I think there is some truth to that, both for males and females. You can have people who are quite nice looking and might be beautiful if they took the time and trouble to dress up their looks, hair and nails, make up for females but they don't bother because they prefer to spend their time reading, thinking, learning, doing.

And there are people who don't live up to their potential, didn't do well in school, don't pursue intellectual ideas because they are focused on being sexually attractive. So they spend their money on expensive tailored suits for men, designer clothing for women, and not on school or books.

You can't be highly intellectual and highly beautiful because they both require a lot of work and there isn't enough hours in the day to do both. How many supermodels are going to college part time? I doubt if any since they can't commit to classes when they need to fly over to Milan at a moment's notice. Male and female. And how many Nobel Prize winners spend precious hours not in the lab but shopping and at a spa? Probably none also.

It is true that there are ugly ducklings who grow into beautiful swans. When I was in high school there was a girl in my class who was on the pudgy side, didn't put much effort into personal hygiene and who could best be described as frumpy. When she came to our tenth reunion I didn't even recognize her at first. She was beyond beautiful. She wasn't just gorgeous, she was tell your pecker down boy! down boy! beautiful. She was drop to your knees and worship your Goddess beautiful (and I'm Dom!). She has never shown at any of the reunions since. Bummer.

I did read the whole OP. I didn't miss the add-on. The initial stereotype that beautiful women cannot be intelligent is the original template - blokes were only mentioned in there as an afterthought. Nobody can deny that the female stereotype in question prevails in our society: most of the participants to this thread recognise this.

The attempt to find beautiful and intelligent women from the pages of celebrity mags is pitiful, and limited. Thank you to the poster who mentioned the astrophysics lovely.

I don't believe this is true: natural beauty that requires little upkeep can coexist with deep intelligence and a voracious intellect: I know some people personally who illustrate this very point.

I didn't find the astrophysicist beautiful, attractive yes and certainly compared to most women scientists who downplay their looks to be taken seriously. But not beautiful in the head turning way if you passed her on the street, made traffic stop way.

I find Madonna not intelligent per se, but shrewd. I also don't think she's ever been classically beautiful. And I don't judge intelligence by how much money they earn.

I must admit, my first response is where on earth are you getting this from? Having been around scientists for the past two dozen years or so, I haven't met any of them that "downplay their looks to be taken seriously." I've met a lot of them who simply don't want to take the time to apply makeup, blowdry hair, and wear impractical clothing to walk into a lab. Jeans and a pullover are pretty much the order of the day in academe (labs tend to be on the chillier side.) I've never seen anybody wear glasses they didn't need, wear clothing with pads in the wrong places, or anything like that. When presenting at a meeting, there is a certain amount of fussing in terms of presentation that goes on by both men and women that are a bit unaccustomed to wearing more formal garb. (I've been asked to help some gents tie a necktie on more than one occasion.) The clothing chosen follows the same rules as politicians or any job seeker- the idea is to look smart, professional, and well put together without in your face sex appeal. Make no mistake, these women want to look good- for the same reasons that the men do- it's important for a career. In short- contrary to movies and TV, the reality of women scientists is that they are human beings first- scientists second. And human beings take a certain level of pains in their presentation. I don't see scientists as being different than any other professional. Nor would Albert Einstein's lack of sartorial splendor go unremarked amongst male scientists. Scientists have grown accustomed to asking people for money and to attempt to communicate their research to the public. Carl Sagan is a much closer role model for most scientists than Einstein.

While I certainly agree with you that Madonna isn't classically beautiful- in terms of business she's a bloody genius. She's been able to make a fortune off her brand, and keep it in the public eye the way that very few corporations have been able to do.

I don't wish to get into an argument with you about something you have
no knowledge of that I experienced. Let's just agree that the picture I
linked to did not do the woman justice.

The woman's beauty is such that she does have that "stop everything" impact.
It certainly did when she walked into the room that night. There are simply
not that many woman who spontaneously cause men to turn and look at each
other and exclaim about her beauty. As I posted, she did.

But the boys in the pub in the OP will have to just believe me. I suspect she
will be too busy flying back and forth between her work on the LHC
and her new professorship at Caltech to stop by and educate them.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder definately and that makes it hard for me to name three they will agree on. Intelligence is also measured differently by people so again hard to come to an agreement on that too.

There are different types of "intelligence" and of course different types of beauty too. And there are so many variables that influence our opinions with regards to intelligence and beauty. For example, when we feel chemistry with someone, or a bond with someone who shares similar views, we tend to see them as intelligent, and perhaps more attractive physically as well. It really just comes down to perception, I think.
