thanks again - we'll see what happens - I certainly won't do the delete thing again.

You are welcome. One significant part of My business is cleaning this crap out of people's computers. The worst I have seen so far is approximately 12,000 infections.

geeezus! i had one guy with over 4000 and i thought that was a record LOL just to boot it up i would turn it on and walk away make some coffee and come back LOL its great because you have to get all their data off of it too you know otherwise its a simple waste it and start over. i would say you got the record on that one

In addition to the many fine suggestions for anti-spyware in this discussion, I also use CCCleaner and RegCleaner. They can be located here and are free :

http://www.jv16.org/
http://www.ccleaner.com

Running them before doing a defrag seems to save a lot of defrag time.

Also, for those interested in a fairly simple but effective file archiver, I've found PowerArchiver does a pretty good job on all media I've used it on so far.

Don't know if this has already been suggested, but I run "Adaware" every day. Another one is "Spybot Search and Destroy". Just do a search for them, they are both free and good.

I run Spybot and Adaware most every day. Have also downloaded the Microsoft AntiSpyware program. They do a good job but it seems as if the same malware reinstalls itself everyday.

The latest in infuriating spyware/malware I seem to have been infected by is a program that pops up constantly telling me I have Spyware on my computer and instructing me to click through to buy anti-spyware program! Aargh. Am about ready to strip the hard drive and start over. Geez.

I have no idea how people do it. I have Internet Explorer 7, Microsoft Defender, Spybot S&D and Panda BusinesSecure running all the time. I never get spyware... Knock on wood.
