Sorry Tikkiee, but I have a great word...I'm reading Ahba's Wife...

incarnadine

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/28/2006 6:00:41 PM)

That's what I get for not proofreading...Ahab's Wife

"pyxis"

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/28/2006 8:59:07 PM)

Pyxis is a constellation and in Greek it means "box."  If it has another meaning in English, I don't know it.

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/29/2006 12:42:47 AM)

Oh great.  I can't sleep and there's no word.

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (4/29/2006 5:10:40 AM)

Nope, that was it LAM. Your turn [:)]

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/29/2006 2:59:57 PM)

"preconcertion"

mathiasdomm -> RE: Word Fight (4/29/2006 5:30:32 PM)

I think it would be "the act of agreeing"

"copasetic"- (my favorite song)

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/29/2006 5:43:06 PM)

That's slang.  Am I the only person who thinks we should eliminate slang words?  If everyone else wants to include them, it's OK with me, but my vote would be no.

Edited to add: Anyway, on that note, the next word is "argot."

LMAO thats the way a certain group of people talk

"Kaapenaar"

On a side note, I agree. Let's leave slang out of it :)

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/29/2006 9:58:22 PM)

Didn't know "kaapenaar," and I can't imagine too many people know it outside of Africa, but it's in OED.

I guess you go again, unless someone knows "kaapenaar."

mathiasdomm -> RE: Word Fight (4/29/2006 10:22:47 PM)

I never knew that word was slang, but I checked it out and you guys are right.  Origin undeterminable, says the American Heritage Dictionary.  I couldn't find it in the OED, but mine's old.

I think kaapenaar is somebody from the South African coast. It might be a South African ethnic group, but I'm not sure. I had actually never heard the word before last night, but I had dinner with some African history scholars and they used the term.  I'm inferring the definition I'm putting here. Hell yeah human rights conferences.

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/30/2006 4:14:13 AM)

I agree.  Let's leave out slang.

Kaapenaar is a South African fish [8D]

"gehenna"

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/30/2006 10:57:21 AM)

"Kaapenaar" also refers to someone who lives in Cape Town.

Gehenna is a place like hell.

Next one..."comfrey"
