Okay, so for those of You that read the i hate it when thread.... The new book i got and began reading Yesterday is actually the one that challenged me in keeping my appointment tomorrow. Tomorrow i'm supposed to see a surgeon about having the lap band procedure done. i have some concerns about this before i ever read the book. But, one of my current bigger concerns is that i'm not sure this will bring me the peace and satisfaction that i desired it to...The truth is, that while on some level i do know that being thin will not bring me the instant happiness that i desire it to.....Until i began reading this book i really thought (for some stupid reason) that i would somehow be all okay after this procedure...  i have some concerns about doing this, including (but not limited to) putting some foreign things into my body.......
i'm just looking for opinions and mostly bored out of my freaking skull.......
It's either do this kind of crap or read more of this book.
Kali

Sorry, Kallista.

I don't know how much weight you expect to lose.  I don't know how much it will cost.  I don't know how important your body image is to you, or if the weight is causing health issues.

Discuss it with your Master.  That's just ONE of the many uses men serve around the house.

I think I know exactly what you're going through, Kali.  I've actually thought about this procedure myself lately.  I took a medication more than 15 years ago that the Dr said "might cause a little weight gain".  I gained 100 lbs in 10 weeks.  I've never been able to get back to my thin self.  The most I've ever lost was 60 lbs & I put that back on.  I try to eat healthy & watch my portions, but I still stay this big.

My reasons for not having the procedure done, at least at this time:

The potential side effects post-surgery, not only the normal surgical risks, but the digestive stuff that one has to deal with.

The recovery time.

The fact that I have known people who have had this procdure who gained the weight back.  One even had to have it redone because she expanded her stomach so much that the band broke.

I am loved at this weight.

My reasons for having it done:

I'm getting older & the aches & pains from all this weight are getting worse.

The potential for other ailments is higher when one is morbidly obese, although at this time I don't have any of those other problems.  My blood pressure, cholesterol & sugar are still low, probably because those diseases tend to be more hereditary than environmental.

I'd like to be able to walk to the dumpster without His Evilness asking why I'm breathing like that.

Maybe I would quit falling.

I am loved & I'm ok for the most part with my body image.  But I do miss the thin Lin!!!  One day I showed him a pic of me in my 20's & he was shocked.  I weighed about 150 lbs less than I do now.

i really couldn't pick any of the poll sections..... If you need to lose weight, and can't or won't do it on your own AND you are satisfied that its safe(within reason) Do it.... you WILL feel better with the pounds off your body.

i know of one person who had the procedure done who so far hasn't put weight back on, at least a little.  she's happy with her decision.  i know of another person who decided not to go through with it because she had concerns like yours.  in light of your recent health problems, would losing weight help with the problem?  would you be at less risk of a stroke or heart attack?  those problems have to be considered as well as the weight issue, what you  do to one area of your body affects the rest of it as well.  good luck with the decision and i hope whatever you decide works out well for you.  huggs!

i can totally understand where you are coming from. i had thought about the surgery at one point Do any of the hospitals near you offer the Medi-Fast program? Thats a medically supervised liquid fast diet. i know several poeple that did that and lost the weight and kept it off. IF you are having doubts bout surgery i would defiitly look into other options.

I thought of it, but am not really elegible (have kept 50lbs off and am just barely at the limit for current weight), and I've heard too many problems from it.  There's a yahoo group that has the bad stories (we tend to hear from the folks who are doing well.)

I also travel a lot and don't want to risk problems while I'm on the road, and then there's the expense (insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgeries).

This is an intensely personal decision, and it's good that you are questioning how this would affect your life.

Ugh Kali. I've been pondering the poll options and I have no idea what to say! For as long as I have known you, I knew you had health and body issues you're struggling with. I know very little about the type of surgery you're considering. Al I can say is I wish you all the best in any choice you make, you have a better concept of knowing what is best for you and as a friend, I stand behind you.

Kali,.

I don't think the issue should be about your weight as far as appearance goes.
You are loved for who you are and how you are.

However, it was your regular physician that gave you the referral.
It sounded like there may be some medical reasons for her recommendation.
So, my thinking is it is a decision that is best made after you have all the information.

The way I see it: if you keep the appointment tomorrow, you don't need to make a decision to have surgery.
You  can simply decide to go for the information.

I understand your reluctance to have an invasive procedure that introduces something foreign into your body.

If you have the information and perhaps discuss it with your regular physician, you will be able to weigh the risks and benefits.

Tomorrow i'm supposed to see a surgeon about having the lap band procedure done.

People here in The Netherlands have died from that procedure. It turned out that the same surgeon already had a number of such deaths on his conscience in Germany before he moved his practice to The Netherlands.

I dunno how to get rid of the weight. I am somewhat overweight myself, but cannot get rid of it myself. I was thinking to ride my bicycle tomorrow.

Perhaps you and your master can lead a more active life? Throw a ball towards each other in the mornig and evening for ten minutes to half an hour? Take a stroll about town? Eat no more than two slices of bread in the morning and afternoon with some meat?

I think that you should go to the appointment tomarrow.  Before you go, make a list of your questions and concerns and TALK to them about it.  Make the list and take it with you so that you do not forget any of them why you are there.  You still have time to think about the surgery.  They are not going to do it tomarrow, so. . .no. . . the decision to have it does not need to be made by tomarrow, only the decision to GO TO YOUR APPOINTMENT.

