OK ladies... does anyone have any insight here? My favorite collar on Carol (that damned $16.95 collar from petco) is just plain leather dog collar. But it appears that if you wear a leather collar with any regularity while going through hot flashes (which I personally think ought to be called sweat flashes), then it doesn't take long at all before it gets stinky.

Who's got a clue on what to do?

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Leather Collars & Hot Flashes.. Oh my! (6/11/2009 1:57:09 PM)

i had a friend who bought a side by side fridge/freezer so she could literally get her entire body in there during hot flashes.

i can hardly wait!

[:'(]

how does leather do in very cold temps? lol

I love petco collars. They are so much more comfortable than any of the fetish collars I've ever worn. No idea about the sweating though. ...Maybe try powdering the inside with either arm & hammer or some kind of talcum powder?

The best i can offer is:  mine doesn't lock, so every so often i take mine off, wipe my neck down with a damp cloth, dry & powder the collar and my neck and put the collar back on.  So far, it's worked and only time i don't wear mine is in the shower.  Damn the hot flashes!!  i know what You mean.

I have no clue. Because of  hot flashs I cannot keep jewelry on because it is an irritant and i break out also with a rash. Am happy these are not things I need to deal with in my life. Powder and corn starch do not offer much relief either. I used to have to take my wedding band off because of this. Thank goodness he didnt mind me not wearing it.

Daddy and i are dealing with the collar hot flash issue too. i love to chat so if Carol ever wants to shoot the breeze i'll be glad to pass my email a long![:)]

Wearing any kind of clothing is gonna get stinky if you wear it all the time, especially leather since it doesn't breathe.

I can wear my loose thin metal bracelet 24/7 though and have never had a single problem.

Maybe think of switching to a metal necklace, bracelet, anklet or ring?

DesFIP -> RE: Leather Collars & Hot Flashes.. Oh my! (6/11/2009 4:29:15 PM)

Buy two more exactly the same and switch every few hours so they can dry out.
Or get a nylon one, or a metal.

kallisto -> RE: Leather Collars & Hot Flashes.. Oh my! (6/11/2009 6:05:15 PM)

I'm with Des on this. Buy 2 or 3 and swap them out.   Allow her to take her collar off when the hot flashes hit.  I know they are unpredictable, but once she feels one coming on, take the collar off.   Let it pass and her cool down before putting it back on.

I definitely don't know anything about what I'm going to ask here ... but aren't there oils or lotions that can be put on leather to keep it soft and pliable?    I know when my ums were playing baseball they always "broke" their new gloves in by putting something on them to make them softer.   Would that work on a collar?  Maybe keep the sweat from "settling" in the collar?   I don't know, just thinking out loud [:)]

I'll pass that along and thank you. But truly, Carol could care less about collarme, the lifestyle, or BDSM as a whole *laughs*. She just likes making me happy. I think she'd rather spend her time doing woodworking than talking about pretty much anything on the internet. I actually find that pretty funny because at the beginning I was worried that she was "just being a slave to please me". As I finally got a clue though, I realized that it'd be hard to name a more slave-like reason than "to please".

Sometimes it's amazing how stupid I can be given my theoretically brilliant IQ.

To those who suggested powder and the occasional rinse, I'll give that a go.

To those that suggested metal, I have a nice metal collar I put on her and it looks great. She's also made a metal collar that looks great (there's pretty much nothing she can't make/build/construct/fix). But I'm emotionally attached to that stupid dog collar *laughs*. It was the first collar she had... purchased by herself in person at the store (mortifying to her) and presented to me on her knees. I'm sentimental about it now which means we're probably going to be using dog collars for the rest of our days. I KNEW that was going to happen. So much for getting her a nice tiffany's collar or somesuch. *laughs*

Des, I like that idea of getting a duplicate and swapping them out. That could work out really well.

And Kallisto, I'll look into leather care products. I know there was stuff for wetsuits that cleans out all the bacteria. Maybe there's something similar for leather? I'll look into that. Gosh, you'd think with all the leather fetish folks on this site though, someone would know. Where's a good kinkster when I need one *laughs*.

windchymes -> RE: Leather Collars & Hot Flashes.. Oh my! (6/11/2009 6:31:03 PM)

I think the most practical thing would be for you to buy a collection of those cotton bandannas they sell for pets to wear.  They'd absorb the sweat, can be thrown into the washer and dryer and come out smelling fresh as a daisy!  And, they're available in a whole rainbow of colors, so you can stock up and when she has a hot flash, just change into a fresh one when it's over! Hmmmm...i think you may have misunderstood me, i wasn't offering idle internet chat.  i'm sure she does enjoy pleasing you, i have no reason to doubt that. i hope you both are well.

