jlf1961 -> Deadliest Catch Fan thread.... or maybe we need to get a life.... (4/28/2009 5:49:13 PM)

Alright, for all deadliest catch fans on these boards, here are the links you have been wishing for, links to the home pages for the four main boats in the show!!!!

http://www.crabwizard.com/  The FV Wizard
http://www.corneliamarie.com/ The FV Cornelia Marie
http://www.fvnorthwestern.com/ The FV Northwestern
http://www.timebandit.tv/ The FV Timebandit

For those who dont know, FV is the US Coast Guard Designation for Fishing Vessel.

The full story on the Katmai can be found here... http://search.nwsource.com/search?topic=Local&from=ST&similarto=MB%3A2008493792

Included are reports on the hearings on the sinking, survivor testimonies, and all related information.  The show will not have the hearing results dealing with the vessel's sinking.
quote:

This is the third time in eight years that a head-and-gut vessel has sank off Alaska. The trio of sinkings have claimed at least 25 lives, and the fleet has been under a Coast Guard safety spotlight, which will ramp up again next week as a Marine Board of Investigation convenes in Anchorage to delve into the latest sinking and how to prevent future casualties.

As for the possibility of the Wizard sinking, as hinted at in the previews of at least two episodes, I am happy to inform all that the vessel is, as of the end of the crabbing season, safely anchored in her home port.

As for Captain Phil of the Cornelia Marie, I have not found any information on his health, however, his myspace page and the webpage has been updated recently.

Finally, for the record, and speaking as someone that actually repaired fishing vessels that worked the waters of the North Atlantic, I have seen vessels limp into port with steel hulls leaking from the wave impacts in the north Atlantic.  I am not saying that the Bering Sea is a cake walk, but, I have replaced sections of steel hulls that ranged in size from 20 square feet to an entire bow quarter that have been buckled due to the heavy seas.

Weather changes by the hour, seas routinely run as high as 80+ feet.  So the thirty to 60 foot seas the crabbers would be considered a calm day on the North Atlantic, the meanest bitch of an ocean on the planet.

When you consider the age of the crabbing fleet, and they survive the seasons in the Bering, compared to fishing vessels less than ten years old on the north Atlantic that have been retired due to the repeated structural damage to the vessels by the heavy seas, it should tell you something about the differences in the oceans.

The Bering sea is dangerous, simply because of the fact that there is the added threat of ice that can damage a hull.  The North Atlantic is dangerous because the weather is unpredictable.  With the warm waters of the gulf stream, the converging tropical weather fronts, arctic weather fronts, AND the weather fronts coming off the continent creates a permanently unstable environment.

Other more dangerous waters than the Bering for fishing vessels are those off the west coast.

Thanks for the update!  I love "Deadliest Catch!"  I want to have Jonathan's babies.  [:D]  <swoon>

I love those guys!

Actually, my favorite captain is Keith on the Wizard, I worked a shrimper in the gulf with a skipper like him.  He may remind you of Captain Bligh, but he always finds the crab.

As for the skipper I knew, he could find shrimp.  Of course the main difference between shrimping and crabbing is that shrimpers use nets.... I think I would rather haul nets than crab pots.

I love the show.

Can't understand the attraction of that show (nor any other of the seemingly endless number of similar shows)

jlf1961 -> RE: Deadliest Catch Fan thread.... or maybe we need to get a life.... (4/28/2009 9:11:34 PM)

The appeal for me is two fold and simple.

First, it is actually a real reality show.  The situations are real, not staged, there are no contests, and finally, every season, if you have watched the show, there have been life and death situations.

Secondly, I have worked a few seasons as a deck hand on shrimpers in the gulf.  While the water is not as cold, the results when something goes wrong are still the same, and the work is equally hard.  I can identify with those men.

In the last 35 years, I have lived a life that many people would only dream about.  With the exception of the time I was in college, I have worked in fields that were dangerous, sometimes life threatening.  In high school I was into junior rodeo, after high school it was the army as a Ranger, after that college, then a couple of years driving truck, two seasons working gulf shrimp boats, off seasons working in a boat yard.

Now I am paying the price, my lumbar spine is in such bad shape I suffer chronic pain, arthritis in my hands, both knees are shot... but the insane thing is, even if I knew then what it would be like now, I would do it all over again.  The pain is worth the living I did.

I agree, Jeff, I love the show because it's real.  I've never worked in the fisheries (my arthritis shrieks at the thought!) but I respect folks who work hard for a "maybe" income in a profession that's gone on forever.

I want EDGAR for my pet.  And I am hot for Johnathan, of course.

It's a great show. I make sure i catch it every week. There are very few jobs I have ever seen and thought Hell no im not doing that. That job is one of them.I have a buddy that goes up for the king crab season and does it. He's never been on tv but he knows these guys and says that the way they are on tv is just the way they are.

I love this show, didn't realize it was still on, being up in Canada now. I love it for it's reality, my brother was in the Coast Guard for almost 15 years and I can tell you that from what I've seen in relation to the CG, it's pretty damned accurate. You see the men in the good, the bad, the ugly (it has to be ugly to be working 20 hours straight!) and the happy and the sad. The fact that I love seafood let's me appreciate their hard work all the more.

Mmmmmmmmmmm, crab. Day - um!!! Now I wants my sushi! [:(]

Too bad the hearings on the Katmai accident wont be part of the series.

Personally, when I consider the current condition of some of the vessels in the US fishing fleet, I feel the producers of the show might want to consider following some of the recent hearings concerning some of the vessels that have sunk, the safety inspections that are conducted, etc.

We as fans of the show can be assured of the safety of the vessels on the show, which would have had to pass the insurance check before film crew could be allowed on the boats.

The reason I suggest the idea of a new show is because I have worked on some of the fishing vessels that operate in the North Atlantic and the gulf and have seen some of the vessels is rather sorry condition.  Most are in that shape from dealing with rough weather, others are in that shape due to "monkey rigging" repairs.

The Katmai lost steering prior to losing power.  Considering the fact that, depending on the builder, could be power assisted cable, hydraulic ram, or even chains, which stands to reason that the system was in disrepair.

The episode last night was a bit heart wrenching!... I couldn't imagine surviving 17 hours in those waters...amazingly resiliant!

I keep thinking about the chief engineer who went back for one last fix...

He had to have some idea where the fault was, if he thought it could be fixed before the boat turned turtle.  Funny thing about engineers, they have more of a bond with the vessel than the captain.  I could see this guy cussing under his breath about how the rest of the crew were not as fond of the girl as he was.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Deadliest Catch Fan thread.... or maybe we need to get a life.... (4/29/2009 5:17:42 PM)

Yeah, I am with you on that, Jeff.  I can see him figuring fine, the crew is the skipper's problem, he'll take care of the ship.  It sounded like she went down fast though.

LadyH, she was broadside to the seas, meaning the waves were her on the beam, which would roll her to the point of having her gunnels underwater.

With each additional wave, she would ship more water, increasing the list (angle of slant from horizontal, for those landlubbers following the thread.)

thornhappy -> RE: Deadliest Catch Fan thread.... or maybe we need to get a life.... (5/1/2009 4:58:21 PM)

late to the thread, but this week's episode was something, eh?

Last week's high point for me was Sig biting the herring and making the crew retch.

jlf1961 -> RE: Deadliest Catch Fan thread.... or maybe we need to get a life.... (5/1/2009 5:52:26 PM)

Personally, I thought Sig was doing the right thing by not telling the crew about the Katmai.