If you can, take your Mr. Man with you or a friend.  Even if they just wait outside for you, you will have extra support.

I do think that the lap band surgery is a good idea for you.  Will it magically make you feel better about your body?  Probably not.  Will it ease your mind some?  Possibly.  Will it improve your over-all health?  Almost a definate.

Remember!  You are worth this.  You are worth the love you recieve.  You are a person of worth.

It's never too late while you're breathing.

*it's generally a day surgery procedure

*i don't believe any one has died because of it (it's not like the stomach stapling)

*it's no more or less effective than any other dieting method, it's just more physically invasive then some

*research your surgeon on the net or ask for references from your surgeon

*research as much as you can on the net, there's a LOT of information out there

*find a nurse who's had it done and ask her opinion

*being thin isn't what will make you attractive as a person. if you're a horrible person overweight, you're a horrible person skinny. if you're beautiful overweight, you're possibly a more confident beauty, thin.

*talk it over with the important people in your life. if they're not going to support you buy adjusting some of their (possible) bad habits, it will make it just as difficult as if you were starting a restricting diet.

Kali,

Not being a fan of the I Hate It thread I can't confess to knowing the reasons behind the procedure.
All I'll say is that if it's for a medical reason then by all means keep the appointment and get the facts that you need to make an informed decision.
If it's simply a vanity issue then I can't honestly see the point.  By eating less food, less sugar and less fat, and exercising more you can achieve the same results and you'd be more likely to keep the weight off because you'll then have a sense of achievement not to mention the I Love It thread being inundated with people congratulating you for doing it yourself.

There are many reasons for gaining weight, but not so many for losing it.
If you really want to lose weight then pop over and look after Little Og for a while.  My mother lost over two stone by watching junior.

If you get really desperate then try a vial of entamoeba histolytica.  They'll do the trick.

I guess you have to question your reasons for considering the procedure but at the end of the day you know deep down you're going to be loved here just for being you.

This one hits very close to home for me.

I came so very close to getting gastric bypass done last year.  I had the choice of that or the lapband, but there were a few things about the lb I didn't like.  One was having something foreign in my body, another was that you don't really lose very fast for such a drastic measure, and like anything else...if you ever want it out, you have to get it cut out.

I researched both a great deal and in the end I didn't end up getting either.  It was a huge decision, but I just wasn't quite ready to give up on doing it another way.

I am now at the point where I know something must be done.  I have exhausted everything I can, and am now on to my final step before giving into surgery.  My cardiologist referred me over for the Optifast program at my local hospital.  It's actually something a lot of people looking into surgery do in order to lose weight and shrink the liver.  It's a long program starting with a 12 week supplement only boost, after that I believe it's 8 weeks of adding food in, then a the rest of it they help you with what you need to eat and how to avoid temptations.  There are meetings every week, plus a dr see's you on a regular basis, and bloodwork so they keep an eye on everything.  It not only gives you the tools to learn how to eat again, but it helps you get there.  It might be something to check into as many insurance programs cover it.

As for being happy, I know that losing weight won't give me that.  It will give me my health back, energy back, and with that I am sure there will be some happiness.  I have learned that from every diet I have ever been on.  If you aren't happy, nothing is going to get you totally there, there will always be something else, then something else..etc, and you will never find it.

I am having to work through all of that myself and it's a very long process.  My faith is helping me, praying, talking, reading my Bible..etc.

There is no magic happy pill, or happy surgery.  They can only give you the parts of the package, the rest of it has to be done inside yourself.  It's not going to happen overnight and it will probably take work, but you can find that happiness you are looking for.

Personally I am an emotional eater, I eat when I am sad, mad, happy, lonely, or frustrated.  This program is showing me there are other ways to deal with things and I have to face them or I will never be content.

If you ever want to talk, feel free to cmail me on the other side.  I really do know what you are going through, I struggle everyday to find that bit of happiness, and to be safe in myself during the process.

I vote "no", not because I think it's a horrible thing, but because you need to do it for the right reasons or it won't work.  If you go into it thinking it will give you something more than a smaller stomach to fill, then IMHO, I don't think it's time for that big of step.

Best wishes for you.

Kali,

I have nothing better to add that Aylee hasn't already said.  I think this could be the first next right step in your future.

I agree with Aylee and Red. I think you should go with someone and take a list of questions and go from there.

Well, i have been following the I Hate It thread and i understand that you do have some serious health reasons for losing weight.  The lap band and other forms of surgical interventions serve a purpose in weight loss for improving your health and combating health issues.

i'm with Aylee and Red and girly....Make a list of questions and go to the appointment.  There will stil be some time to decide to have the surgery, if this is your first visit to the surgeon.

   YOU ARE LOVED!

Is this a private dr meeting, or one of the bigger consultations.  I like those better because sometimes people think of things to ask I wouldn't have.

I learned a lot at mine, the only thing I didn't like was they didn't always give you the correct statistics and things.  I have heard the LB is safer than the GB one, but then I have seen horror stories about that also.  I guess it all depends on how much at the end of your rope you are at.

I also have read about your health problems, so what I am on might not even be an option for you.

My bestest advice is, check into everything, no decision HAS to be made tonight.  There is no quick fix, there is work in everything.  You can change your mind till they wheel you off to the operating room.

Though it is a cliche'....  we are loved by someone, even when we don't always love ourselves.  Keep your chin up.
