Candystripper,

As someone who converted to Judaism from Christianity almost 16 years ago, perhaps I can help. (Though now I define myself as a Jewish Pagan, grinz.) First, read up on it all you can. A few books are different, however the Jewish scriptures are similar to what Christians call the Old Testament. Another book you will want to take a good look at is the Talmud. There are also several groupings (denominations as a way of putting it). There are Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Chassidic. I converted after studying with a Reform Rabbi. A year of serious study was required, and I had to convince him in order to study that I was serious about it. Yes, they do tend to disourage you at first. That is because there has been a long history of discrimination against those who are Jewish and active extermination of them in mass numbers as recently as the last century. So, they want to make sure you really want what you are asking for. As how to define the different "denominations" the best comparison I can make is that Orthodox is to Reform as a very strict fundamentalist Christian church would be to a Presbyterian church, though Reform still retains a lot of the traditional ritualism and its beauty within the service. Conservative falls between the two. Chassidic is a lot like Orthodox, except they have a few variations of their own. Actually, the book Judaism for Dummies does have a lot of the basic info. Probably the easier rabbi to convince to teach you would be a Reform or Conservative rabbi. Good luck in your search.

To really confuzzle you candy sweet. I have the cabala spelt Cabbalah, Cabala, Kaballah and Kabala. All are correct as the word itself means "From Mouth to Ear" in other words an oral tradition. Cabala comes from the Ancient Hebrew QBL. Ther are some excelent books on the Cabala and there are many which presume you understand the basics all can appear confusing to those new to the area. I'll help as a I can.

The only reason we even deal with church is because my wife works at one (yes, my lovely slut of a submissive wife is a church secretary... oh the irony). Other then that, I'm of the opinion that most (not all, but most) churches are bigotry based organizations intent on promoting one set of beliefs as inherently better then all others. That includes most Jewish synagogues, though at least they have the good sense to claim their religion is also their life and culture, thus living what they preach. You can't argue with that, just shake your head and move on. It's atheism for me all the way, it's infinitely easier to believe in humanity then some nebulous creator figure, even though humanity keeps letting us down. But more power to you Candy if it makes you happy, that's really the important thing. But if they tell you to burn all atheists, don't say I didn't warn you. *grin*

The wife does enjoy the tingle she gets when the pastor says "Our Lord and Master" though, so there must be SOME good in going to church.

here else I'd just have to take issue from a pagan perspective.
