OrionTheWolf -> Are the People of the West concerned about N. Korea? (6/13/2009 5:00:43 PM)

Here and on other political/current events forums that I moderate or a member of, I see little discussion about N. Korea in comparisson to Pelosi/Right Wing Nuts/Rah rah rah BS. How many are actually concerned about this, and where is it in your priority list of concerns?

"Reporting from Beijing -- North Korea, calling itself a "proud nuclear power," vowed today to forge ahead with its nuclear program in defiance of the latest United Nations sanctions resolution. "

Well i can't really claim to be concerned about all the shit coming down in the world lately, i do however believe N.Korea should be watched like a hawk.

TheHeretic -> RE: Are the People of the West concerned about N. Korea? (6/13/2009 6:17:21 PM)

Wouldn't it be nice if we could just ignore them until they went away?  Since we can't, I'm hoping for a coup, revolution, or a much more rational 3rd generation who cares that his people are starving and cold.

Having a nuke and being able to deliver it where one wants to deliver it is a horse of a different color.Everything we know about that dysfunctional regime tells us they couldn't find their own ass in an emergency....so no they are not exactly keeping me up at night.Jong can't last much longer and I really don't beleive the Generals will actually accept son number three as the new glorious leader.
They bear watching...I don't beleive they should make anyone lose any sleep.Just my opinion.

Hi Orion,

North Korea always has been the top threat, and military options are poor.

Live well,

Tim

It baffles me how a country that can not feed its people are even get electricity to most of its citizens can be viewed as a "top threat".Without active Chinese assistance they are nothing more than a paper tiger that would blithely feed their many uniformed soldiers to the meat grinder that is advanced American technology.....North Korea backed by China would be a threat...the new realities of the Chinese N.Korean relationship makes such cooperation unlikely.China has been slowly distancing themselves from Jong for years.

Musicmystery -> RE: Are the People of the West concerned about N. Korea? (6/13/2009 9:32:31 PM)

North Korea has a very powerful military. Attacks on S. Korea and Japan are very real threats.

Check around. It's hardly a new or controversial view.

Do tell? You have been there and seen their facilities? So could you post some links to this information that you have read that makes you believe they are not much of a threat. I can FLOOD an entire post with reviews from REAL analyst that state otherwise. You are talking out of your ass.

"Siegfried Hecker, a former director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory who has toured North Korea's nuclear facilities, wrote in a recent article for Foreign Policy magazine's website that North Korea is "on a well-planned trajectory to enhance its nuclear and missile capabilities."

This quote is from the very short article that the link I provided, that you obviously did not read. So would you prefer the analyst be American (Democrat or Republican), Russian, Japanese or Chinese? I can link to several of them, and if you would bother to research something before making such a ridiculous comment, it may actually show that you care about knowledge rather than posting for just entertainment.

I suppose the great minds that are advising the members of the security council, just made recommendations of interdiction for no reason? I suppose there really is no reason for Russia, China or Japan to be nervous. Please do share with us this knowledge that so many intelligence agencies, and think tanks do not have. I really would like to not worry about this. Hey I know, you should send your resume to President Obama, he really could use a supra-genius like yourself that is able to see things the rest of the world cannot.

Medium range means how many miles? So where within that range could they launch that would cause massive causalities, and world wide problems? Hell with the right technology, and considering the security of the area, they could just ship it to where they want it to go.

You've got it. Why ? Because it is time even if we have to go through a few foriegn embassies...to inform N. Korea that from here on out we make it very difficult on them and even once there, there is simply no way they will use one. Waist your resources...you'll never launch one.

Imagine of you will, how could N. Korea possibly launch a nuke that could easily fuck up and land almost anywhere in a nearby country and even if accurate...without it being national suicide ? How could Iran do the same ? It may be time to send that message...any nukes means nuclear war over the middle east or Korea.

The lone wolf must become the enemy of the world.

North Korea's military is very formidable especially their ability to deliver both conventional and chemical weapon artillery. With Soeul being just over the DMZ that effectively means their first strike would likely decimate the capital of one of our staunchest allies. We must tread carefully in dealing with them.

Louve00 -> RE: Are the People of the West concerned about N. Korea? (6/14/2009 5:05:40 AM)

Well, I don't think we can ignore them and for all the other stuff going on in the world, Korea has the ability to make us focus squarely and immediately on them.  I just read this link.  Kinda scary.

Orion I never said they were no threat...but thank you for making my point for me....they have no sponsor anymore...neither China nor Russia has any interest in seeing this regime gain full nuke capability....The OP question was how worried should the west be concerning North Korea....I stick to the opinion that while they are troublesome...I won't be losing any sllep over this dysfunctional society. They are effectively isolated and will remain so as long as Jong and/or his nutty son are running things....again just my opinion, nothing more.
I think I will skip the resume suggestion ,though I appreciate your looking out for my carreer path.....