Missokyst -> RE: Leather Collars & Hot Flashes.. Oh my! (6/11/2009 7:29:39 PM)

K.. this may be kind of silly but, you have been married, she has always been in the mindset to please you and you accept this.  So.. why do you need a collar?  She knows she is yours, you know she is yours.  Wet sweaty leather cannot be a pleasant thing.  Not to mention the rising desperation to be cooled off when a hot flash hits you.
I only had a couple of weeks of them to recall how ICK it made me feel.

Saddle soap works on  leather.

Murphy's Oil Soap. The paste, not the liquid.

Because I'm He Who Must Be Obeyed?? *laughs* Sorry, I couldn't resist.

You're absolutely right of course. And in truth, I'm pretty sure (but I'll verify when she wakes up) that she knows she can take it off if she wants. I think the real answer to your question is that symbols of our relationship are very important to us. We're the same couple that got married 12 years ago and never took off our wedding rings ... not even for 1 second (not counting when I had surgery and there was no choice so we put it on a necklace around my neck). And that cursed dog collar has way more emotional significance to me than any of the others, being the first and all.

Missokyst -> RE: Leather Collars & Hot Flashes.. Oh my! (6/12/2009 7:29:43 AM)

I find that very romantic, not the collar but the committment.  Having only been married once in my life and long ago deciding I would not remarry unless only one of us would come out alive, marriage is the absolute for me.  Men have come and gone, I have bedded some for decades, loved another for a decade.. but marriage is a for keeps thing to me.  LOL it's why I remain single now.
I know why people appreciate symbols, flags, insignia's, club pins, ect., are what join groups together in a common mentality.
For me it has been enough to commit in my head.  Although upon further reflection it may be that committing in my head is far worse.  When I divorced (got married at 16, way too young), I flushed my ring down the porcelain bowl, wrapped in a wad of tissue.. covered with how I felt about my soon to be ex husband.  Love or committment was not something I gave to him.
But others in my life since, I am still committed in my head to be there no matter what and for any reason, because it is the committment I gave to me, to be theirs for life.  It is an internal move which is not dependent on someone else or upon a symbol.  I wish I had developed more respect for symbols.

*smiles* Thank you Missokyst.

As a humorous aside, neither Carol or I are very good with dates. Amazingly, not even our own birthdays or our anniversary. So periodically, we both look at each other and say, "Now which day was it in March that we got married?" and neither one knows. The answer is inscribed within our rings so it's readily to hand, but since neither one of us would even consider removing the ring even just to peek at the inscription, we end up scouring the house for the "wedding box" to find the announcements *laughs*.

I have a vast collection of saddle soaps and conditioning oils for my horses tack. Definitely scrub it well with a saddle soap. Let it dry and put it in a shallow pan and pour the leather conditioning over it, submerging it. Let it soak for a day or so then take it out and lay it on some paper towels to drain. Use a soft cloth to massage the rest off.

leadership527 -> RE: Leather Collars & Hot Flashes.. Oh my! (6/12/2009 11:39:03 AM)

Wow! Thank you LaTigresse!

Coupled with the folks who suggested "get a spare or 2 and rotate" this sounds perfect. Now, should I be a sadist and make Carol go to the store and buy them in person? *laughs*

(backstory)
When she first proposed submitting, I didn't believe she was serious. Carol is a pretty shy woman. So I said, "Tell you what. You go buy a collar, in person, somewhere and bring it to me and I'll put it on."

On her birthday, she stopped by the petco on the way home from work to get herself the collar as a present to herself (and me). She is immediately faced with the problem, "What sized dog am I anyway?" *laughs* That leads to some covert glancing up and down aisles to see if anyone's looking and desparately holding up collars to her neck trying to figure out whether she was a labrador or a poodle *laughs*. I'm absolutely sure the security guys watching the cameras got a good chuckle.

Of course, she had some retribution. There we are later that night at an upscale restaurant. It's after the meal and she'd already opened the present I gave her. Then she says, "Oh hey, there's another present!"

"Huh?"

When the collar came out of the little gift bag you could've knocked me over with a feather. Much stunned silence coupled with guppy mouth motions on my part. *laughs*
