That one I know.  "Iatrogenic" means "caused in the process of trying to cure someone."  If the doctor fucks up your treatment and causes a staph infection, for example, the infection is called "iatrogenic."

There are a few words with the "iatro-" root, but not many.

Next one ... "spicant"

"falchion"

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (6/8/2006 9:40:23 PM)

Isn't that a kind of dagger or short sword?

Dustyn -> RE: Word Fight (6/8/2006 11:40:16 PM)

A falchion is a slightly curved blade of Middle Eastern influence, similar to a tulwar, but generally thicker... think machete with a weight problem...

What is a snickersnee?

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (6/8/2006 11:55:25 PM)

Gilbert & Sullivan made that one famous.  It's the blade that Ko-Ko uses to execute criminals.  I think it just refers to a knife used in fighting.

Next one ... "lucifee"

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (6/9/2006 6:39:33 AM)

Isn't that a cat?

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (6/9/2006 8:26:22 AM)

A lynx.

Your turn.

pinkee -> RE: Word Fight (6/9/2006 8:32:15 AM)

All i got was a few folktales using thr word "lucifee" as a proper name for a cat.

Next word:

"sectionalism"

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (6/9/2006 8:38:43 AM)

"Lucifee" is an American corruption of "loup cervier," which is the Canada lynx.  I don't know of any stories that use the word as a name for a cat, but it would be humorous.

"Sectionalism" is close to "sectarianism": being part of a particular section, instead of adopting the viewpoint of the whole.

Next one ... "cuttoo"

I believe that is a covering used on wagon wheels...it covers the axle. I think? LOL

"ecbatic"

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (6/9/2006 9:10:36 AM)

It's a grammatical term, the opposite of "telic."  And now I'm going to turn the tables.  What language does it (originally) apply to?  In other words, it's sometimes used now in discussions of English grammar too, but it's borrowed from the grammar of which language?

(You're more likely to get me with obscure scientific terms than obscure grammatical ones.)

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (6/9/2006 10:30:40 AM)

Isn't it Aramic?

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (6/9/2006 10:33:09 AM)

Greek.

Anyway, an "ecbatic" complement indicates an action that was completed of its own accord, as opposed to a "telic" complement, which indicates an action that was intended.

"I farted, and then he passed out"--ecbatic

"I farted in order to make him pass out"--telic

Your turn.

LOL sorry, that word was in response to your 'you can get me with science words'

It is any secondary compound produced by plants as part of a defense mechanism

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (6/9/2006 3:02:22 PM)

All right, you get to go again.

Told ya you'd have a better chance of stumping me with science words.  Especially stuff like biochemistry--I suck at it, and there's a field with a bazillion technical terms.

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (6/9/2006 4:05:26 PM)

LOL it's really not fair for me to use them though, especially since they are more of a first language for me [&:]

How about
