LadyConstanze, from your perspective, I understand that it's normal conversation, and usually not considered rude.   Having lived in a couple of major cities, I find that people do often use the work question as a way to get to know each other, better understand their passions, and possibly network.

However, even though I love what I do, and cannot complain about my salary, I get a little rashy, anytime I feel someone is trying to size me up financially.   The work question is usually how we estimate someone's "worth."   It isn't mine, by the way.    What I do is a very small indicator of who I am.   One large city I lived in, had a very standard opening line in conversation which I found rude/irritating...  "What do you do and what do you drive"  asked  pretty close to the end of the introduction line "it's nice to meet you..."   A great many people do ask the question, to size someone up financially, which I would imagine you agree, is abnoxious, coming from someone with whom you haven't shared very personal information.    M

"What do you do and what do you drive" is pretty much going that step over normal conversation into rudeness, separately I wouldn't consider the issue rude, but then again I believe in small, environmentally friendly cars and if anybody has a problem with a Honda Civic, too tough!

I just think work and what we do for most of our time leaves an impact on us, now if a person is in a job that leaves them cold completely, that they just see as a way to pay the bills without much commitment, it does tell me something about the person itself and it might not shed the most positive light on them. To be honest I would rather talk to somebody who works in a job that isn't too prestigious but he or she feels passionate about it, than somebody in a rather prestigious job where they don't feel they have a real commitment to it.

Oh my, sorry if I touched a nerve...

You didn't "touch a nerve."  It was just that you were on the verge of becoming deeply tedious, and I'm sure you wouldn't want that.

Really? Now I just thought you were there long before me... Nevermind, you seem to have a problem with much of what I say, want to take it up privately without boring the whole bord?

FR:  I have a friend who's an electrician and hates talking about his work.  When asked what he 'does', he always replies "I gather information for a department attached to the Home Office".  He rarely gets asked any further questions.  Indeed, he seldom gets any further conversation at all.  This is an agreeable result for my friend because he doesn't, basically, like people.

No, thanks.  I'm really not that interested in what you have to say.

Thank you, the feeling is more mutual than I can possibly express, dearest. As you will possibly not stop your little "quips" I will take the liberty to use the blessed "hide" button.

Fast Reply -

I have not noticed particular types of professions being specific to male submissives unless location is taken into account. As an example, in the SF Bay Area you will find a high number of people working in IT, programming, enginneering, etc. And there seems to be a higher than average number who have current or previous military experience that seek the structure of D/s relationships.

Had to revive this thread, because I've found a new way to run/scare men away, inadvertently... [:(]
I really don't like to talk to random strangers about "what do you do" bullchit."   I don't ask.   We have general conversation, and if work comes up, it does.   Mind you, I don't care if a man has a glam job, is unfortunately unemployed, or what he makes...   However, if he does ask me what I do, and I reply, I than expect him to have something equal or more exciting than myself, or I lose any enthusiasm I had about this random stranger on the net.

A guy asked, and after telling him I don't like to talk about my work, and him persisting...   I told him I was a lady of the night (a great ladyellen idea, though I am not), and he freaked out...  I laughed my ass off. [8D]   M

Was he the sort who seldom looks at a woman's face, M?  Because if you were to try to swing that one to me, I bet I'd be able to see it.  I have an idea that you're the kind of woman whose face shows what she's feeling. [;)]

FullfigRIMAAM1 -> RE: Male subs' occupation (6/13/2009 8:20:01 AM)

Oh no Peon...   This was online, and why I was so flippant with him...   When I meet someone face to face, I am an open book, and wouldn't be evasive.   And yes, I have been told I have "expressive eyes."

PeonForHer -> RE: Male subs' occupation (6/13/2009 8:29:29 AM)

'Lady of the Night'.  *Cackle*.  Very Jane Austen.

Next, try "I'm a Concubine".  If he then announces that he thought that was a creature a bit like a hedgehog, you've probably got the wrong man. [;)]
