It doesn't appear whether it makes him happy or not, but that there are some that identify with the occurances of the letter. Those comments are there, on that forum and some others. So do you disagree with Kirata that there are comments from people that say they have had similar instances occur with them?

To be blunt, I read a bunch of the comments on the website in question and those claiming to be ex liberals all sounded like BS to me. I know a lot of people who have gotten more conservative as they got older but none became the sort of foaming at the mouth fanatics that are reading and posting on that site.

Furthermore the various claims all struck me as the same bullshit as in the quite obviously fake letter.

Okay, okay, we admit it. It was a bad joke. Sorry. We were just trying to pull your leg. Actually, the whole site is phony. It's just a gag. Yeah I know, bad taste. Sorry again. I guess it just goes to show that you can't fool everybody. Thanks. I hope we've learned our lesson.

As they say, "progress not perfection".
The first step is admitting that you have a problem! And that "problem" is with those on the "left" and the "right."
Us people in the middle are obviously happier people.

I'm so glad that the selectively edited quote is still alive and well on the right.

And it looks like Obama's talk about bitterness and clinging is all too true.  As neo-cons desperately pretend that more people are like them, in reality the country as a whole drifts more to the Democratic side, and the Republicans themselves drift further to the right, away from the country.

Being reduced to inventing fake 'letters from a recovering liberal', well that's so sad, and so symptomatic of the state of disarray some people find themselves in... they should be busy doing something constructive, like producing a viable and moderate alternative to the Democrats, instead of wasting their time in juvenile tactics like that. For shame.

slvemike4u -> RE: Letter of Amends from a Recovering Liberal (5/12/2009 6:12:20 PM)

Let me see if I have this straight. One shitty letter,236 comments....and"leftist" liberals should ,based on the exaggerated parody of actual liberal positions,re-evaluate their political positions......let me know how that works out heh.
Coming to a neighborhood near you....a conservative revival....LOL

When you reply to me, I tend to think you're replying to me. Silly, I know. My apologies. I accept your explanation that you just felt moved to provide a "summary" for the reading impaired.

Well, sounds like a bit of confirmation bias in this post.

In reality, for years and years the majority of the US population has been more conservative than liberal.  I suspect that the recent electoral wins hasn't changed that.

In other words, the middle third of the American electorate were unhappy enough to overcome their normal propensities.

I suspect that many of the great middle might just have a little "re-think" over the next couple of elections, especially when the left continues to act like they have a unquestioned right to do as they wish, without really understanding how limited their "mandate from heaven" actually is.

"We won" was a bit like the Republican response.  I suspect the attitude will be sorely regretted by more mainstream Democrats in the future.

It happens all the time, Ken. True Believers.  They are noisy assholes, wherever they go.  Yippie becomes yuppie, Saul becomes Paul.  Arnold Schwarzeneger becomes Governator Girly-man.

kittinSol -> RE: Letter of Amends from a Recovering Liberal (5/12/2009 7:21:28 PM)

The electoral landscape is changing to reflect the changing demographics. The old conservative views are dying, together with the people that hold them. A certain way of thinking is slowly disappearing. I understand why it's scary to you: change can be. But it is inevitable, and of course some people cling on to old notions and passé values; but in the end, all that they are doing is watching the train pass them by... preferably at high speed.

It makes me happy to see you say that it would be constructive for somebody to come up with a "viable and moderate alternative to the Democrats."
