ORIGINAL: antipode I've spent years in SE Asia, where most peasants kneel or hunch because they don't have chairs. It is just a matter of exercise, doing it every day, and your body will adjust. Westerners just do not have the muscle and joint development that facilitates it, simply because we've been using chairs since the Middle Ages. So if you really want to, just do it a couple of times a day, seven days a week, and you will feel it gets more manageable over the months. I'll bet you can't carry a 60 lb sack of rice on your head without touching it, while walking for 4 hours, either.... My work requires me to be close to the ground quite a bit, and on ground you might not want to put anything but the soles of your boots on. So, you work in the squatted position. I remember early on thinking "How the hell do Vietnamese peasants do this for hours?". Well, I guess it just takes time to build up the muscle and joint strength to do it. I'm always stiff for a few minutes when I get up (ain't gettin' any younger, ya know), but don't suffer any major ill effects. I don't see why the same "tolerance build up" approach wouldn't work with kneeling for extended periods. But I've never had to kneel for longer than a few minutes without being released into a sitting with my legs tucked under me position. j