LadyEllen -> RE: Are the People of the West concerned about N. Korea? (6/14/2009 8:47:34 AM)

aside from the possibility of a suicide cult at the top in some sort of end of the world mindset that might encourage use of a nuclear weapon (and subsequent retaliation), North Korea does not concern me at all.

yes, they have an impressive looking military. however it is all very well having millions of diligently revolutionary troops well trained in killing and laying down their lives for a personality cult and indeed having hundreds or thousands of tanks and other pieces of equipment - the real question is how much ammunition do they have, how much fuel, how much food to sustain a conventional war?

now they could no doubt acquire such supplies readily should they invade the south, unless a scorched earth policy were effected and assuming they have enough of such supplies to be able to gain ground sufficiently efficiently to acquire them in the first place. even so, assuming they invade the south - its a peninsular, theyre not going any further, and with the whole world being tied into the South Korean economy (not just the neighbours), they would have to then either face the world and repel it or make a hasty retreat or go to the end of their world scenario.

and all this assuming that most of their army did not immediately take advantage of the opportunity to flee the regime, by surrendering en masse.

Truthiness -> RE: Are the People of the West concerned about N. Korea? (6/14/2009 9:04:51 AM)

Upside is, is that South Korea is probably well enough equipped on their own to handle North Korea.

South Korea has one of the largest standing militaries in the world (with a reported strength of almost 3.7 million in 2008).

Their army consists of over 11k artillery systems, 7k missile defence systems, 2800 tanks, and is the 6th largest army in the world.

They have fewer aircraft than North Korea, but the majority of NK's aircraft are obsolete, whereas South Korea's air force is very modernized and far technologically advanced to North Korea's.

North Korea would have a hell of a time trying to invade South Korea.

Yes and no, Truthi.  The amount of damage they could do in a short time is the big concern, both physical and economic.

slvemike4u -> RE: Are the People of the West concerned about N. Korea? (6/14/2009 9:58:45 AM)

Short term they would roll over the south...decimating the American "trip wire " presence while doing so.Long term they could never maintain or hold their short term gains.Having millions under arms does not equate to quality nor effectiveness of their armed forces. They would be quickly isolated and destroyed ,there is no hiding their technological deficiencies and any war would expose this.
And just to put a fine point on this that is exactly what the American presence there is ...a trip wire...No Administration could fail to respond with preponderance force to the losses we would take in the first days of any conflict....The other thing to consider is the DMZ is the one reason America will never sign any land mine treaty...the DMZ is well seeded with anti personnel mines...not that Jong would give a shit...but perhaps his Generals might. How many deaths will his cult of personality survive

Musicmystery -> RE: Are the People of the West concerned about N. Korea? (6/14/2009 10:11:15 AM)

mike, by your explanations, Iran, Syria, and many other countries just would be a threat either.

Maybe we should focus our attention on defenses against China and India?

And hell, Osama bin Laden is puny. What's a few thousand people in the grand scheme of things?

[8|]

Oh....never mind.....China and India are too intermingled with the U.S. economy. And Russia has its own problems...

Cool! We have no threats!

So this is what peace looks like....

More seriously--every empire, including ones much larger and around much longer thatn the U.S., has fallen for some version of the same reason: overconfidence and overreaching. It will happen to the U.S., too, sooner or later.

When we look back at history, sometimes we can shake our heads in amazement, wondering how they couldn't see it coming. Points of view like the one you're outlining help explain the process.

Our military is also stretched pretty thin right now, and will continue to be for quite a while--the rest of the world knows this too.

Music, they're not that "powerful", there's just a lot of them. But, nothing that a few dozen jets couldn't take care of with a day's dropping of "cluster bombs".
They'd decimate them. Or chemical or biological weapons, poof, no more "army."
In a massed charge it might take oh,...48-72 hours to slaughter them all, provided our leaders in D.C. don't start "feeling sorry" for them like Colin Powell did the Iraqis.
Funny all that "marching" stuff on t.v. Just like Iraq did a few years back. Evidently noone's told them that you don't "march" on the battlefield.
My only real "concern" is that the people in Washington will get the wool pulled over their eyes again by this simple money scam.
That's why N.K. is "sabre rattling" after all.
Thanks a lot Bill Clinton!
We should just walk away and let China deal with those bastards! I just don't understand why my govt should react everytime some foreign country sneezes. And, they need to *stop* cutting checks to foreign countries!
