Well, I guess we have established that blind partisan bashing of the other side is alive and well eh? To those who are claiming that since the Dems diod it during the Bush years, or that that the Reps did it during the Clinton years, have missed the point.
The point is that it is not a helpful or useful tactic in governing. It may have its place during an election, but afterwards it really doesn't do much to contribute to the good government of the nation. You sound like a bunch of kids "Well he started it!!"" I will tell you the same thing I tell my kids when they use that line on me: Then you end it.

How old were you when Clinton was in office?

LOL.  I was just starting school when Nixon was forced from office, Muse.  By the time Wild Bill came along, I alway already jaded, cynical, and making side money working for political campaigns.

The fact is that doesn't work. You're old enough to remember the Dukakis presidential campaign. Dukakis tried to rise above the race baiting and dirty tricks and the whole bashing of everything on the left, remember when Bush I tried to make being a 'card carrying member of the ACLU' into something to be ashamed of? Well I was in the US Navy then and had donated money to the ACLU on a regular basis and agreed with Dukakis that the thing to do was to not rise to the bait. And we all remember that glorious November day when Dukakis defeated Bush and Atwater, wait a second... that's right we didn't fight back and we got beat and had 4 years of Bush I which set the stage for GWB. 12 of the last 20 years presided over by Bushes because the Dems tried to be better than that.

Well I've learned the lesson. No more unilateral disarmament. If they want a nicer tone of political discourse then they need to stop buying Anne Coulters screeds. They have to reject the theocrats. They have to rein in the talk radio scum. Till then I will make a full throated defence of my beliefs and will show their lies for what they are.

You don't seem to like people being free to "buy into" whatever opinions they think fit the facts. Views that disagree with yours have to be "reigned in" ...they're all "lies". Well, at least you have a good grasp of what it means to live in a free country. Sorry you don't like it.

I'm not talking about forcing anyone to do anything. What I'm saying is as long as the right feels free to attack me and mine I will fight back. Which sounds like freedom to me. Too bad you can't understand that.

I want to thank some posters here, for some great examples of how partisan politics can steer things away from the OP, big issues, and things we need to pay attention to. You guys that gave these examples need to stop, stand up, walk to the bathroom and look in the mirror. Then ask yourself if you are part of the problem. Be honest, because no one is there but you.

You seem passionate about being dispassionate, and I'll never get that. To me, some things are worth arguing for, even fighting for. I fully agree with you that many people (all people who have a pulse) tend to go over the top, and that things can be awfully shrill at times, but that's just a part of politics, and it always has been. It's a part of the process of steering the ship, and it's fun, exciting at times, educational and entertaining to take part in the process.

You're a curiosity to me. Why do you appoint yourself the one who seeks to bring all persuasions to perfect harmony and agreement. Were you the middle of a raucous family growing up? The one who tried to keep everyone from getting hurt?

What makes you tick, anyway. You see, growing up I watched my grandpa eat milk toast because he didn't have any teeth. And I guess he kind of liked milk toast. I know I never did, but why do you like it?

You know what I mean?

I think you can forget your milquetoast theory. Orion is just suggesting that a little less name-calling and a little more willingness to listen to and respect differing views, instead of behaving like a bunch of cranked up demonstrators waving signs and shouting, would further the common good.

You know what I mean?

Actually, partisan discussion is useful, IF both sides are willing to listen and discuss and potentially be swayed by the "other side."

We unfortunately no longer have it in our politics...but then, we don't have on CM either....

I think there's more to it than that. I believe he's crusading against controversy itself, and people who speak in a direct manner about firmly held beliefs, and not just certain insulting behavior.

Look up at the title of his thread.

I am likely one of the most passionate people you will meet, concerning my beliefs. You say that is just part of poltics, but it does not have to be most of the time. It is only that way if you accept it, and by accepting it you condone it. Discourse of ideas is part of steering a ship, not yanking the rudder, just because someone with a different political perspective wants to turn right.

Fun? Oh yeah that is the distraction part I was commenting about. The cheap shots and name calling just detracts from some good discussions. I have asbestos suits (metaphore) from when I was a part of a philosophy/religion/politics forum/chat years ago. Yeah it can be fun, but some are trying to have some serious discussions, and this fun of name calling and bullshit derailments ruins what they are doing. Is having fun a good justification?

Why try the psycho babble bullshit. No I was not in the middle of a raucous family growing up. I am not trying to achieve perfect harmony and agreement. I am not trying to keep anyone from getting hurt. Have you not actually read the words I typed? Stop trying to read between the lines as there is nothing there. I am fucking direct and in your face. You don't have to fucking guess what my motivations are. They are to try and reduce the amount of bullshit name calling, school yard, childish shit that you and others engage in when others are trying to have a serious discussion.

I have no clue what you mean. Why try and figure me out? See you are focusing on me, and not on the issues I have brough forward. Maybe you should ask yourself why you focuses on me, and not on the issues.

You would be absolutely wrong, but then again nothing will convince you of that, now will it. You no longer take anyone at their word, do you?

Good past Kirata, although most of us on the politics Forum would be guilty of getting carried away at one point or another. I know I have been.

I`m never left or right wing on every issue, but I will defend what I believe with a passion. Sometimes when doing that its easy to get carried away with the game of post tennis.

When there is gridlock in Congress they can't pass mew legislation, impose more un needed regulations and raise taxes on an already over taxed country. I like gridlock.

You can count me in then, I'm with you. See, that was what I was questioning, thanks for clearing that up. You're not really against  partisan politics, just general trollishness, baiting, and name calling. That sort of thing.

I think you got the title of the thread wrong, since that's the case...

But yeah, I'm with you.

These are words you never want to hear. We are the Government and are here to help you. They certainly don't always work in our best interest. Usually it is just the opposite..
