I bulk "Christians" forcing their beliefs on people of other religions and beliefs with the mormons coming to your door to convert you and the televangalists. And yes, I think giving out bibles is forcing/getting in your face/being rude.

It smacks of British imperialist forcing their religion on the "natives/savages" to "bring them up" to civilised standards of living, and while doing so, destroying ways of life that have existed for hundreds/thousands of years, and losing a lot of knowledge in the process.

At the very least, it says that you think that whatever they worship is wrong, implying ignorance. It sort of reminds me of some of the mission work being done in third world countries where to get the food to survive, the people have to sit through a sermon.  Yep - that would bring me to the light of Jesus Christ - being made to sit through a sermon when i am hungry and my stomach is growling and my kids are hungry.

Sanity -> RE: "Christian"Soldiers Handing Out Bibles in Afghanistan?! (5/24/2009 2:18:43 PM)

Certainly no Muslim would kill anyone just for having a bible. Islam is the religion of peace.

But if they were to kill, I can certainly understand how such a detestable act would be anyone's fault but their own.

Yeah.

I'm very happy for you that it works for you - to all doubters, take it from a confirmed Heathen, it does work and very well for many.

But the problem with this is that its very, very, very likely that there were Christian Afghans for some time before we in the north of Europe were converted. Clearly, it didnt work out long term. Similarly with Buddhism, which was in Afghanistan long before Christianity might have got there.

And the real problem is that this behaviour - handing out Bibles, just isnt a helpful one at this point in the current scenario. In fact its a harmful behaviour to the interests of our troops and to the interests of those civilians seen to be receiving the Bibles. When those civilians are later executed, their blood will be as much on the hands of those who put them to predicament as those who fired the shots.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: "Christian"Soldiers Handing Out Bibles in Afghanistan?! (5/24/2009 2:21:13 PM)

What bibles were handed out? What behavior are you refering to? Are you refering to the group discussion about handing out bibles, and it being mentioned repeatedly that it violated General Order 1? As far as handing someone some literature, a bible, Quran, or Plato's "The Republic", the gift can always be refused. I believe that Plato's works would probably be illegal under sharia law.

The extreme emotions of Anti-Christianity, are just like any extreme emotion, irrationality.

Someone mentioned having to sit through a sermon to get food. Well actually they can do like many would do, and show up after the sermon. Christian Ministries usually will not turn a person away that is starving, and many of those ministries time their services to just before and after meal time. No one is forced to sit through them.

Damn Phil some in this crowd really need that pitch, can you check with the quartermaster on that? ;)

LadyEllen, i believe the Lord gives us discernment. As a Christian i believe i will be safe doing my Father's will. There are many Christian that believe this as well. I've never had a mormon come to my door. Does this happen often where you live?

and the televangalists.
That is what the remote control is for. If you don't like the program, change the channel.

And yes, I think giving out bibles is forcing/getting in your face/being rude.
Forcing someone to take it and forcing them to read would be in your face, however giving someone something? Wasn't it Barbara that said "just say no thanks"?

Well if they fed them first, they would fall asleep. Can't have that now can we.

"My cloud friend is better than your cloud friend!"  I bet both groups have "Secret Santa's."

That brought back memories of this clown:

MARGARET WARNER: As the new deputy undersecretary of defense for intelligence, lieutenant general William Boykin is in charge of tracking down top terror targets like Osama bin laden and Saddam Hussein. But Boykin, an evangelical Christian, says neither man is America's true enemy. He spoke this past June to a church in Oregon. This video was broadcast on NBC nightly news last week.

LT. GEN. WILLIAM BOYKIN: The enemy is a spiritual enemy. He's called the principality of darkness. The enemy is a guy called Satan.

MARGARET WARNER: As for international terrorists:

LT. GEN. WILLIAM BOYKIN: They're after us because we're a Christian nation.

MARGARET WARNER: In another church speech, delivered while wearing his army uniform, Boykin said this about a Muslim warlord in Somalia:

LT. GEN. WILLIAM BOYKIN: You know what? I knew that my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God and his was an idol.

If Rizzla has pulled out of marketing their products there ... perhaps these bibles will contribute in a practical manner to the "spiritual" needs of the locals?

and therefore is it not the case that it isnt Islam or Muslims who warrant our ire (or our fire) but in actual fact a bunch of violent men who associate themselves with Islam and Muslims?

QFT!

LadyEllen -> RE: "Christian"Soldiers Handing Out Bibles in Afghanistan?! (5/24/2009 3:23:49 PM)

QFT? (edit, apparently it means "quoted for truth" - thanks!)

Anyhow, this discernment you speak of - its a fairly common theme in all religions I would suspect. My own tells me that as long as I stay true to the Gods then harm and death is nothing to be feared - equally I am also gladly surrendered to whatever fate might befall me in staying true and also assured that my life is lived well and my death when it comes will be at the right time for the purpose of the Gods I honour. More a case of cultural expression than actual substance between this and the Christian version I feel.

Hope youre enjoying the weekend too; we have a holiday here tomorrow, although I'm working - the perils of international trade we Viking types engage in. It must have been so much easier in the old days...... LOL!

Me too, I say my prayers on rising and on going to sleep and you don't need a "religion" to do that.
You just cut out the middleman.

Mezrem -> RE: "Christian"Soldiers Handing Out Bibles in Afghanistan?! (5/24/2009 4:13:52 PM)

This news is more then a week old for one thing...It holds a kernal of truth too it from my understanding. There was a member of the military who's church back in the states sent him two bibles in the native languages. It was the company chaplin who informed the man that it was against regs for them to be trying to convert the nationals. The report initaly is from Al Jazira <sp?> a source that I would think of as WAY less then unbiased.

I understand the Christian mind set but I agree with the rules that do not allow missionary work from our people over there. If I'm wrong and those bibles where passed out then I hope like hell the men get a Dishonorable Discharge for the conduct.

Proselytising, in the same country where we're conducting a war, is counterproductive in the extreme.

The middle East already thought we were on a crusade in Iraq, and some of the first "relief" groups into Iraq were ones who spoke right up and said their major aim was to get converts.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: "Christian"Soldiers Handing Out Bibles in Afghanistan?! (5/24/2009 5:31:30 PM)

This is the reason why the Military has an order issued against doing this, in those areas.

Owner59 -> RE: "Christian"Soldiers Handing Out Bibles in Afghanistan?! (5/24/2009 5:36:42 PM)

You`ll notice though, that they are very aware of the order, but then their leader points out that you can give "gifts".

They know how to bullshit and break rules and orders as well as any con-man.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: "Christian"Soldiers Handing Out Bibles in Afghanistan?! (5/24/2009 5:54:47 PM)

You do as well. Did they do it? How many times was the General Order mentioned? Were the bibles confiscated? How many bibles are we talking about? Why are you trying to paint a group, whether Military or Christian, as being so horrible? At this point I am not sure which group you are attacking.

So if a soldier gave an Afghan citizen a copy of Plato's: The Republic, what would you think?

What a load of bollocks. Christianity suggests its followers offer the other cheek, not that they take arms. It's a peacenick religion: therefore, those that fight in its name are either lying, or complete idiots. Or both.

Thank God Charles Martel was not a peacenick. Same goes for the Holy League at the Battle of Vienna.

I for one like the fact I don't have to pray in a certain direction.
