He IS the government, after all. I don't see anything slowing him down at all, in doing whatever he wants to do. Would the last government employee leaving Detroit, please be sure to turn the lights off?

My question about this sale is, what exactly is this Chinese company getting? Let's keep in mind that Hummer began by developing an extremely capable off-road, light weapons platform. Are they buying factories and employee pension plans, or are they getting a shitload of military technology we might wish they hadn't been handed? Yeah, I know. It's hardly the timing sequences for an H-bomb, but HMMWVs move armies pretty damn well. How long before this company starts getting orders from the Chinese Army?

Somehow it is Obama`s fault You would have posted the same nonsense if Obama had bailed GM out. Can you tell me how GM could survive, without either a bailout, or selling parts of the company ? Would you rather that Hummer wasnt brought out, and that those workers were made redundant ?

AM General did. They build the H1 and H2 for GM. So really I have no idea what GM is selling. China already has 2 companies building HMMWV's with an unknown connection to AM General.

I wouldn't have thrown 20 billion at the company, literally taking control over it, and given 50 billion more so they can go through bankruptcy. They should have decided to go into bankruptcy without the government's money. Airlines and retailers have done it, restructured, and came out okay. I fear for the population of a country where, with little social welfare provision as a safety net, so many would be quite happy to see tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of their countrymen and women thrown into poverty for the mistakes of others, whilst simultaneously holding that this instance in particular and the application of such thinking in general, does not affect them or it would seem have the slightest potential of affecting them. The irony of the whole situation is stunning; naked selfishness and sod the consequences got us into this mess and we now believe that by pursuing the same ideology we should improve things? E

While I would be tickled pink to offer up a big plate of blame to Obama and the other idiots in D.C., Politesub is correct. The hummer is losing money.... it's not like we are selling the plans for state of the art weapons systems. China has more then enough weapons to deal with us at the moment.. if they wanted to lead us to ruin all they need do is dump all those dollars they have onto the market.

This should have been handled with a bankruptcy, then restructuring - the way its always been done in the past. That way the unions (which are at fault here probably more than Obama himself) would have been put in their place, instead of the bondholders and the shareholders getting absolutely reamed like this. Now that is just being cynical... our government wouldn't sell off a division of a company because it made "gas guzzlers" and didn't fit into the new proposed CAFE standards. Then again, that could be precisely the reason they did it, somebody realized how much it was going to cost to convert the plant and vehicles over to meet those new proposals and standards. So i would think the target buyers would remain as is. I wasnt shooting the messenger as such, just commenting on the amount of "lets Blame Obama" threads. The implications of letting GM go bankrupt, at a time when the stock exchange was in freefall, would have been a catastrophe. GM were in trouble long before Obama took office, we both know that. How did Obama & the Democrats destroy the economy while Bush was in office, you ask? Here's part of the story: Obama: sub-prime mortgages "a good idea". Democrats were wrong on Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac - and Bush, McCain & the Republicans were right. And of course the resulting credit crisis hit all the automakers extremely hard. There's a lot more where that came from if you ever care to actually look into it, as opposed to what you are doing now - which is casting aspersions without having any real facts information to back yourself up. As for GM, Democrats have always hated and gone after big businesses like GM. Ambulance chasing attorneys have harmed the business, they and unions combined with the C.A.F.E rules and the lack of America's ability to drill for and process oil... resulting in last summer's record gasoline prices have gone a long way towrds causing all the cumulative damage we're seeing come to fruition today. And "letting them go bankrupt" is how it's legally done when this sort of thing happens. They're restructured under court supervision, as opposed to the supervision of politicians who have an agenda. Regarding automaker's financial position though, there is practically no end to the roadblocks and impediments those on the left have thrown in their way. GM bought the Hummer brand from AM General, in the late 90's. The H2 and H3 were GM creations. AM General made the H1 and H2 for GM, with GM building the H3.
