Gridlock in Congress is a good thing..

Why would a government unable to act on behalf of the people be a good thing ?

Because it means they aren't spending our money, or getting any new taxes approved...

Thadius, How would you run the country otherwise ? What mechanisms would you suggest that actually work ? No government at all would be way more detrimental to the US than partisan politics.

Politesub,  the beauty of it, is that there are already enough tax laws and spending projects on the books.  In general, the only time gridlock gets broken is when it is something that is needed, or in case of an emergency.

The less they get done (in terms of writing new laws or new taxes) the better off my wallet and way of life are in the long run.  Yes, that sounds selfish, but it doesn't make it any less true.

Thadius, I agree with your comments regards tax ect, but in general if we have no government we have no society. Sadly we cant pick and choose which bits of government we want. This could be a thread on its own.

Actually I think Thadius is more or less correct. We pretty much have enough laws, taxes, programs, etc. Ideally the Gvt would justt leave well enough alone until something comes up that needs dealing with, rather than to continuously be seen to be working hard. Often the best thing for the Gvt to do is to sit back and watch. to observe how things are running, and to step in when things are going awry, rather than try to continuously adjust and tweak things whether they need tweaking or not.

Indeed Arpig, but gridlock would shut down government when it was needed, which is my point.

I agree Politesub. I am opposed to the mindless partisanship that infests pretty much all forms of Gvt. Even in a one=party state they have factions and cliques within the single party, and as far as parliamentary deadlock, hell just look at Italy.

This a point that anarchists, and anarcho-capitalists especially totally miss. There is ALWAYS governence of one sort or another, whether its formal, informal, or just he who is strongest sets the rules. Every "organism" has to have direction or it cannot survive (DNA being one of the most basic), and social organisms are no different.

It is absolutely necessary for a healthy democracy in my opinion. An opposing point of view can only be healthy in checking the abuse of power of the majority party.

It is at times frustrating but it serves its purpose in slowing legislation and somewhat controlling pork.

Butch

You are correct but lets look at just what happens when party A has complete control of govt. and when party B has done when in control. In fact that research is almost impossible because we haven't had that until 2000-2008. Now we have it again the other way and we will see some differences but not that many.

Some say that our current vertical govt. is at risk of very slow progress or even failure and not just because of its policies but because of the complete mess they inherited.

Actually, he who is strongest sets the rules isnt cohesive government, its perpetual anarchy. Ironic really, isnt it.
