, i give, technically it's 2 words but at work its often written as one.

Takethiswaltz -> RE: Word Fight (5/4/2006 9:21:31 PM)

oenomel....

I have no idea.[:o]

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (5/8/2006 3:50:05 AM)
