I have always loved that expression, there is freedom in slavery.
It just speaks to my heart on many levels.

Masters, has it been your experience that there is freedom in slavery?
Slaves, do you feel freedom in being a slave?

Freedom has many forms and one form of freedom is to be able to achieve your goals and become who/what you want and need. By achieving this goal you have obtained freedom.

I am not sure what freedom really means actually.  Whatever one calls it, how can we do better than feeling good about who we are and enjoying life?  Slave, master, or whatever we may be...

littlewonder -> RE: Masters, is there freedom in submission/slavery? (6/14/2009 9:29:44 AM)

I don't see it as freedom. I just see it as just being who I am with Master. I feel freedom just being human and living in a country where I can be who I am.

There are days when my slavery to Master is anything but freeing!

I believe that there is freedom in -anything- that allows us to express ourselves honestly. For those who desire, beyond all else, to be of service to another and to yield themselves completely to another's direction, I would say that it is incredibly freeing to be able to be exactly who one is, without apology and without feeling like one's nature is a 'burden' to another -- particularly if careful exploration is made to assure that the one to whom one yields oneself follows the boundaries that will allow one to relax and know that the person doing the directing will be able to do so in a way compatible with one's inner nature.

I'm reminded of a quote perhaps by George Orwell's " Nineteen Eighty-Four"  or  "Animal Farm" been way too long since I read either but the quote is something like: "Freedom is slavery and slavery is freedom" A slave is free to think and pursue their daily lot without the worry of providing food, clothing and shelter which in turns makes those who claim to be free slaves to the system.. Perhaps someone who is more familiar with Orwell may be able to correct this..

Freedom to explore your inclinations, desires, personality, - maybe some relaxation of one's inhibitions occasionally, etc., in a supportive environment. Sure.
As long as it's freely chosen.

In my opinion, when the limitations imposed on us by outside sources (the law, our parents, our faith, our dominant, etc.) align well with what we personally believe the limitations ought to be, then we think of ourselves as "free". But make no mistake about it -- there are always limitations on our actions. It works for Carol both that I provide some of those limitations and specifically the nature and type of limitations I provide. So yes, she is free. However, like all choices in life, her decision to be mine curtails some other choices for her and opens up others. But that is the nature of any choice.

Which really gets down to the idea that a "consensual slave" is a neat phrase that supports our kinky fantasy but it does not describe reality.

i believe freedom comes from security. If you have security you can be free in any relationship, whatever side of the kneel you happen to be on.

DavanKael -> RE: Masters, is there freedom in submission/slavery? (6/14/2009 11:22:47 AM)

I'm a relationship sort of a person.  I have always  found my relationships with others to be touch-points and very important foundational things to my sense of place in the Universe, of course, the more important people having the more weight related to importance to me.  In that sense, I feel a particularly important sense of security and, yes, freedom in my interrelations with others when those interrelations meet needs and arewell-bonded.
As a counterpoint, whenever I heard "Me and Bobby McGee" (Janis Joplin) in years past, I always thought, 'Drunken ramblings'.  Well, I heard the song a few months ago and when she sang, "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose" that hit home pretty damn decisively bein' single and such.
So, I'd say, there are differing perceptions of what freedom is and I know which kind(s) feel(s) 'right' to me.

simple answer...

Yes

Needysubgrl -> RE: Masters, is there freedom in submission/slavery? (6/14/2009 12:19:40 PM)

Yes, of course there is.  I have never felt more free than when I was serving in a Master/slave relationship.  It is the most beautiful, most natural thing in the world.  Serving can set you free, in the right environment.

janiebelle -> RE: Masters, is there freedom in submission/slavery? (6/14/2009 1:46:31 PM)

No.  Absolute freedom is a state of anarchy, where there are no rules, and no man can count on his fellow man for anything, let alone safety.
Yes.  The freedom of a slave is derived from the structure and security provided by her master.  In her chains, she is free to pursue her fulfillment as her nature has hardwired her to do.

There is a sense of freedom in not having to hide.

Freedom for me is my mind. If my mind is free, then I am free. If i believe my mind is not free, then I hold the key to unlock myself from my own prison and release me.

i believe slavery is a vehicle towards the relinquishment of impediments to ones true nature. it is not the only avenue nor does one need to be enslaved to reach this point. for some a guide of sorts is both wanted or a necessity. others are able to achieve the state through their own efforts independent of guided assistance.

in response to your question, no i don't find slavery freeing. my commitment to self actualization is what frees me. slavery is merely the mechanism i employ in addition to my own efforts to arrive at this juncture. whether i elect to yield or not, sacrificing attachments and adopting disciplines that remove the barriers that hide my truest self are the things that make me free. the closer i move in this direction the more i bring to slavery.

I personally do feel that there is freedom in being a slave. For myself I can honestly say that if I wasn't born a slave I've been one in my heart and mind since I can remember. I like knowing that I can come here, or come home to Master and just be me, I don't have to tell people what to do ect. I get to be myself, completly, I get to be the slave I am and know that people aren't going to say I'm being manipulated or that I'm in a terrible relationship because I've given my "freedom" to someone else.
