Like the title says.. When it comes to tieing up your partners.. Did you just learn by trial and error? Or did someone teach you how to do it?

Do you prefer stuff that is smooth so it binds, but doesn't chafe? Or do you prefer stuff that chafes a bit to cause some discomfort or pain?

A lot of trial and error, and making my pet stand there while I practice shibari technique on him.  However, I prefer soft rope, such as the military rope, the black and grey stuff, if I can't get my hands on good japanese silk.  To me it's more an art than a kink though.  *shrug*

It is a good idea to find someone who is skilled with rope bondage. Sometimes rope is tricky: certain knots tighten without you meaning them to. circulation can be compromised, and the various rope types have different uses and weight loads if you also try suspension in your scenes.

At the very least, purchase the "Erotic Bondage Handbook" by Jay Wiseman

Good luck

Oooh, good call on that!  Great book, totally spaced it.  I second the recommendation.

Did you just learn by trial and error? At first

Or did someone teach you how to do it? I have been trained by Lee and JD

Do you prefer stuff that is smooth so it binds, but doesn't chafe? Or do you prefer stuff that chafes a bit to cause some discomfort or pain?

Lee has tied me in a lot of differnt ropes and fibers, I like nylon best and jute the least. When we do long ties i like to be comfy, like suspended over a waterfall but for photoshoots I can deal with the pain of hemp because it sure is pretty.

Trial and error here. Thanks for the book recommendation, I'll definitely have to give that a look...

I don't have a very technically minded brain when it comes to anything other than PC's, so trying to follow instructions from a book or video always kinda baffles me. I don't know if being tutored by a living breathing person would make a difference. It's the one thing, along with Sudoku that just makes my head spin.

Simple ties are all well and good, and I can imobilise - after a fashion

I prefer soft cotton rope, it's more about comfort than restriction or endurance for me. I want her to feel hugged rather than captured.

Both, all of the above
I was taught a lot, but nobody can teach you everything
and I love most kinds of rope, depends on the scene, and the place on the body that the rope is going

Another good book
Two Knotty Boys, Showing You the ropes

Hmm, i started typing boys up as i was a child in our village. No girls, because they were not running with us in the fields and woods. When you met a member of the other "gang" alone it was usual to tie them against a tree and let his others members know, so they can rescue him. I liked it a lot.

I really love Shibari and M. can do some shibarian styles and designs. I have not the patience for it, not to do it and not to have done it to me, because for being really beautiful you need some time. But the results are great. Shibari truly is an art.

I like my typing somebody up to be quick and love to use silk, because i really love the feel of it, When somebody would give me the possibility to have access to an umlimited amount of silk, that would resemble heaven.

I learned all by myself or by looking at other designs or people doing it.

He was a boy scout so came by his love of rope early. I don't think he's read books on the subject but he does look at bondage porn and can see how those ties are done. I've sent him some youtube things I've seen.

Since we are not into s & m, just true bondage freaks here, chafing ruins it. It's sexual for us and since I don't find much pain exciting making it hurt would be like cooking a meal when you're hungry and not eating it. Simply not satisfying.

I don't do rope, because I'm knot dysfunctional--though a sweet submissive once bought Me a book of nautical knots--I'm a chain chick---can have them hot or cold, love the thought, the sound and the click of the locks--for Me I also find them safer.

I'll bite, Cat. How do you get chains hot? Anytime he's used one on me I start shivering. I know they're room temp but they feel colder.

I learned bondage at a seminar conducted by Lorelei of Bedroom Bondage. She's definately one of the best.

I learned some basics from workshops, websites, etc, and then just kind of go crazy with it from that point.

I was a boy scout. Learned all sorts of skills that have come in handy in unexpected ways later in life.
I did rock climbing and got to like the feel of nylon kernmantel rope (sheath and core, usually 9 or 11mm diameter - thin enough to knot easily, thick enough not to cut in and be easy to untie).
The important thing is to be able to tie knot that won't slip or tighten when you don't want them to. If you aren't sure on that get help. If you don't have anyone local in the D/s world to ask, go sailing.

I actually learned the basics of rope work as a Boy Scout... though I don't think this was quite what they had in mind.

Since then its been a process of trial an error combined with whatever literature I came across and found helpful.

Another boy scout checking in. Lashings and sailing are great for learning how to work with rope. Two knotty boys is great too for the more complicated stuff, otherwise it wasn't hard to go from tying sticks together to tying limbs.
